ISU vs. Drake

Iowa State has a lot of talent. We'lll see if Hoiberg can bring it all together. Some of those kids, although talented, haven't played in a long time. The team looked rusty and out of sync, but they were getting good shots. They must have missed 20 layins.

Iowa will not beat them in Hilton

Christopherson playing the point for ISU this season is akin to Hoffarber playing the point last year for the Gophers.

Solid comparison. I really like McGee and think he has the toughness to be a decent point. Or even Allen. He had 7 assists and no turnovers last night, to bad he shot the ball like me out there! :D

PG in college ball is key, without someone to get it to your big dogs, you can really struggle. If teams keep pressuring the point, ISU could really struggle.

Very solid point. I'm not overreacting yet but there are some serious things that need worked on. Iowa State doesn't have a point guard. Christopherson, god love him, isn't one and shouldn't be asked to play the position. Our defense was lazy last night. A good coach will fix that. Good test for a young coach in Fred Hoiberg

What the hell is Hoiberg and his staff thinking on defense? I really have never seen a team on any level just switch every single screen like that. Did you play that style last year? I can't imagine you did but I didn't really watch ISU close enough to remember.

You got me. I have no idea what they were thinking. It was a bad gameplan, that happens, but than ADJUST! Never happened and we kept switching. And if you are going to switch than jump out on the ball and make them step back. Our switching was soft and slow. Which makes me mad b/c our guards should be good defenders minus Scotty. Allen, Babb, McGee are all known for being pretty decent at defense. Just a lazy effort and poor in game coaching.

I'm hopeful it was a good wake up call. The team can go one of two ways from here.

Aside from one year when they made the tournament, I don't think it's a stretch at all to say that when they play Iowa or Iowa State at the Knapp Center it's their biggest game of the year. While they play UNI as well and UNI has been a better program then the two, I still think we at least bring the flair of having a big conference team in their building.

Way too many people here do the same thing. The people who know nothing about basketball are the same ones who think their teams are getting "screwed" by the refs.

I have little issue with people ripping on the refs. In basketball, it is so subjective that the refs really can control a game. Sure, in FB, you can get a momentum changing mis-call. But in basketball, they can set the tempo, the flow, the feel, everything.

So I have no problems with people ******** at the refs. There are reasons the casual fan knows names like Ed Hightower and Ted Valentine.

Hoiberg is a less experienced version of Steve Alford.

Have fun while he learns on the job for the next ten years.

This wouldn't be a bad scenario for ISU fans. Alford developed into a very solid coach by the time he left. He just could never overcome the Pierre Pierce incidents. If Fred turns out to be as good as Alford was, ISU will be in good shape.

Good looks like Steve-O and shoots free throws like him.

Comparison ends there. Hoiberg is a likable guy with no ego. Steve-O wasn't. After last nights loss Hoiberg manned up and took the blame. Steve would have called out Henderson or some other player he loved to call out. Hoiberg is smarter than Alford too.

With that said, he needs help on his staff. He has a staff of recruiters and no X's and O's guys. It's all on him and he probably isn't quite ready but we shall see. Still a lot better scenario than I thought we'd be in when Greg left.

It's only one loss, but I argued a few months back with some of are Cyclone friends, might have been Cyclone17, not sure, but I argued that I felt Iowa St. had one great player in White and the other transfers were nothing but role players. Babb and Allen were just that in the Big Ten. I also argued that without the presence of a true point guard that they would struggle. Kinda like Pierre Pierce trying to run the point his freshman year with Recker and Evans. It turned out a complete disaster. Not saying Iowa St.'s season with go that route, but for anyone thinking that team is going to even be on the bubble this year is setting themselves up for a huge disappointment.

As long as Fred can find his Craig Neil. With out Neil Alford was lost.

Also it wasn't just the PP thing that did Alford in it was lack of success more than anything.

Basketball is the most difficult game to officiate by far, but the refs make terrible calls on both teams. That is why coaches never blame a loss on the officials. Both teams have to deal with the disrupted flow and everything else. Both teams have to adjust. It is just a simple excuse for people to use when their team loses.

People who've watched Jim Bain disagree. :)
