Jack Nunge

I'm being serious here. When Lickliter coached I never saw either a dunk or a team press from Iowa in 3 years. Just a bunch of pasty white kids running up and down the court, and not very fast at that.

Cripes I can't believe I watched every game too. The game threads were interesting for all three to seven posters who were commenting on the game. :(

I will never forget the year they let him go. With two games left to play in the season Barta came out and said Lickliter has his full support. I never wanted to kill an AD so much in my life.

Oh man, the dude already looks like a Hawkeye. I really am excited about this Freshman class. If this group is as special as last year's class boy oh boy is this going to get fun.

I like Nunge and Garza and I think our bigger guys are going to be really good but our lack foot speed in the back court is going to be our Achilles heel for awhile I'm afraid.

I'm not worried bout that at all. Good ball movement, good shooters and working without the ball can all negate individual speed. Plus I think Moss, Dailey and Williams all have plenty of speed to penetrate. Connor also has an explosive first step that I have posted on before. I think we will be better than fine.

I may be wrong about this, but I get the feeling that he was talking about our defense and you appear to be talking about our offense.

That maybe the case, but the 5 slowest guys in the NCAA could still manage to have the best team defense. I don't buy speed being any correlation to good or bad defense. I haven't ever and never will. Defense is about hardwork and communication. Speed, agility, strength they are all just bonuses on defense. They are not a requirement.

TCU's back up point guard disagrees with you.

I understand what you're saying here. It really comes down to one player. To the extent that JB can stay in front of penetrators, this team is going to be hard to stop. With a year to prepare, help D will get better. Williams will be used more effectively and join Moss as a backcourt stopper. JB will get stronger and anticipate better.

Ummmmmmm??? Speechless.

I was mostly talking about defense. Effort on D is important but it's a lot easier to play lock down defense with quick feet than relatively slow ones.

Adam, seriously. Connor is not slow in his first step. Explosive....NO. Quick...no. A gamer? Yes.

Williams, is faster, but not especially quick. His reluctance to go left and put it up with left is noticeable and not typical for a Big Guard and maybe explains a few things. He does have faster than normal lateral movement, but nothing unusual.

Moss is athletic and has some great moves at speed and can quickly turn the burners on when he's already at speed. He is not explosive from a standing start. http://www.blackheartgoldpants.com/...151367/isaiah-moss-iowa-basketball-recruiting

What Fran has put together is a team than can attack when pushing the ball. A quick overview of these guys might sort of explain the difficulty Iowa has in the half court. Might also explain difficult defending the half court as well. Williams (who I think should play more) struggles with defensive position.

Somewhere though Fran needs more explosiveness in his recruits.

Easier? Yes. Requirement? Nope. Simple to suffice that the more athletic one is the easier any action should be. However great defense is more than an individual's ability. It is not an excuse to use speed as a crutch for defensive limitations. Being a freshman is though. I expect each of the youngsters to play much better defensively next year. Nothing else will be acceptable.

My statement was not an opinion. it is an accepted industry fact. Here is a link to support my statement. You will notice #2 - 7 in the defensive rankings are teams that certainly don't have top end talent. They don't have super fast elite players. How can you explain their defensive success?

Granted, OSU has a lot of issues right now. However, note the difference between Iowa recruits highlighted and Lyle. The Iowa guys are seen moving into a light defense. Lyle is leaving guys behind and creating. Fran has what he needs to make the next step. This is what he's missing to make the big step.

You can post videos on Connor all day long. Even in that video he displayed an explosive first step twice. There is a reason he is a top 150 recruit. Connor has been guarded by smaller quicker players his whole HS career. Yet he demonstrates the ability to get his outside leg inside the defenders stance effectively cutting the defender off from stopping his path to the basket. This is the very definition of explosive first step. It's ok if you disagree, but for 6'5 the kid has a great first step. That isn't even my opinion only.

but he's a white kid from Iowa so he has to lack lateral quickness and don't forget, Fran can't recruit quick guards scenario either. These narratives don't care about actual tape or fact.

We disagree. It is not explosive. You can say that all day long. He is also guarded by Iowa high school players. Makes a big difference. Iowa large schools would struggle in Indiana or Illinois small school tourneys. That is based on lack of diversity and mostly....lack of games. Schools in surrounding states play 2x the games in a year than Iowa High Schools. AAU isn't the same. It's showcase and about individuals, not team work.
