Brandon Hutton Granted Release to Transfer

Freshman forward redshirted this past season

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery announced Wednesday that freshman Brandon Hutton has decided to transfer and has been granted a release from his scholarship.

Hutton, a 6-foot-5, 212-pound forward from Chicago (De La Salle HS), redshirted this past season.

“Brandon is a terrific individual who remained positive and worked on his game all season long,â€￾ said McCaffery. “He is a versatile player, who is ultra-competitive, and we wish nothing but the best for Brandon moving forward. My staff and I will do whatever we can to help Brandon during this transition.â€￾

“I would like to thank coach McCaffery and staff for this past year,â€￾ Hutton said. “Even though I redshirted and did not play in games, my coaches and teammates helped me grow as a basketball player in practices. With that said, I feel like it is in my best interests to pursue an expanded role at another institution.

“I would like to thank my teammates for the friendship we developed and their support with this decision. And also a special thank you to the Hawkeye fans for making me feel welcome this past year.â€￾

So was he not good enough to get minutes next season and saw the writing on the wall? It just seems like there is such an opportunity for playing time next season that he must have really felt he had no shot. Curious.

So he's going to sit out 2 years? He must be thinking JUCO. That makes sense if he needs to work on his game more.

No. He's everything we lacked on this year's team. Tough, nasty kid that plays defense with an attitude. Explosive athlete! I'm sure he sat on the bench and just got more angry with each passing game.
Now I'm ****** off. The kid with the most heart just left the building.

Then I don't get why he didn't play this season and why he is leaving now? If he's tough, explosive, and has heart then he should be ready to go show that next season shouldn't he?

I was afraid this would happen. I think it's the beginning of the end of my support for Fran McCaffrey. Just one bad decision after another, this year. Oh well.

Everything we lacked was sitting on the bench, the whole time. I think he's smart enough to see that and wonder why he didn't play. Why burn Fleming's redshirt? That's probably what he was thinking.

Sometimes you burn players redshirt if you don't project them to play over the long term. It's one less year that they eat up a scholarship.

Hutton must not have progressed enough during his redshirt year for Fran to tell him he was going to be an integral part of the rotation. It happens. Just laugh at people on this board that base their decisions on HS highlight tapes or some game in the Prime Time League.

I'm sure after the season ends the coach sits down with each player individually and tells them what they see for them the next year and in the future. My guess is Hutton didn't like what he was hearing from Fran and decided to transfer. The timing fits almost perfectly.

For those saying he was a lock down defender and Fran screwed up...are you basing that on his high school play? Guess I don't understand where people come off acting like they know more than the coach who sees them practice every single day.

Wow, do you really think a guy who is transferring because he wasn't going to see much PT next year, would've been the piece that pushed them over the top this year?

Why doesn't Fran have you on his staff asshat?

Thanks Rob for posting the comments from the coach and player.

As soon as I read the thread title I knew this would be upsetting to many who thought very highly of him. It's going to make interesting reading as we read different posters reasoning on why they thought he left. There are several angles that could apply. Grades, missing his family and friends, dissatisfied with being redshirted, desension on the team, a close family member is sick, the future of the program looking bad, not liking favoritism on the part of the coaching staff, he is allergic to end of season melt downs, knows the competition is steep (extremely unlikely and laughable). We're not Duke, North Carolina, Kansas or Kentucky.

Let the guessing begin.
