Iowa QB Quality

We've all heard KF state the QB race is wide open between 15 Rudock/19 Sokol/16 Beathard. I understand they all possess a little different of their own style of play.

Does anyone, having a chance to see these three live, know what level of quality has been thus far? Do we have: 3 decent, average, or below average QB's?

Rudock will get the initial nod for NIU just because he has been in the program longer (barring any injury during summer practices/workouts of course). He has more knowledge of the offense and has a nice throw. But, if he doesn't WOW anyone during that game, I wouldn't be surprised to see if Sokol gets the start for game 2. I think that is when we will see Sokol take the starting spot from Rudock. From watching what Sokol has done during the practices, I feel that he has more of a "scoring threat" upside with more ability to make defenses pay with his arm and feet. He just seems to have a better nose for the open spot in the field and beating the defender to it. However, the down side is he may make more mistakes for trying to do too much on any given play, which may result in turnovers. Of course, I've been known to be wrong from time to time.

I agree we'll all know the answer to this at the same time. I'm not going to be anticipating any 300 yard games or 4 td passes. If the running game is rolling that won't be close to necessary. If he can throw 1 or no picks have a completion percentage around 60% and maybe hit on one or two "explosive plays" then I'll be tickled. Coupled with a win of course.

Remember back when Stanzi got the starting job. I think it will be similar to that. Kf and Davis wont give to much responsibility to the new QB. I see a very predictable and vanilla offence.

No one has any idea. However, given the fact that Ferentz refused to play Rudock, even in games that were out of reach, doesn't inspire confidence.

Maybe I am reading into this statement a little too much but unless one pulls ahead of the other they both will play in the first game. I agree, in that instance that Rudock would start but Sokol would play as well. But based on how they both play in that game is who would start the 2nd game. Not how you described above. KF wouldn't bench Rudock for Sokol solely because he didn't "WOW" them. It will be based on ball control and making smart decisions, NOT the "WOW" factor.

Ruddock is supposed to have been all world in hs and suckol was supposed to have been very very good in the juco ranks. We shall see

In just observing the the qbs as far as arm strength, pocket presence, etc. They all 3 look pretty decent. Impossible to rate them much more than that until the bullets start flying. It was clear imo that Beathard had the strongest arm. However, he did seem like he was still thinking too much out there. Beathard could very well win the job next year if he doesn't this year. Sokol is the guy trying to make the big play and may try and fit the ball in spaces he probably shouldn't. Rudock comes off as the guy running the system and methodically moving the chains but will throw it deep when the opportunity is there. This is why I think Rudock wins the job. As much as people talk about Sokol's escapability, Rudock is also able to move around some.

A QB with a strong arm who thinks too much? I thought Vandy had no more eligibility ...

I think someone needs to start a thread on how to spell S-O-K-O-L. I guess you missed the whole thread on how to spell R-U-D-O-C-K. That was great.

I think Rudock gets the initial nod. But I absolutely think Sokol will get snaps as well to see what he does in live action. Good and bad about having a close race ... The good? Well, they have to keep up with each other and try to outwork each other to become the starter ... The bad: Is that nobody is separating themself from the rest. Playing a two qb system won't be the answer and we won't go that route. But, I bet we do get to see all three in the preseason ... Whoever starts at ISU will most likely be our slinger for the rest of the year ...

I think Rudock and SOkol will get snaps initially, not sure about Beathard. I think GD starts Sokol if it were up to him. A reporter asked GD pre-Spring game what's going to be the deciding factor, decision making or abilty to make plays with his feet. GD answered (paraphrasing), "Decision making is always a part of playing QB... also guys that can extend plays. I asked Coach Walsh 15 years ago what he looks for before drafting an NFL QB. He told me 50% of the plays in the NFL don't go as planned. So a guys ability to extend a play and makes things happen off schedule is huge."

Rudy, Skoal and B-Yard will battle it out and each on this forum will pick their favorite. You can bet the best one will be the one who's not getting to play. I'm looking forward to documenting which poster is in which camp.

In October the forum will be flooded with people complaining that they need to pick 1 and go with him - - or - - 1 guy started and kept the job and everyone is fuming because nobody else gets game reps (because they are close games).

If he is healthy Rudock is going to get the start against NIU. He will play until he either throws and int or fumbles then Sokol will play. Not sure if Beathard is really in the mix or not. I suppose if both Rudock and Sokol can't keep the ball and the TD to Int ratio favors ints then Beathard might see the field.

Sounds a lot like last year, and yes, there wasn't much "WOW" factor. Ball control can be taught for the most part. Decision making comes through experience.

On the other hand, talent for extending the play, finding secondary options downfield while avoiding the rush, and making plays off schedule are attributes that aren't coachable. If you don't possess those talents you're not going to find them.

I think if Beatherd had another year under him he'd be the starter. It says a lot that he is still in the mix as a RS FR

Here's the real question. If the backup QB is "the fan favorite that should be starting" what happens when there's 3 dogs in the hunt? I'm anxious to see how this plays out on the message boards.
