Iowa State predictions

There are a lot of factors against Iowa winning in Ames this year. Iowa State returns most of their starters. Yes they lost Hakeem and Montgomery, but their offensive and defensive lines both return. They seem to have found a decent QB in Brock Purdy.
That being said, Iowa State as a team barely broke 100 yards rushing against the Hawkeyes last year. A lot of credit is being given to Iowa State's defensive line, however, they weren't able to stop Iowa's offensive line last year. And this year Iowa's offensive line looks to be better.

As for the rest of Iowa State's season, they have some tough away games. Oklahoma being one. West Virginia, Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech and Kansas. If Iowa State beats Iowa, Iowa State might more than 6 wins. But we've seen what happens with Iowa State before, they have a good year or two with a new coach and then back to the basement.

I think we beat them but I think they will get better as the season goes along and they figure out how best to replace Montgomery and Butler. Purdy wasn't nearly as good the last 4 or 5 games of the season once there was tape on him. I'm curious to see how he does without the best RB and WR in school history bailing him out.

This is spot on and what I have been telling everyone as well. The Clowns and Bugeaters are quite similar in that they both have mobile quarterbacks that had their best support tools around them graduate and that cannot be ignored.

Sooooooo, the more tape on Purdy the worse he gets and he'll be exposed as a fraud without his 2 weapons. But ISU will get better regardless.

Purdy is a very talented QB, but one thing people tend to overlook about good QB prospects is that raw talent doesn’t necessarily translate into wins. If Iowa state doesn’t replace butler and Montgomery, than its a moot point. Any good d-coordinator (including Phil) can scheme around a good QB making plays with his legs. A good defense (which I believe iowa has) can shut down one playmaker. A bad defense can’t. I look at how well rondale Moore performed against lower tier Big ten teams last year and it was crazy to watch. Even against Ohio state.

People are overlooking how strong of a defensive team ISU was last year, with a lot back. There were some key losses, as happens every year to every team.

Purdy is the real deal. I would take him in a heartbeat.

There won't be as much drop off from Montgomery or Butler as people think.

If we get this one on the road, it will take a huge effort. Campbell doesn't want to go 0-4 vs the Hawks--this game will be huge for them. If it is as huge for us, we can squeak one out. I see a close loss.

Also, I love eating crow if it means the result was good for the Hawks. :)

He isn’t even particularly talented, he’s an average college QB who benefited from coming in with no scouting for teams to rely on.

I

Don't get me wrong...we will run the ball, but I think we are going to be throwing on first down alot. ISU just absolutely loaded the box last year....

Yes, Iowa would lose to ISU by being too predictable on offense while ISU blitzed on defense because they knew that was the only way they could win (they couldnt play us straight up and win). Same thing here but I dont think the hawks have to throw it down the field as they can slip out the FB here and there for a catch and run, throw to a running back after a fake on first down, throw short to wide open TEnds. Then hit them deep. Get them thinking pass and then run draws and delays and screens, beat them good.

In close games special teams are a big factor, especially field goals. Since I do not know where ISU is at with personnel in that area I can't give a prediction for the Iowa game. Hopefully Iowa's punting is better this season.

These are ISU's most difficult games: Iowa, Oklahoma, Texas followed by OSU, Baylor, TCU and KSU. WV, KS and TT are in transition with new head coaches. I see four conference losses for ISU: OK, TX, OSU and Baylor.

It always seems like a Big12 game in Ames and a Big10 game in IC.
I think it will be pretty interesting to see how it plays out this year. Both defenses should be salty. ISU constantly gave us super short fields last year and only gave up 13 points.

It truly feels like the pressure is actually on them this year, and I cant say that's been the case in the past few years.

Hope we beat them! Hope they have good year after we beat them for our strength of schedule and then could care less about them from then on!

With Butler & Montgomery, I think isu would win. Being that they now don't, Hawks win a close one like 17-14. I don't think isu realizes how good and disruptive AJ Epenesa is and will do to them. He's a game changer and might be the best DE in the nation this year.

Purdy will rush about 10 times or so. Make him pay. Our new guys on the interior DL need to excel.

Purdy had some games where his completion % was not great and others where off the charts good. So either streaky or has a harder time against tougher defenses.

I was listening to a You tuber postulate that Iowa State would win 7-9 games this year. Sounds a bit high to me. Yes they return their entire offensive line, most of their defense but still 9 games?

My response was 5-6 games.

Bold = heck no. I think 7-9 with a possible 10 is quite right. Yea they lose a couple but they always seem to find that tall athletic WR and use them. They also usually seem to have a formidable RB. They also have arguably the top 1 or 2 defense in the BIG 12. I don't think 8-10 wins is out of the question at all.

This.

Players on college teams get replaced every year. Iowa State always seems to find a stud receiver and decent RB. One or two players should not make or break a team for a season. It is when a team takes a loss to a certain unit on the field that is detrimental.

Pretty much every metric and Vegas has ISU at 8 wins this year. That's the baseline for success this season.

Iowa also only had 105 yards rushing while averaging 2.9 YPC. I think that is a highly successful day for ISU's D line.

Last year ISU's new punter shanked it multiple times in the game giving Iowa very short fields, ISU's starting QB got hurt and they had to put a guy in that transferred, and they shuffled the O-Line before the game which I think was a huge mistake by Campbell. I think ISU should win this game, but it's two very evenly matched teams in what will likely be a low scoring game, so a big mistake here or there will likely swing it. And it's an early season game with college players so there will be mistakes.

Hopefully it's a good one because it should be.

Typical that you have plenty of excuses for the Iowa loss last year. The fact is Iowa left a lot more on the field than ISU did. Iowa should have won by much more as they dominated that game.

I will say that I like what Campbell has done copying Ferentz in building a program. Building that defense is gonna pay dividends again this year. I see 8 wins for ISU as the Big12 is as bad as I can ever remember. Sure OU and Texas will be tough, but the other 7 Big12 games shouldn’t be that tough. They go 0-2 vs OU and Texas, go 6-1 vs the rest of the Big12 and go 2-1 in non conference play.

I’m still leaning Iowa in the head to head game, and I will continue doing that til Campbell gets a win vs Kirk.

Gave me a good laugh. We’ll see where they land at the end of the season, but I strongly disagree. Iowa in the playoffs and losing to Bama by single digits is more likely than Iowa State making it to ten wins.
