Jarrod Uthoff

I think he plays less when he contributes less. Uthoff has looked less sure of himself lately. Let's remember this is his 1st season as a major college player. He seems to have worn down a bit. I think he can come back even stronger next year (and maybe next week :)).

Fran plays bench players (especially the younger ones) by how they seem to be playing during that game (and probably in practice). That's why we saw more of Jok yesterday and it seems like Clemmons gets a shot once in a while (and gets yanked when he makes a mistake sometimes). It can be a little maddening, but I think Fran is searching (especially in this losing streak) for anyone to contribute once they are on the floor.

Yep and with Uthoff you can usually tell right away if he's going to be aggressive or not, he was against Indiana and played 20 mins. Other than that, he's looked extremely passive in most games lately.

Iowa was beaten in 2nd half by 8, playing one of their worst halves of year. Uthoff DNP.

Uthoff's 1st half included o-rebounds, assists, blocks, NO TO, fouls, and did not make mistakes on defense that led to lay ups and points like backdoors, full court run outs for layups, turning ball over in front court for lay up, or getting a blocking call resulting in 3 pt play. Little things like that add to rebound margin, lower FG%, and forcing oppents to foul and getting to the line are unappreciated.

The bigger question is What is his role on this team? It is hard to discern from our vantage point, but I wonder if Uthoff even knows what it is. Take a 18 ft shot and miss it and you get benched for the rest of the game, is what I saw last night. And it hurt Iowa in the 2nd half.

I really think the future of the team rests on 3 players and of those 3 players 2 of them should have played a lot this yr. Gesell, Uthoff, jok. Jok is the only one who should have been limited as we had better options at his position.

Jok will probably get a lot of Uthoff's minutes in the BTT (and in The Dance). Jok looks more confident with the ball, can move it better.

Uthoff has an edge on defense, but I think Jok could help in the tourney drive with his ball handling, passing, and shooting.

Maybe he was sick.

I agree to an extent. Jok played well last night and then Fran short hooked him in the 2nd half. At the present time, Jok is a better option than others that are getting minutes. At this point, those that aren't producing at a certain standard on offense or defense should be on the bench. Jok gave great minutes last night. Uthoff should play more. He is a nightmare matchup for other teams, but Fran doesn't utilize him that way. This is a horrible ending to a great 3/4 start to the season.

So small sample sizes in shooting are well known and discounted for what they are, good info, but pretty much useless unless you look at ones total body of work.

I'm officially on the play Jok more minutes at the 3 bandwagon and let Uthoff and White split time at the 4 spot.

It's over a third of the season. Much more useful than incorporating his stats accumulated against 300+ RPI cupcakes in the non-conference.

LOL by assists, offensive rebounds and blocks, you mean he had one of each. He did a whole lot of nothing during his time on the floor. His best play was a fluke pass after falling down in the lane.

Those 18 games were not compiled against 300+ Cupcakes. Iowa only played 2 teams in the non-conference that fit that billing.. Don't get carried away Mike. Iowa played 7 teams in the Top 50 in that 18 game stretch, the exact same amount Iowa played in the 13 game stretch.

Since you obviously don't think Jarrod should be playing, who are your players you want coming off the bench?? I will hang up and listen.

There might be some basis of this since the Hawks are 9-5 in B1G when Jarrod gets double-digit minutes.

But.....

his point and rebound totals don't fluctuate significantly when playing double-digit minutes (4-7 points with of high of 11 pts. vs. Nebby and 3-4 rebs with a high of 7 @PSU).

he just doesn't pass the eye test in the B1G this season: he gets pushed around too easily and has been bumped to the floor and handful of times under the basket the last few games.

I like the guy and his game because I think he does have game when he's aggressive, but he is deferring to Marble and White in his shooting. The Hawks don't need a skinnier version of White not taking shots and some of his outside shots are not in the flow of the offense.

I'm not disagreeing with you DD and that is why I put this out there. I think the facts and stats show Uthoff's value. Some disagree and that fine but then that begs the question who do they want besides Uthoff?

In the end this is IMO where Fran is going wrong. This Iowa team is begging for an identity that Fran just isn't giving them. This Iowa team needs structure that comes with a solid 8 player rotation rotating in and out during a game. Uthoff is one of them following by Gabe and Ogs..

From the outside that question could be asked about a few of the guys. There seems to be no sub pattern or sub roles. Of course, we're not inside the locker room so the pattern could be, whoever has the hot hand will play more.

So for guys that are not as aggressive or don't know their role, the scenario you described could lead to more confusion and doubt.

"...LOL by assists, offensive rebounds and blocks, you mean he had one of each. He did a whole lot of nothing during his time on the floor. His best play was a fluke pass after falling down in the lane..."

Also what he did not give up; backdoors, uncontested full court lay ups, blocking foul and ones, TO resulting in run outs, or fouls/min giving IL opportunity to get to FT line. When he was out, Il charges to lead, when he was in Iowa comes back, when he sat Iowa loses the 2nd half. I did see uthoff drive the lane, draw tons of contact, not get the foul call, then hustle to the floor, and still make a smrt play for a layup. Watch it again, I did, he could have drawn the foul and that is exactly what you want to do, drive hard and aggressively to the rim, draw foul, get to the line, then make a play. I like that play.

A few more 'fluke' plays like that from uthoff and iowa wins this game.... But wait, he sat the 2nd half...

So why in the 30th game of the yr, does Fran move Marble to the 3 hole? Effectively benching Basabe and uthoff for Jok, and mcacbe and Oglesby? Iowa give us 13 offensive rebounds to the 224th ranked teM in us in rebounding? You can't win if you give up o-boards to guard oriented teams.

I thought Jok was in the game because Marble was on the bench with his 2nd foul? Did they play that many mins together?
