Iowa State predictions

Gave me a good laugh. We’ll see where they land at the end of the season, but I strongly disagree. Iowa in the playoffs and losing to Bama by single digits is more likely than Iowa State making it to ten wins.

Ok. We will see. I'm saying 8 or 9 is in mix. 10 probably not that probable but could be the bar.

Bold = heck no. I think 7-9 with a possible 10 is quite right. Yea they lose a couple but they always seem to find that tall athletic WR and use them. They also usually seem to have a formidable RB. They also have arguably the top 1 or 2 defense in the BIG 12. I don't think 8-10 wins is out of the question at all.

Except last year when we shut it all down!!! Remember Kempt was the savior and beat Oklahoma at Oklahoma the prior year.

Pretty much every metric and Vegas has ISU at 8 wins this year. That's the baseline for success this season.

Iowa also only had 105 yards rushing while averaging 2.9 YPC. I think that is a highly successful day for ISU's D line.

Last year ISU's new punter shanked it multiple times in the game giving Iowa very short fields, ISU's starting QB got hurt and they had to put a guy in that transferred, and they shuffled the O-Line before the game which I think was a huge mistake by Campbell. I think ISU should win this game, but it's two very evenly matched teams in what will likely be a low scoring game, so a big mistake here or there will likely swing it. And it's an early season game with college players so there will be mistakes.

Hopefully it's a good one because it should be.

If you take out the QBs rushing Iowa State got 47 yards rushing for a 0.8 yards per attempt. That was with Montgomery. Who is was the best back on the field. (in fact one of the best in the country IMO) Iowa's 2 backs, Young and Sargent got 93 yards. Iowa beat ISU in almost every stat in what was a defensive struggle.

I think this year is Iowa State's best chance against Iowa. For one they seem to have found a good QB. 2 It's in Ames. 3. Most of the team is back. 68% of the starts returned.
On the Iowa side, we don't know how the offense is going to be with the losses from last year. The defensive line may not be as good as last year's but overall the defense should be fine.

I think if things go right they can win 7-8 games. They have some tough away games, West Virginia and Oklahoma being a couple.

It's probably my bias against Iowa State, but I think they were overlooked last year, some thought that the previous year of 8 wins was a fluke. Also there is more film out on Brock Purdy. Teams will scheme against him more this year.

In their last regular season game, they barely beat Drake. That was WITH Butler and Montgomery. That is not progress. Another group of Iowa seniors will walk away never having to lost to the clowns. In a side note, I think Kansas will take Iowa States position in the B12 within the next few years. They are hungry and now have Les Miles as coach. He will be to Kansas what Bill Snyder was to K-State.

Brock Purdy's last 5 games:

4 TDs, 5 INTs, 12 sacks

Keep in mind those stats include nearly losing to DRAKE.

Lets hold off a bit before just handing him the Heisman

Yeah, once it got a little chilly and they had tape on him, he didn't look as good.

This is a good and valid point. He is not an unkn now.

If 85 year old Mack brown got hired a UNC, sky is the limit for les if he can win 6-7 games at Kansas

Yep. If the guy manages 7 wins at KU within 2-3 years, he will be on the finalist list for programs like Michigan, OSU, USC, Auburn, Florida, etc. Not saying he'd get those, but KU is a rehab project and with a title, he is in rare company and can work back into the mix.

I don't think those are excuses but reasons. There are always reasons a team loses games. I don't think many teams are prepared to lose their senior starter at QB in the first series of the game. I don't think Iowa dominated or they would have won by more. I never said ISU should have won or anything, the outcome was what happened.

I think you're underestimating the Big 12 teams that I think will be better than a lot of people nationally do. TCU and Baylor specifically I think will be pretty good. 6-3 I think would be pretty good and I'd take it right now.

Kempt went out in the 3rd quarter. Think even past mid-point Q3.

There are many reasons teams lose games. The #1 reason is because the opposing team is a better team. That is what happened to ISU when they lost to Iowa, they played a better team, and lost.

Depends on the program. The #1 reason Iowa has lost games in my lifetime (with the exception of a few bad transitional years when Hayden was on his way out and Kirk came in) has been horrible officiating.

I never denied that. Iowa was better than ISU last year and they won. Tip of the cap. I don't know what you're arguing here, unless you're arguing that there is no such thing as an upset.

Interesting question. "Upsets" are usually defined by expert opinions and assumptions. I think, much like strength of schedule...you can't really say a game was an upset until you look back on the whole season and see if it really was an outlier. Sometimes what looks like an upset at the time, is really one team not as good as projected and the other one better. There are of course, exceptions...like Rutgers beating tOSU.

For ex: in 2002 many would have said Iowa winning at Penn St was a huge upset...by season end, not so much. Just a good road win. Conversely ISU @ Okie in 2017 did prove out to be a big upset... Outside of that game ISU was .500 in conference and Oklahoma was undefeated in conference. There are plenty of other examples, but I'm too lazy to dig em up.
