Interesting article on trying to increase ticket sales & better fan relations at Iowa

I definitely do it for my kid; when he's gone it might become less frequent because I don't see myself moving any closer.

The AD should see this as a sign of impending doom. Seriously, this board is filled with true fans who are talking about their exit strategy from season tickets. What about the lesser caliber of fans?

I could also afford it and if I lived closer would probably buy tickets, at least while my 11 y.o. is at home. I cut out cable last year and that was $1,300 a year which takes care of a big share of it. I live 5 hours plus away from Iowa City, so there's a ton of gas, wear on my vehicle, meals, and a hotel room every time we go. My kid is diehard Hawkeye fan, so to compromise we go to the spring game every year, and catch for sure one B1G game, sometimes two. We are two hours closer to Lincoln than Iowa City, so if it's a year the Hawks play there we try to hit that one. Since we aren't making the drive every other weekend I justify splurging for really good seats at the games we do go to.

Aside from those games, it's just as much fun to get together with my buddy's family and watch games on TV. We make food, take a leak whenever we want, and get to see everything in HD while being warm.
I used to pay close to 10K a year on Iowa athletics. Ever since the crack down, I refuse to go back and I live 20 miles from the stadium.

I'm really currious to know what part of that crackdown to you is leaving a bad taste

Was it no more drinking after the game in lots?
Zero tolerance on public urination or open containers?
Vehicle checkpoints catching drunk drivers?
Cracking down on excessive drinking on game days?
The fact that I paid $5000.00 for a parking pass in the RV lot next to Kinnick, just to have cops harass me and accuse me of smoking marijuana. Cops wanting to walk through my RV and to see what I have. Especially since I don't do drugs. Then I had to listen to Gutless Gary Barta tell me lies when I took issue with being treated like that. Any University stupid enough to do that to a fan that pays out close to $10,000.00 for parking and season tickets, doesn't deserve my money! And they'll never get it back. Ever. Not until Gutless Gary is gone and I get a letter of apology.
Are those good reasons?
And these same cops went right up the line and accused others of smoking dope, wanted to inspect their RV, etc. It was easily the most unprofessional thing I've ever seen a business do to their customers. What they are dealing with now and the continued decline in attendance is the result of these short sighted, dick brained ideas. The chickens are coming home to roost. Neither my 15 or 17 year old sons care to watch Iowa sports. I used to take them to every home game for the first 8 and 10 years of their lives, respectively. If they couldn't care less about watching Iowa sports, what's the chance they'll be season ticket holders in the future? They are both high honor roll students. They'll have the kind of discretionary income that the University of Iowa wants to court, when they are adults. Not only did the crack down cost them my 10K but it cost them 2 future Iowa season ticket holders.

I don’t have the ability to spend even close to that amount, but if I did I wouldn’t.

That probably doesn’t make you feel better but that’s all I got haha :)

He was a high school math teacher who said he was from Cherokee. He kind of appeared out of nowhere and vanished.
Ah. I didn't attend HS in Cherokee. I was from the school district SW of there. Willow/River Valley. Cherokee is just the largest closest town to where I was from anyone may have actually heard of. It's where we went to hang out, movies, groceries all that sort of stuff cause my hometown is less than a dot on the map.

Targeting people with open containers on Melrose. $140 fine. And if they felt you were public intox, a trip to Kinnick jail.
Two hour limit after the games, then you had to move on. Or a face a fine, or loss of parking privileges.
There weren't any more checkpoints I'm aware of. This was pre-game and after-game festivities hassling.
No 'open' liquor at a tailgate. So people simply put it in their cars. How ludicrous.
Telling people to turn down their music or a fine or loss of parking privileges.
Telling people there were too many folks congregating in one spot. Move on or a fine.
University Heights cops were doing frequent walk-throughs even on private property.
On and on.....

I've gone to every away B1G stadium other than Nebraska. Wisconsin is a good example...you can openly walk around with a beer or drink in your hand. The party atmosphere not only isn't penalized, it is embraced. Sure, some got out of hand, as will always be the case, and they were dealt with. But 99% of the crowd behaved within normal limits.

Iowa was penalizing the 99% due to the activities of the other 1%.

And again most of the same people on here bitching about everything, state we need the best of everything and then say they don't want to pay as much as is being asked.

From these figures, does the school really need to strong-arm the loyal season ticket holders for their discretionary income?

And again, I got a mass-produced publication from the Iowa athletic department immediately after the new tax plan was unveiled. It dealt with the elimination of the "excise tax" deduction. Their stance..."well, too bad for you, we're not retracting or modifying anything for 2018."

In other words, they will be milking the season ticket holders yet again and will sit back and see how season ticket sales go.

This sounds like a specific outlier and not the norm I've never been harassed by any cops the past 10 years.

Also just because you give or spent x amount of dollars doesn't immediately grant you special privileges with the law. You may think it should.......but nope....

Public road...use your head

Two hour limit after the games, then you had to move on. Or a face a fine, or loss of parking privileges.

Is there really any reason for you to be there that long after a game?

There weren't any more checkpoints I'm aware of. This was pre-game and after-game festivities hassling.

Def more cops in specific places

No 'open' liquor at a tailgate. So people simply put it in their cars. How ludicrous.

Literally having liquor has never been an issue where I'm tailgating.

Telling people to turn down their music or a fine or loss of parking privileges.

Haven't had any problems with the rest of this either, but I don't own private property in IAC.

Are the places you're walking around are also part of the campus and not a public road?

I wasn't breaking any laws. Did you not read my post? I was falsly accused of breaking laws and harrassed. And I wasn't the only one. So, there were a lot more " outliers" up and down the row.
I'm sorry to inform you but what I do with my discretionary income will always come with some expectations. Paying a lot of money to be harrassed is not something I'm willing to tolerate. Being lied to by the AD just added more nails to the coffin.

If a cop even remotely smells pot in an area he has the right to start asking questions. Are you that dense?

You seem like you're just butthurt QQ

There was no pot! Of the 30 people in the immediate area, not a single person smelled any pot! It was 7 am. I know what pot smells like. They were making that shit up as a reason to violate people's rights to privacy. Nothing less.
Are YOU that dense? Or are you a cop by profession?

Okay if you say so. It's your word against theirs at this point

No. It's my word and MY MONEY. As soon as I held my ground and refused to be accused of breaking the law, they moved right on down the line! They didn't walk through my RV. I never got a fine or a ticket for open carry. I didn't get anything confiscated or poured out! I guess my word won out when it counted. You either work for the AD or you're one of the cops that like to violate people's rights. Either way, you LOST!

Ah yes the anti-drinking guy has returned to show his superiority over everyone. You guys all know you don't need to drink to enjoy a game
/mocking

Iowa City police use gestapo tactics to try to intimidate people into giving them permission to search. I haven't had any game day issues but have had plenty on other days.

I've lost nothing and you're money and the cops again have nothing to do with each other.
