Iowa Hoop Stats Adding Up; Basabe a Star

I too noticed in the last couple of weeks that Melsahn had actually begun elevating his game in conference . He reminds me of a shorter Amare Stoudemire.

The thing about Basabe and Marble is their length....they play much bigger then their height. Archie is also intriguing.....he's not a klutz, has good hands, IMO, doesn't seem to be playing in a league that is beyond him. Obviously not much of an offensive threat, but he plays a role.

I think he could be a solid all-round player for us next year. Fran has already helped to improve both Archie and Brommer's games this year.

I wonder where are those people who were criticizing Fran's inability to get quality recruits??????? Apparently Cartwright and Basabe don't count because they weren't highly recruited... whatever....

Cartwright's emergence will pay greatest dividends for Marble's development. It means Marble can play his natural 2 or 3 spot rather than the 1. I can't wait to see what Basabe and Marble do next year after adding some bulk. Marble has struggled at times this year but the scorer in him from his dad is definitely fun to watch even if the shot doesn't always fall. He has a knack for knowing when to attack the hole. Basabe could average a double-double next year if he continues developing and adds bulk. Then McCabe will fall in as a good 3rd option. Wonder how this recruiting class will look with these cornerstones.

A couple of thoughts....1. I'm curious about Crean's comment regarding Lickliter. Why would he do that (I understand they are friends but...). What does he have to gain by saying that and I'm wondering what FMc thinks about that. I would love to hear a response from FMc about his thoughts on that.
2. I heard somewhere that Jimmer Fredette had his college choice down to BYU and Siena. Fran almost got him. Is this true as I'm just wondering. I'm liking FMc's eye for talent.
3. If Mel B stays for four years at Iowa I will be excited as hell because I believe he's going to be a superstar. I love his game and IT FEELS GREAT TO REALLY ENJOY WATCHING THE BBALL TEAM AGAIN. Go Hawks!!!

Jimmer did have Siena in his final 2. Fran said himself that they almost got him. As for Basabe, he is only scratching the surface of what he will be. When you think about his ability to hit from 10 to 15 feet and his ability to put it on the floor, he's the type of player that Iowa hasn't had in awhile. Not to mention his presence on defense really alters game plans. Marble has all the makings. He is uncanny with his ability to finish around the rim even with his slight build. He is a good shooter, much like McCabe and I think you'll see that next year. I'm extremely interested in who Fran gets with those last two schollies for next year. There seems to be a lot of momentum right now with the team turning the corner and that new practice facility nearing completion.

I still do. And remember, I was (and still am) talking senior year.
When Marble is a senior I see him as the best player in this frosh class.

Boy stormin, if your right and I can see how Marble could evolve into the best player in this class, that means that he will be right in tune for conference MVP, because Basabe is going to be unstoppable.

Stormin, you may be right that by the time Marble is a senior he will be the best...but only if Basabe turns pro early ;)

Devyn has upside..not doubt...but his upside is not as obvious as Basabe. We hope DRM can become a better shooter. No guarantee of that. We expect for him to add strength, I think that can happen. I think he can become a very good defender, too.

With Basabe, you can see it all there.

You have to remember that Dev isn't playing his natural position. He is playing out of position for the greater good of the team. He'd be much more comfortable at the 3 or 2 spot instead of the 1.

Give him time on the wing, you'll see something special.

The key for this program is to not have to rely on incoming freshmen as significant contributors. When incoming freshmen are used in supportive roles until it's their time to be key players, our program will have arrived as a consistent program. Hopefully, every season after this one will move in that direction. It will be nice to not have our leading scorers transfer every year.

Tell that to Calipari :D

Yes, this is college basketball, not college football. It has evolved to freshman being significant contributors and expected to. Many of the great players only last 1-2 years before heading to the NBA. The loss of Ben Brust was probably the greatest political ploy which occured in the state of Iowa last year. Fran freed up a scholarship while making it appear Iowa was victimized by the evil Badgers. Very nice!

Also want to clarify this for Seth and Jon (re: Marble vs. Basabe) -

I think Basabe has the better career at Iowa, however I think Marble is the better player by the time both are senior.

One can have a better 4-year career and not be the better player?
