Iowa beats Alabama by 8 points!!!!

Believe me, I'm not pining for the days of Lick. Just pointing out that McCabe has been great and we're still waiting to hear from Besabe, which I think is the complete opposite of people's expectations. W/r/t Cody Larson, yes, he's redshirting at Florida, but he'd definitely play for us. I wish we had him regardless of coach... in fact, I think he'd be a great fit in McCaffery's system. Such is life. The important thing is to have the right guy steering the ship, and I feel a lot better about that than I did a year ago.

Before tonight he was averaging 7pts and 7 boards. Not bad for a true freshman.

Give Besabe a break, lots of guys have inflated stats playing in the PTL, since there is little if any defense played. He's a freshman, give the kid a chance.

This was the one small bit of consolation last night after a depressing finish to what should have been a huge win for the football team.. I don't care if Alabama is down, beating an SEC opponent is a nice win for this group. Let's keep building on it!

Monday vs. Long Beach St. for 4th place in the tournament.. Coming out of this tournament 4th place is as good as I would realistically have hoped for. Sure wish it was on t.v.!

They might be Lick's recruits, but their talents would be totally stiffled under Lickliter. Iowa would be holding the ball until the last second and Gatens would be firing up a 30 jumper...

Totally agree. That's why I was pointing out the irony of McCabe having so much success in a system that's the polar opposite of what he signed up for. Big contrast with Basabe, who, regardless of the stats, looks lost a lot of the time. I just think it's interesting/ironic, that's all. I'm sure it will change in the weeks to come. Apparently saying anything that can be construed as a positive thing about Lick dredges up the whole debate. It's over... let's move on.

Way to go Hawks! Even if Bama is/was down this year, this is still a quality win. Especially for the confidence of this young team.

The two things I learned last night...I am absolutely ready to completely focus on the Iowa basketball team...and I need to stop drinking myself stupid after the football team loses.

Basabe's upside is tremendous...

not sure it does much good to make judgments on players 4 games in. McCabe came in as a much more refined player than Basabe. McCabe's all-around skills are good and he will be a very solid 4-year player for Iowa.

Basabe has the athleticism to be able to run and defend in Fran's system, but it will take him some time to figure out how he can be successful at this level. He's looked a little lost in the first few games, which is not at all surprising.

bama expected to make this tourney this year, which is Grant's second year. they have a TON of talent and were generally picked to finish second in the SEC West. Greene was a 5-star recruit and they have six other 4-star guys by my count. this was a very good win, guys.

i was impressed with our 3/4 trap and also our ability to break their press.

I agree with this. He is also leading the team in rebounds and blocked shots so he is contributing.

I'm guessing those complaining about Basabe haven't been watching. No, he's not putting up eye popping numbers, but he has been solid. He has some nice moves inside, rebounds well and will be a good one with some experience and time in the weight room.

Basabe is just raw and if Iowa had any depth whatsoever, he would be redshirted. This is not a rip on Basabe by any means. What I see out of him is what Iowa has lacked for a long time. He is a big that can run all day, doesn't have to get in the best position to rebound because of his length and athleticism and a player that can come from the weakside and help and block a shot and if he doesn't he still gets the rebound. One year of development would have done him wonders for his offensive game, but that isn't what Iowa needs, he is providing everything that Iowa needs right now. Give his offensive game time and he will be the best player out of this freshman class. I do like what McCabe is doing he is the most ready player and will be very solid, but Basabe can develop and become a player Iowa hasn't seen for some time.
