Joe Wieskamp Going Through NBA Draft Process

I can understand, but I don't like the trend. I think it takes away from the team concept of college basketball programs.
It’s the way of the sports world now, though. The only way to stop it would be for the NBA to require that players be 22 years old and that ain’t happenin’. Nor should it.

Good for Joe - I thought he probably would. I don't imagine Iowa fans all making fun of Joe for doing this like Cook and Moss. Which is odd, none of them are/were ready for the NBA. I kind of expected Luka to do it too TBH

i'm sure this is to get a true evaluation of what he needs to work on and at what level his skills are at now. JW is already an excellent shooter and i think can become a real dominant rebounder, particularly on the offensive end. needs to improve his handles and quickness. in my opinion, there isn't anything JW has to work on that isn't just a part of normal or typical growth. he's got all the talent you need. just need to perfect it.

What they should do is stop calling it the “NBA draft process” when we’re talking about kids who are obviously coming back.

There’d be a whole lot less media hype with this shit if they just set up an “NBA evaluation” week where anyone could come to get looked at and get feedback. Because that’s all it is.

I’m calling it right now that Wieskamp will play three more years here. Not because he’s a bad basketball player, but because I don’t think he’s at the level of a leave-early talent.

Relax everyone, it was the WNBA...he just wants to build his confidence this summer by dominating in the women's ranks. He's going to clean up and may even meet his future wife. It's all good for Joe.

I know this because his "agent" is that chick from Millionaire Matchmaker.

Please do not turn this into another thread criticizing Tyler Cook.

Thanks.

Because I stated Wieskamp has more NBA skills than doesn't mean I'm criticizing Cook, just that Wieskamp has a bit better NBA skills, in my opinion. Cook does has some good NBA skills as well, e.g. his power and athletic ability.

I just don't think there's necessarily any kind of bias if a person doesn't come down as hard on JW as they did TC for testing the NBA waters. That was my point in the response to the poster who implied that there is.

Cook has some NBA skills including the hardest one to obtain, athleticism. The biggest thing was "He ain't ready for the NBA, he aint gonna get drafted, let's make jokes" ....same with Moss, who has a TON of attributes that translate to the NBA. All 3 of those guys weren't/aren't going to get drafted at the time they did it. Those 2 faced ridicule, I can only speculate that Joe won't. Not saying it's right or wrong or whatever, just definitely something I immediately thought of and apparently so did Dean.

It's probably because of white privilege.

There are plenty of threads on these boards pointing out what TC can't do. I don't want another thread dominated by it.

I'm not sure why any Iowa fan would come down hard on a Hawkeye taking advantage of resources available to him. There's not need to justify it in either case.

It's a chance to get feedback and a no risk/no lose situation for the player.

I still think the NBA at some point may change their rules to limit as many players taking advantage of the opportunity but until that changes, there's no reason for Joe not to take advantage of the opportunity and same was for Moss/Tyler last year.

yep

Gets him on their radar as well - if he leaves Iowa early because he's good enough to be a 1st rounder in the next 2 years, that probably means Iowa had a great season. We can't expect Fran to raise the bar in recruiting and then not expect our best players to flirt with the NBA. This is all around good news for the program IMO

I agree and always thought the same thing. Players leaving early can be looked at as a good sign because as you point out, either the team is doing very well and/or it shows recruiting is very healthy for the program.

What this does is get him name out there in the moment.

I don't disagree.

Weren't Cook and Moss the first iowa players to go though the process? I'm not surprised one bit that the first players got it the worst from fans who didn't understand the new process. I also won't be surprised if Joe doesn't get it as bad now that fans do understand it more. That's all it is.

This. The NBA evaluation process is a thing now (and it's a great thing). I hope the internet figures it out soon. So many click-baity twitter people doing what they do with misleading headlines...

No.

Peter Jok did it.

I'm sure its good for the players, but it isn't as much fun when a player hired an agent and you knew he was through with college basketball. All the players hiring and agent and going through the process could be back next year.
