Is Iowa scrambling in the 2020 class?

With Fran’s style of casting a big net it just seems like recruiting is so helter skelter. At the end of the day it only matters how’s this class ends up, so we shall see.

Fran was so focused and driven early in his Iowa career to get Woodbury and Gesell I thought finally we have a coach who can target good players and land them. He has disabused me of that notion in the years since.

My hopes that Fran is a great recruiter have dropped considerably too. I still think he's an average one who is great at finding players and getting in on them early. He just can't seal the deal often enough.

This is a good analysis.

He did a good job identifying under the radar guys like White, Marble, Olaseni, and Jok and developing them.

I think he tried to parlay our three strait tournament trips into going after more 4* type recruits, and it really hasn’t worked out that well. He throws our name in the mix but rarely closes the deal.

It still appears we are going to be very reliant on in state recruiting as a program, so if he misses out on Carton and Foster in consecutive years, that is very very bad for both Fran and our program.

Only a handful of programs can realistically compete for a national title or final four, Iowa isn't one of them. Just the way it is.

Right now the goal is to get this program to a level where the make the tournament 4 out of every 5 years or so with the occasional sweet 16 run and maybe sniff a conference championship every once and awhile.

We aren’t there yet and recruiting needs to improve if we want to get there.

Iowa needs a player or two with NBA talent, that is difficult to find, without some back door bonuses...

Wisconsin has had tons of B-ball success recruiting their type of player and running a clean program. It can be done.
I don't think anything run by Barry Alvarez is "clean."

Agree, Wisconsin is what Iowa used to be, in terms of success.

I am talking about now...

I’ll summarize this conversation:

In a recruiting thread talking about Iowa recruiting

Rev: Only a few programs can compete for Final Fours. Iowa isn’t one of them.

21: yes we are talking about how we can improve recruiting to be more successful

Rev: you can’t land big time talent without paying players

21: Wisconsin has had tons of success with mostly non highly rated recruits

Rev: Wisconsin is what Iowa used to be I’m talking about the here and now.

-First of all that isn’t true in the slightest, UWs last 10 years far exceed any time in Iowa b-ball history. Secondly what are you hoping to add to this conversation? Do you not want Iowa to improve their recruiting?

I am hopeful Iowa will improve and land some top level talent under Fran.

It is possible that the new offers are for kids that blew up recently and Fran actually likes MORE than he ever liked the other guys. I'm not saying I think that's the case, just that it's possible.

i think you make a good point that we really don't know. i mean, there really are a lot of things that are up in the air. what if jbo does play in '19? what if JW leaves after '19? what if connor decides to play baseball after '19? the total scholarships available for '20 is kind of up in the air.

having said that, it does feel like we're scrambling a bit. maybe it's just a natural paranoia of being an iowa fan, but i really feel we could lose out on foster and that would be a turning point, imo. and not a good one.

Bo Ryan had lots of success. Gard hasn't shown the same ability. Wisconsin also has more consistent in state high school talent than we see in the state of Iowa. Bo also developed talent well. Wisconsin also plays a boring as crap basketball style.

I've said this a few times on this board, Fran isn't great at developing talent. KF has had solid consistent success by developing talent consistently. Fran has done that with a few players and had some very good in state talent at times as well. But the consistently of developing mildly recruited players just hasn't been there. Add that to the fact that Fran isn't a stellar in game coach. The results of that combination have been meh at best.

If Iowa does land Foster, then Fran gets another 2 or 3 years for sure. Otherwise I think Fran will be on the hot seat. But Barta probably doesn't have the guts to fire Fran.

All that being said, I do enjoy the style of basketball that Iowa plays. It's not boring but it can be frustrating to have the other team have their best offensive game of the year against Iowa every night.

"Disabused"?
