Joe Wieskamp Comparison?

Hopefully he can be Grayson Allen without the kicking.

Similar style, similar build, similar skin pigment. ;)

That's a really bad comparison. Allen is way more athletic. I think for a current player Huerter is the best comparison.

McDermott. I think DM might have a couple inches on Joe, but both have good feel and handles. Both are underrated athletes. Joe will get better as a shooter. I don’t expect a J Bo level 3 point shooting Freshman year but he will contribute in a lot of ways.

Recker is a good comparison, but there are a few key differences. Recker was very stout by time he made it to Iowa. Joe has a few years until he reaches that body girth if ever. Recker was probably a better 3 point specialist, but Joe is better off of the dribble in my opinion. I'm just not sure we have ever had a combo guard quite like Joe before.

Did Recker have long arms? I don't really remember. I saw a stat where he was in the top 5 or so for D1 rebounders. That was one thing that surprised me was how relentless he was on the glass. I think the kid really really wants to win at all costs. That's another thing this team needs right now. Guys who really want to win.

Trying to think of a player who fights to get into the lane like he does, the only guy I can think of is Woolridge. That guy wasn't the quickest point guard ever, but he was really good at fighting his way into the lane. That's what I saw out of Wieskamp. The difference is Woolridge did it one on one against college players and Wieskamp did it against triple teams in high school.

Watched a few of JW's courtside films. I love the way he attacks the basket. Hopefully it can translate to the college level...the hawks are in desperate need of someone who can do that.

We haven't had a guard in a long time that could put up 29 points by attacking the basket against the defense he saw against West. Maybe Jok could do it by jacking contested 3s and catching fire. But no player, even as a senior in college, could cut through triple teams like he did. That's not to say he's the best all around player than any guard we've had. He's just really good at attacking the basket.if he had an average shooting night, he would have scored 40 and they may have won.

Luke had been to 2 schools and was like 40 before he got to Iowa, it might take Joe a while to get there

Recker's freshman year at Indiana he averaged 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.5 steals per game. I think I'd consider that a successful freshman year for JW. That's sorta similar to what Garza put up this year.

I'd take a Doug McDermott clone any day... He was closer to 6'7 then the 6'9 I'd seen him listed at a few times. So if Joe can be that type of a crafty scorer that'd be awesome. Doug was just such a volume guy that he could score from anywhere. On the post, from the wing off the dribble, catch and shoot, It drew a ton of fouls and shot a ton of free throws. It'll be interesting if he'll be more of a 2 or 3 at Iowa. Putting JBo, Moss and JW on the floor at the same time should help us on O. I just hope Cook comes back to fill out the front court.

Who would you compare Wieskamp's game to? Would Adam Haluska be a good comparison?

Adam Haluska was an amazing athlete... he is in the all time record books right beside Tim Dwight for the 100 and 200. A lot of people don't realize that.

so no joe is no where near the athletic caliber of Haluska.

But that's okay because not many ever will be.

Jess Settles if he is able to put on mass... but smaller

Joe was the starting QB in football until he stopped going out, I believe in his sophomore year. (His older brother Matt plays WR at Western Illinois and was a QB in HS). He was a pitcher on the baseball team until he stopped going out. Dude is a pretty amazing athlete.
