Iowa QB Quality

If you have three quarterbacks, you have no quarterback.

It's gonna be brutal. Absolutely brutal.

I would normally agree.....yet I would be willing to bet that the 3 headed monster this year is better than JV last year. Not because they are better necessarily individually, but the offense as a whole will be better. I really don't have any proof for this, yet from what I heard all last year (it was a WR problem). That I think it has been addressed (new WR coach, and a ton of new WR). Makes me think the things I heard were spot on, and things will improve this year.

this thread is just painful to read. it actually hurts my head

I agree whammer, and I'm probably one of the most stubborn posters on here.....at this point just let the whole Sokol thing die. If he starts he starts, if he doesn't, he doesn't. We will know in a few weeks.

The only thing that qualifies my statement is the fact that Kurt never let any of these guys see the field in an actual live action football game...because VandenBearKiller was so stellar. Or something.

Thunder, while I found it odd no back-up saw action, to what purpose? The PSU and Michigan games were really the only "out-of-reach" games. I don't personally think it would have done wonders for Rudock to see any snaps those games. Why kill the guy's confidence or risk injury for THOSE games. The only "win" we could call "out of reach" was Minnesota, and JVB "needed" that for "stat padding" (cough).

I honestly think they were struggling so much trying to figure out what the hell they could do offensively that would actually work that they never even considered changing the QB. If you think about it... what good would it really have done? If you have zero identity offensively and if whatever the gameplan was isn't working then what good is it gonna do putting in another QB? It probably would have looked even worse and in the end it could have killed their confidence.

As much as I stand by KF, I honestly think last year James was nothing more than a sacrificial lamb. He sacrificed his senior season so Kirk and GD could try to mesh their philosophies, and they wound up figuring out that it had failed miserably. Once they came to that conclusion it was too late. Sure they could have got someone else snaps, but like I said earlier, I don't think it would have accomplished anything positive. They needed to completely hit the reset button, and it's pretty tough to do that in the middle of a season.

It is what it is. I just feel bad for Vandy. The fact he never once complained about it publically tells you a lot about the kid.

Greg Davis says that ALL 3 QB's have the ability to make plays with their feet, and extend plays, and they all have zero experience.......

But I thought that only Sokol could extend plays with his feet (please imagine sarcastic font). This tells me exactly what I thought Sokol and beathard are more of gamblers with their throws. While rudock is more methodical and for lack of a better word conservative (he won't throw a ball into a bad situation and hope it works out). Personal preference is I like the style of rudock and I believe that Kirk will prefer it too. The question is what will Davis prefer and who will ultimately win the argument. We have seen in the jc and Stanzi situation that Kirk will allow the oc to go with the guy they prefer. Though I don't think GD has given any indication of which of the 3 that is at this point. So it is all conjecture.

It will be really interesting to see how this goes because I don't think there's a huge difference between any of the three athletically. You can tell by looking at the pictures from media day that Rudock is a little taller and has been working with Doyle a bit longer.

I think the biggest difference between them is their approach to moving the offense. Sounds like Rudock is more methodical and makes the best decisions while Beathard and Sokol are more keen to taking chances. I think the key to earning the starting spot will be decided by whomever can find the right balance between the two approaches.

Personally, I don't want to see Rudock play scared like Vandy did last year. He needs to trust the system and take some chances. They have the tools on offense to do it. To his credit, he should be more comfortable with the offense than James ever was, and the receivers should be as well.

On the other side of things, it can be a bit more exciting watching a QB who plays in the same mold as a Brett Favre or Drew Tate (gunslinger mentality). However, a young QB who's a bit careless in his decision making can turn a good football game into a blowout in a hurry. Now they can also make big plays in a hurry. It's just a matter of figuring out when it's appropriate to take those chances and when it isn't.

I have a feeling Kirk would prefer the more methodical approach, and Greg may want someone who's more willing to hit the gas pedal so to speak. Like I said initially, this will be an interesting battle. Kind of fun to pay attention to in order to help kill the next few weeks of agony waiting for the season to start.

Of course, it means they all have EXACTLY the same amount of talent in this area.

Did you hear GD say we MUST get the ball downfield more this year to keep the defense back? Seems like that doesn't favor a QB that specializes in check-downs. I saw Sokol throw it downfield several times in man to man coverage in the SPring game but didn't see that from Rudock. Not that Rudock can't improve or won't but right now I would say Sokol not Rudock is better at reading the defense and taking advantage of the defense.
