IT'S THE TALENT STUPID!!!

looks like the old WINS VS LOSSES pokes up it ugly head, the team wins he's a great QB, the team loses and he is the Worst QB on the planet,
how bad is the thought process of this Coaching staff, just think back to the spring
trying to move Hyde to safety, now that was a stupid idea, and that is on the coaches, to take probably the teams best CB abd try to turn him into a safety
ooohh wait it had to be Hyde decision to change position as the coaches don't make these calls
how many other calls are made, we all know KF doesn't like to play Freshmen when he has Seniors, his playing a Freshmen is to let him get a few worthless minute to burn the redshirt then never play him again

There is a talent gap, I agree.

I would expect we finish recruiting this year much like we do the majority of the years......in the Top 40, maybe. We continue to be bottom-fishers......go where others don't, go near the geography of programs on the decline, look and best project at different positions some of the leftovers, etc.

Do we even have anything that resembles a pipeline anymore? We used to have some success during the Fry years in Texas, NJ, and later in FL with Bielema's efforts. Does anyone on this staff have some good connections outside of Iowa have that produced regularly?

With 10 or so recruits having given verbals at this juncture it sure seem the recruiting results are slowly plodding along even with the obvious opportunities on the defensive side of the ball. You can usually count on a few that will commit after a big recruiting weekend but even that has produced little or no verbals to date. The more I see new "MAC talent" names pop up on our prospect list between now and Feb the more I will conclude that we are being left at the curbside by the more talented players.

Don't think the job gets any easier if we lose the final two.

Good evaluation. And can we please stop hearing that we lost all those guys to the NFL as an excuse. That team only went 7-5.

So you take a bunch of NFL players off a 7-5 team and what do you get? The 2011 Hawkeyes. It shouldnt be as shocking as some people on here make it out to be.

Vandy certainly has all of the physical tools, and he can be great AT TIMES. He can also be Christian-esque at times, and he also just doesn't appear to be a good game manager.

He has now started 12 games for us, so there is enough there to make a judgement.

I think that is the biggest indictment of all for this coaching staff. They were literally oozing NFL players and did squat with them. I read somewhere that every single senior on defense ended up in an NFL camp. Yet, they lost to Minnesota and NW?

Last season was botched by KF's blunders against Wisconsin. Had we won that game, I really believe the season would have ended differently. Even against MSU last year, it was unforced errors that killed them, they were moving the ball at will against us.

I don't get people saying we are down this year because all of the players we lost to the nfl. The only player we lost to the nfl is Sash. We lost the rest to graduation. The fact that a lot of the players went to the nfl after they graduated has nothing to do with their backups not being very good.

Your assessment of the team is bad enough, but the bolded part shows you weren't even watching that game were you? While we only got one sack, we got consistent pressure on Cousins all game and I would say forced him to thrown those picks. They hardly moved the ball at will.

Their drives:
3 plays-punt
6 plays-interception
12 plays-interception
8 plays-punt
4 plays-downs (half)
3 plays-interception
3 plays-punt
3 plays -punt
9 plays-TD
5 plays-punt
7 plays-downs
3 plays-punt

A third of their drives ended in 3 and outs and half of them overall ended in punts. If they were able to move at will, why so many punts?

Every week watching the Hawks this year the talent (or lack there of) is becoming much more noticable to me. I believe that talent level on offense is ok, it's the lack of talent on defense that is crushing us. I just hope the team can hang on these last two weeks and get at least 1 more win.

I know it's not a fair comparison, but when Alabama has 2 linebackers that run 4.5 - 4.6 40's, and 1 is 6'4" 260 and the other is 6'2" 265 lbs, those guys are bigger than our d-lineman AND they can run faster than our LB's. Of course, this is why the SEC wins the NC every year, their fast guys are massive, whereas other schools the fast guys are small (see Oregon).

Everybody blames it on a lack of talent on defense and what no one seems to realize is that we had the lowest number if returning starters in the league. People act like losing three 3 year starters on the D line and two at safety shouldn't make a big impact.

I underestimated the losses prior to this year. I knew the defense wouldn't be great, but I figured they would develop on the D-line as the season went along. That development hasn't happened, the talent just isn't there, especially on the d-line.

When those losses are replaced by seniors, the expectation is that people with 3-4 prior years in the program are going to reload, not rebuild.

So it should be common to replace six big time players with three years experience apiece with 2 seniors, a junior and two sophmores (Daniels aside as he had significant experience) with little to no starting experience and not expect to see a drop-off at all? I'm not buying that.

Again with your "facts"! Can't you just let a man rant unburdened by the truth?

Post would not have been made if our miserable talent hadn't had 3 turnovers to 0 for MSU and thier vastly superior talent and (IMO) we would then have won.

We would not have called it good coaching because we wouldn't talk about the miserable talent. Or we would have won in spite of coaching.

Or we would be just talking about the possibility of winning our division.

The argument constructs are pretty transparent.

Thread winner. Fans are bipolar.

Actually, I would add Bauserman, Colter and Siemian ahead of JVB. Well, maybe not Bauserman or Colter (due to his style), but I would take Siemian ahead of JVB right now. Siemian has been money in the limited situations in which he has played. He had a Persa-esque drive against Iowa at the end of the game, had a great strike to Ebert against Army and he went 3-4 for 67 yards against Nebraska and would have been 4-4 if not for a blatant hold on the receiver that led to a pick. Pretty freaking sad that Northwestern's third string QB is better than Iowa's first string QB if you ask me.

And you are pretty clueless if you think that is anywhere close to being true.

Um, I'm no expert on football, pal, but last I saw Trevor Siemian is the front runner to start at quarterback for the Denver Broncos in the National Football League. Do you really want to argue that JVB is better than Trevor? Is JVB in the League?
