Is Kirk right?

I think it’s hard to say that you are playing complimentary football when your offense basically gives you one play. There just is no room for error for the defense and we all see it. At this point the people on this board are so use to it, we can all see what Iowa wins look like, and what they don’t look like. The ‘23 team doesn’t look at all like they are capable of punching up in weight class, but they look plenty likely to beat teams equal or less than them. As long as the DL is not shoved off the line of scrimmage all game, they can win a lot of games this way.

The best part about an 11 win season would be watching the national media squirm about handing another national coach of the year award To Kirk.

I was as much into the game Saturday as I've been in a long time. It may not been an offensive explosion but how could anyone say that wasn't exciting? I think the fact that we came in as underdogs and played such a physical game on both sides of the ball made it all the more enjoyable. I didn't expect to win (my pregame prediction was 20-10 Badgers).

I hope we can get the passing game going, of course. It would really make this team tough to beat. Because the O-Line has improved a LOT. We could win out but it also wouldn't surprise me to see at least one stinker along the way.
I live in badger land and everyone around me knows I am a Hawk fan, so it is a big deal when Iowa wins. Frankly, I was afraid we would get blown out yesterday. I had a blast watching the Hawks, at least for the day, resurrect the “Bullies of the Big Ten.

Running the ball down Wisconsin's throat was fun to watch.

I pointed out in amother thread that running it down Wisconsin’s throat doesn't happen every day. And it's cost us a chance in many a loss to them.

You probably have to go back to Shonn Greene in 2008 to the last time e we ran that effectively on Bucky.

I will just continue to use the word "magician." No one. I mean no one. Can win the way that KF wins. Its like he bottled up football from the 1980s and sprayed it all over the Big Ten West.

He has an NFL philosophy in the college game. You just don't see that all that much now. Iowa runs an NFL style pretty much more than any other college program. Old school, run the ball, stop the run, play good defense and special teams. Come out with a W. He doesn't give a chit about having a QB pass over 300 yds or having two WR get 100 yrds +. It all about controlling the LOS and TOP and grind out points.

With tight ends hurt should we get cooper De Jean involved in the offense?
Where though? He's too small to play TE, we've got enough RB's in the stable, and we don't use our WR's. That leaves him as a lineman (who knows maybe an improvement) or a QB where I'd just assume I don't see him get hit.

The thing is I find myself getting into each game more and more as we progress. The simple fact that it's like a dream come true watching this team win week in and week out with absolutely zero passing game. And it pisses me off because I know in typical Iowa fashion that it's going to come crashing down on us at the most unexpected time and regardless of record someone like Wiscy is going to slip right past us into the driver seat.

I honestly want to be optimistic and enjoy the ride, but don't want to get my hopes up at the same time. I guess that's "football" and par for the course when your a life long Hawkeye fan.

I am excited to see where Iowa goes after KF and only time will tell how things pan out. I get the feeling iowa will go with a more offensive minded coach with their next hire mostly because of how bad the Offense has been down the stretch for KF....but will that yield better results? I am not convinced. If Iowa had more star power on offense I believe it would just be to the determent of another area of focus. I think our coach has squeezed as much juice as he can from this program towards the back half of his career. They identified a lot of what was ailing them and worked to capalize and get the most out of program that really shouldn't be winning at football as much as it has. I think he's stayed the course vs. caved to the pressure of what "outsiders want and think" should happen with the program. He's laid on the grenade, he's sacrificed his kids reputation, his own, but for the good of Iowa football. He's made the tough decisions that likely couldn't be made by just anyone when it comes to Iowa football. That's how I think he'll be remembered. The GOAT

It really is interesting what might happen. Fans think "Oh just shift gears and make changes", but it is not that easy. It's dangerous backing yourself into a situation where in Iowa ya have to recruit top WR positions to match what others are doing. Your in the midwest now relying on recruiting instead of development. People have to be careful what they wish for and realize the decisions can come with adverse results.

Iowa has had an identity all the years KF has been at teh helm which has played into the success. Many other teams have struggled to find its identity, see Nebraska. It will be interesting to see where Wisconsin is after about 3 more years with their "air raid" style. Will they be able to successfully recruit to that style? That is the question.

I hazily remember seeing a graphic you had to go back to Sedrick Shaw in '96 to see Wisconsin give up a day like that.
I just looked. Shaw went for 154 that day.

I am sensitive to the number 25 in football right now. If you look at the scoreboard for NFL games on Sunday there are a lot of very good offenses that are not hitting 25 points. Chiefs, Eagles, Bills, Cowboys. Regularly. About the only team that always beats that mark is Miami, but their D stinks. I guess my point is that you can win a lot of games if you have great D and special teams, and you don't even need to hit 20 points to do it.

The difference is that the Chiefs can score 30 if they need to because their D had an off game. Iowa has no such margin for error.

I actually don't think it's Wisconsin that I'm worried about slipping past. I mean, they obviously aren't that good. Minnesota actually has the best shot. Nebraska has a bit of a bigger row to hoe with the loss to MN. MN has to play at Iowa, but they host Wisconsin.

I have concern about Rutgers and their D for some reason. Minnesota always has a formidable running game it seems. Can be a concern.

I chuckle. Bills and Giants in a 14-9 game. Sound familiar anyone? When I heard that score, the first thing I thought of was the Iowa/Wisky game. As you point out, those kinds of games happen in the NFL all the time and fans don't squawk how crappy the offenses are. NFL fans just want wins.
Here are the NFL scores from last week. Yes, a lot in the 20's.

Yes.....very true.
But, NFL games with just 37 yards passing and eleventybillion punts are kinda rare.

Oh yea. You are correct. Also, many QB's in the NFL get 300 plus yards which used to be a rarity even as far back as 20 years ago. I guess that tells me they give up yards between the 20's quite a bit than gets tougher when closer to the goal line.

True. But there also no NFL teams these days that have as dominant a D and Specials as Iowa does in the West, such that you just don't need to do much offensively to win. The rules and the application of the rules at the NFL level do not allow a D to clamp down the way that Iowa does in the college game. 85 Bears, Dungy Tampa teams, Ravens with Lewis, Seattle Legion of Boom, etc.. Those types of "take over the game" Ds do not exist very often in the NFL these days. So, offenses have to do something to win, even if its only scoring 14 points.
