Iowa HS Wrestling Tourney...why jack with it?

Also these are the top teams in the state with the top kids from the state. Why on earth would you want to possibly wrestle your first round individual opponent in Team duals the day before?
The fact that SE Polk planned on wrestling their JV team already makes this a joke.

Tough break, not a fan of this format.

5:30 — Jesup’s Ryan Hall has taken the place of injured Nashua-Plainfield junior Cody Marks in the 1-A bracket at 138 pounds. Hall placed third behind Marks on Saturday at the district meet. Hall placed fourth last year at 125 pounds.
3:15 — Nashua-Plainfield’s semifinal victory came with a cost. Junior Cody Marks, a state qualifier at 138 pounds, suffered a hand injury and Nashua-Plainfield coach Al Frost said Marks’ status for Thursday’s opening round of the individual tournament is uncertain.
“Unfortunately, now we might be one of those statistics where a guy gets hurt in the duals and is not able to wrestle in the traditional,” Frost said. ”We don’t know yet.”

If they are both held in DSM around the same time it makes "logistical" sense. Maybe the schools felt as though something needed to be done about the days missed. I'm not sure I buy the "Money" reason, unless the duals in CR was a money losing proposition.

You cant do it until sectionals are over!
You get the teams in the tournament through sectionals.

No, you can do it before sectionals. Just do like they did it for 3A this year and take the top 16 ranked teams by a certain date and those are your regional dual qualifiers.

3A always took the district champs into a regional but couldn't this year therefore used the top 16 that were ranked and the same could be done in the other 2 classes.

this is why se Polk did what they did today

I would've done the same exact thing. The individual tournament is the bigger deal of the two and look at the Nashua wrestler's case, he may not have a chance to compete for an individual title. Huge bummer if he can't. I feel really bad for the kid.

I did not know that they changed the format until I read this thread, but I definitely do not like it one bit. Does anybody know if this is a permanent change going forward or if it's just a one year thing?

Like Jon said, why mess up a good thing? I do think that the IHSAA makes more $$$ doing it this way though, Jon. Lots more people in town and if they're coming to support an individual, and that kid's team is in the duals, then they're most likely going to the duals too. And even maybe some people without a team in the duals may come early and attend, like an avid wrestling fan, or someone with interest in a different team or individual. It's just that the chances for more ticket sales goes way up if they're at the same time.

Wyatt Schultz (from The Predicament) gave an update on 1600 AM yesterday. They asked him about the crowds. He said that the 1A and 2A crowds were decent, with the normal large groups following teams like Creston, Don Bosco, and West Delaware. He said that the 3A crowds were much following with a lot less following.

I'd like to see the actual attendance numbers. From what I was told the attendance was significantly down and there was minimal noise/enthusiasm from the crowd.
As a fan I would have been extremely disappointed as many of the top teams did not wrestler their kids who qualified for the individual tourney. In fact, SE Polk did not even weigh in any of their kids who qualified for the individual tourney and Linn Mar only weighed in kids who did Not qualify. When two of the #1 teams go down in the first round you know something is wrong. The only finals match that was worth watching was in Class 2A. (1A and 3A were complete blow outs)
Being a graduate of Nashua HS I had mixed emotions about them winning the state title since their competition was less then par. Coach Frost biggest concern was losing a wrestler to injury and that's exactly what happened.
I'm very hopeful they move the State Duals back to its original format to make it more exciting and competitive for the wrestlers and fans.

the noise is down because the well sucks!!! the barn you could get down on the mat and scream and yell your kid on and now its just plain boring to me
