Iowa-Penn St. Kicking Off at Night

That's what I thought. One of my favorite quotes from my favorite movie. The reason I asked is because I was reading a thread on Reddit where they debating whether or not they were saying "dudes" or "dues" (for beer money). I'm going to go on thinking it is "dudes" even if I'm wrong and people think of me as the flat-earthing moon-landing denying Area 51 living son of DB Cooper (my idol).

its funnier if its Dudes.

PSU is really good, but I don't think they have the horses to run away from Iowa like maybe OSU or Michigan. Again, Iowa has a very deep, talented and veteran group coming back on defense. They are strong up front and wicked talented in the secondary. The LB core is new, but the transfer kid has a lot of P5 starts under his belt. Famous last words, but I don't see PSU putting up much more than 24. Can the offense be just dangerous enough to match that for a chance to win? The pieces are there. We shall see.
Iowa had a great defense last year but I think this years could top even them. I think they could be quite nasty.

I know BF's offenses have been atrocious the last few years, but the reimagining of the KOK years on this board is astounding. KOK is a much more popular OC now than he ever was when he actually was the OC. :)

I honestly don't think KOK is much better or worse at playcalling than BF. When either has had a good QB, they have put serviceable offenses on the field. When they have had bad QB play, not so much. Neither is an offensive genius, but both can coach KF's old school, conservative system competently when they have the players.

Bagging on BF is fashionable these days. I get it. But, recall that in 2018 and 2020 his offenses ranked in the 40s nationally. A BF offense is CAPABLE of being slightly above average. We have seen it. Again, the pieces are there if they can get the OL right. Show some optimism!!!!! Its May.

Much of it really does come down to personnel and I think Iowa got got in a bad cyclical situation with a couple units, because of various reasons. My take anyway.

I like Iowa's chances vs some teams better during daylight than at night. Not that the Hawks can't pull off the upset in Happy Valley at a 'white-out' game, but I'd like their chances a lot more if it was an 11:00 a.m. kickoff.

Actually, I think Iowa has done really well in big night games the last several years going on a decade. I think prior to that they hadn't done so well, then turned the corner and in recent years have.

Lost in the defense is the offense. The best defense is an offense that can keep the defense on the sideline. Ken O'Keefe was masterful at playing keep away. Sure, he took his foot off the throttle and kept us from garnering absurd statistics, but he also protected Norm Parker. If last year's offense could have mustered just a few more first downs and shifted TOP by 5 minutes the defense would have been absolutely legendary from a statistical perspective. The offensive ineptitude against Ohio and Michigan definitely did not help the defense.

Your fond memories of KOK are quite inconsistent with my memory of Hawk fan's feelings about him when he was OC. Diametrically different. I recall many fans being quite pleased when he decided to take the gig with the Dolphins. But hey, if I had your handle I guess I would be defending KOK's ghost as well.

Personally, I don't see much difference between KOK and BF. I think there are probably less than 20 guys out there that could truly make Iowa's offense into something formidable given the limitations placed on the offense by KF.

The five years KoK left the Iowa program, Iowa didn't win a single bowl game.

The year he came back....yup...Hawks were back in the bowl win-column.

Not a strong take. First, as Fry loves to state, bowl games are largely exhibition games that have dubious relevance to whether a team had a successful year. Maybe that was less true back during this time, but I think this is a marginal measure of the state of the program.

Second, one of those terrible seasons and bowl losses was 2015, when Iowa set a school record with 12 wins, went 12-0 during the regular season, was a yard away from winning the conference title game, and lost to a really good Stanford team in the Rose Bowl. It was arguably one of the best seasons in modern program history. So, your take that KOK's departure left Iowa in a state of disrepair because of bowl losses is pretty weak sauce.

To the extent there was a dip in the program overall when KOK left, which arguments can be made, don't you think the finger is better pointed at Greg Davis's presence rather than KOK's departure? And if KOK's return was the magic elixir, he came back as BF's assistant and QB coach, so.....

Stellar observations. Not only did we not win a single bowl game (and at that point they still kind of had some cache which is now completely gone) we got utterly embarrassed. We had that 4-8 year where offensive production fell off a damned cliff. We didn't cross the 50 against LSU (maybe we just nudged over it once but our two scoring drives totaled 5 yards (I believe one was on a defensive TD that was called back because the dude celebrated early). Hawkslayer Bowl. Standford game. It was a horrific run when O'Keefe was gone.

Yeah, we had a nice year in 2015, but that was largely a function of how bad our schedule was that year.
