Jarrod Uthoff

Oglesby and Jok combine for 36 mins at #2, Gesell and AC for 35 mins at point, So if marble played 5 at point and 4 at #2, that left him with 20 mins at the small forward...

Wow. That makes absolutely no sense. It just didn't register in my brain that Marble was at the 3.

"... and Oglseby were on the floor together for several minutes..."

If this is true, it is even more disturbing as neither of these 2 profile out as a #3 player and is certainly a contributing factor in Iowa losing the rebounding battle and in tying in the FT comparator.

But this is a classic example of Fran's substitution strategy, playing both in game at same time.

And it makes even less sense to have Jok and Josh in there, together....

...

and why I really dislike the players being blamed, that is just so unfair.

I deleted the game as soon as it was done. This would be "interesting" in a morbid sense to look at these sub patterns.

If all this is true and Fran is trying something because nothing else is working then "yikes".

Iowa outrebounded Illinois 5-3 in the 4 and a half minutes Josh and Peter were on the floor together in the first half.

Iowa was +12 with Jok in the game yesterday!

I love Uthoff and White, but they are really limited when forced to play on the wing.

Yep and Illinois, like most B10 teams, play a three guard line up which forces Iowa to go to zone since Uthoff and White struggle to guard perimeter players and our zone has been very shaky lately.

I watched 1st half,

Iowa down 21-18, uthoff plays last 8 min, and exits Iowa leading.
1st defensive possession, Iowa goes to 3/4 pressure, white and uthoff trap guy, who passes it back, resulting in TO. Not steal, but team TO. His man shoots 2x and misses (not fouling), and gives up an unlucky o board where the shooter misses everything resulting in air bank that caught all 4 Iowa guys flat footed. Bad luck. The offensive rebounds were limited to when his guy shot, and the Il, center tapped it up like Moses Malone vs Woody. Other than that, there was 1 shot and out for those 8 mins. Uthoff drove and drew contact from 2 guys on drive, and 2 guys on rebound, and still managed to take it away and get pass off, could've been fouls on 3 different guys. Then, Fran benches him bc of a missed shot in last min. What does that teach a kid to do?

Jok had 2 very nice interior passes, and 2 passes to 3 pt shooters and gets an A. Also, gave up back door layup, TO at half court then foul, and fouled a guy in transition resulting in 2 FTs, = 4 bad plays.
So what his passing gave, his defense more than took away.

Sorry, I still think games are won with defense, rebounding and Jok still doesn't show me anything there. He has some nice passing and court vision, but if he's a fish on defense, then he will end up hurting more than helping.

And neither had a rebound....

Plus, this is such a small sample size that it is impossible to draw valid conclusions....

Not buying what your selling Mike. He played just 7 minutes and Iowa played well during his time on the court. Uthoff brings a dynamic few players can bring off our bench. I guy that can shoot and create off the dribble.

So four and a half minutes is too shall of a sample size to draw valid conclusions from but you can draw all kinds of conclusions from Uthoff's seven minutes? LOL

Pretty damn simple Mike. Fran needs to mix Uthoff-Ogs and Gabe in with the starters creating a 8 man rotation and sticking with it. Tired of seeing Fran go to the bench only to have lineups on the court that we've never seen before. Especially in game 31, there is absolutely no need for that.

Here is an example of a Fran Rotation..

Starters:
Gessell
Marble
White
Woody
Basabe

First rotation
Gessell
Marble
McCabe
Gabe
White

Second rotation
Marble
McCabe
Gabe
Uthoff
Ogs

by 12 minute mark this is rotation. Like Fran needs to cycle through every player.. Why???
Clemmons
McCabe
Gabe
Uthoff
Ogs

Those 18 games were not compiled against 300+ Cupcakes. Iowa only played 2 teams in the non-conference that fit that billing.. Don't get carried away Mike. Iowa played 7 teams in the Top 50 in that 18 game stretch, the exact same amount Iowa played in the 13 game stretch.
Prdator40 is saying use more of the non-con schedule to measure Uthoff's effectiveness (and dismiss more B1G results), while HawkeyeMike is saying use the stretch of the B1G schedule to measure Uthoff's effectiveness (and dismiss more non-con results).

Maybe there's a difference in effectiveness because of different styles of play non-con to B1G? Maybe Fran is playing Uthoff according to Uthoff's success to the different styles of play? Maybe Uthoff needs to develop his game to accommodate both styles of play?

Maybe Fran is preparing the team for the tournament season by getting as much playing time and experience for as many players as possible to develop Iowa's one great strength in the tournament: depth?

Uthoff has got some big time work to do in the weight room this offseason (take white with you). And a big dose of mental toughness as well. Maybe a new team makeup next year, with new guys in the mix, will be a good thing.

And Woody....
