If the Cubs.....

Then why even watch?

I mean, if you're going to give up on them after a full month and a week of a 6 month season, there really is no point in even watching.

I'm a huge fan I watch every game and I didn't even start to try before the season even started...so did I give up? It's fairly easy to evaluate a baseball team and predict how things will end up. I saw a just below .500 baseball team. That doesn't change how much I like the Cubs. If they defy my expectations then great. If not. I still like the Cubs.

The Cub fan mantra in a nutshell! :)

Another bat under .200. Money well spent. Try a minor leaguer. You never know when a Colvin will come out. My point is the Cubs don't trust or build their farm system (with the exception of some pitchers) and they need to do that versus spend tons on free agents.

How is that Nady's fault? I'll bet he has less than 50 at bats so far this season, and we're five weeks. Hard to get any consistency when you're not getting any playing time.

Besides, no one had any idea that Colvin was going to play as well he did in Spring Training, let alone make the team. Do you really think that if the Cubs thought Colvin would be ready this year that they would have signed Nady?

Lee is a free agent at the end of this year. There will be nothing tricky about letting him go. Gonzalez is 27 years old, and we could sign him to a 5 year deal and get him in the prime of his career. Yanks, Red Sox and Dodgers already have their 1B, so we won't be in a bidding war against them.
The 8 year deal we gave Soriano was so damn rediculous. Hendry paid him as if he was going to hit 40 + HRs and steal 40+ bases during his time in Chicago. Soriano's age alone should have told Hendry that Soriano wasn't going to continue to steal bases like he had prior coming to Chicago.

If you really think that's why Hendry signed Soriano, I can't do anything for you. Before that signing, can you think of any time where the Cubs signed the premier free agent on the market, in any offseason?

George Bell? Really, you bring up a good point.

Look at this list of Top 10 Free Agent signings for the Cubs (and cringe). I don't think it is truly serious. (Dave Kingman is on the list) :)

Who they ended up trading to the White Sox for Sammy Sosa.

Anyhow, the underlying point is that under McPhail, the Soriano signing never even would have been considered, let alone done. It wasn't a coincidence that his resignation and the signing of Soriano were separated by about 6 weeks.

You are right, as usual. I do agree that the signing was no coincidence. McPhail was used to doing it on the cheap for the Twins, so it was not going to happen under him. The Cubs have tried to sign some big free agents in the past, but seemed to fall short a lot of times.

By the way, Lick just got a mention on the TV broadcast after Brad Stevens just sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame.

Watching the Cubs this year is like watching the Hawkeye offense when Jake was our QB. Very, very painful on the eyes.

I don't believe in curses. A lousy front office is one of the reasons why you don't win a world series in over 100 years.. Ditching Mark DeRosa and signing Milton Bradley, for example. Not keeping Joe Carter and Rafael Palmeiro are a couple more.

Right now, the Cubs are stuck with huge contracts for players who aren't producing much. They're stuck with these for now (Z, Soriano, etc.), I'm afraid, but it's obvious that the core group of players they have aren't getting it done. Major changes need to be made to that lineup when it's possible.

Yeah, Soriano is hot lately, but he swings at anything you can reach with two bats. He's a classic mistake-pitch hitter. Problem is, in the playoffs, opposing pitching is good and they don't make many mistakes. Hence Soriano's lifetime struggles in the postseason.

DING!!!DING!!!DING!!!
Our front office is terrible. That move to get rid of De Rosa was beyond retarded. He had half of our team hits in the playoffs two years ago. He was clutch while everybody else chocked. So, lets get rid of him!? Then lets bring in Miles and Bradley? That was a train wreck everybody should have seen coming a mile away. We also have gotten rid of lots of good young players in the last two years. Of all the big money guys I would most like to see Lee go. Also getting rid of Reed Johnson was stupid. He didn't get paid a ton; he gave you great bang for your buck. He did lots of little things very well.

Cubs are only 5.5 back. Win a few series in a row and they're right back in it. All hinges on DLee and Rammy figuring it out. I think D Lee is getting there. 2-4 yesterday.
