I also don't think he realizes that we wouldn't have even made the NIT without Matt Gatens last year. Our resume looks A LOT worse if Matt Gatens doesn't average 7 Made Three-Pointers and 31.5 points per game against Wisconsin and Indiana down the stretch.

Please knock off the Gaten's bashing, we are better this year because Fran played a lot of young kids last year and they have all gotten better with experience and good coaching. Gatens played on some of the worst Hawkeye teams in history and had a tremendous senior season. He is a stud in my book because of the way he carried himself, right now the biggest weakness is our 3-point shooting, if we shoot 40% or better from 3 point range we can beat anyone in the country. Go Hawks!

Remember those numbers are after playing big10 games versus this yr of only playing ooc. We were scoring at a much higher rate than 71.9 before conference games last yr.

Also you are looking at all of this from a point of view that is very flawed. Just getting someone to take over the points lost or other statistics doesn't account for everything. You could score just as much or more and be a worse team. Oklahoma city traded harden for a player that can score just as well as harden but most believe the team is worse and at best the same.

I look at it this way with mccabe in the lineup we typically scored just as many points as we have with clemmons (starting that is). But the offense runs smoother and our defense seems to be stronger. There are factors other than points that go into this. White now at the 4 puts him in a more beneficial position for himself and the team both offensively and defensively. It also puts our best on ball defender at pg and he also seems to push the tempo more and better than gesell. This also puts gesell in a position that he seems to be better defensively. Not to mention that it unclogs the lane for marble and gives woodbury more room to work because of spacing issues.

It isn't just about points and statistics. It is about how well the team is constructed as a unit. They have not been put in a position to see if anyone can step up in big games like gatens did last yr. You can bring up when marble scored a bunch of points but against our ooc that is a different theory than against indiana or michigan or osu or any other b1g team. I think marble can step into that role and will show that against indiana but until then we don't know.
 
After watching IU last nite, I am not encouraged for Iowa on Monday....just too much quality depth from IU....IU 89 Iowa 72.

IU still has to prove they can go on the road and win in conference play. There still are some defensive issues they are dealing with and that works to Iowa's favor. Iowa doesn't fear IU, especially at home. Keep in mind, they played Jacksonville, not Kentucky. IU is one of two elite teams in the BIG and with their added depth it could turn out as you predict, I just like Iowa's chances.

Who would you rather have shooting the 3 ball? Ogelsby or Gatens?

Gatens would put us over the top with his ability to shoot from distance and open it up on the inside for the post players.

Does ghost know about your love of Ogelsbrick? Prepare for a haunting from the dean

They looked very good against vastly inferior competition, but I had the same feelings about Monday. Of course, it was entirely classless for Crean to leave the starters in with three minutes to go with an almost forty point lead......

I still think we win on Monday......

Gatens started to improve his junior year with no help scoring from the outside. His senior year he had a run that will be remembered for ages......

Would I like to have his sharpshooting now, yes, but he is gone and Josh is his apparent heir who will overcome his reluctance to shoot, and taking better shots when he does. We are going to need his three this season in the Big Ten......

I have faith that Josh will correct his game soon, even though he is helping right now with his D, which is much better, and his ballhandling and passing. He has been instrumental in some games preconference, shooting three threes in the second half against Gardner-Webb, among others......
