I think Morehouse nailed it

Phase III ('05-'07) - Fat Cats. This was the phase that should have cemented our status as one of the upper-echelon programs in the country. Instead, it was a phase of inflated egos and "fat cat" mentality. We started the phase off with a bang....signing a Top 10 recruiting class and looking to capitalize off the previous phase. Instead we got an Adam Shada salute in a loss to Northwestern, City Boyz, Inc., a losing record in 2006, and capped the phase off with a loss to Western Michigan, the seniors going out to a chorus of boos from the crowd, and missed out on a bowl for the first time in 7 years.

I don't buy that. 2005 was the year of horrible officiating. Started with Oklahoma vs Oregon ended with Iowa vs Florida. and Tate's Senior year would have been much better had he not been injured prior to the 1st game. Saying the Fat Cat mentality was the cause of of those 2 years is far from accurate. However, I would concede that the cancer did exist at that time. 2007 is when the Fat Cats ruled the nest.

Orange Bowl after the 2002 season and 2009 season. If we have another after the 2016 season (or a Rose Bowl), I'll die a happy Hawkeye.

We're not Michigan or Ohio State folks. Sorry to burst your bubble, but we just don't have the financial firepower to compete at the top every year. It isn't going to happen

play for CCG every year, I completely agree. but we should be able to compete for a spot more often then not. (If I need to define compete let me know)

Some of you guys are rediculously narrow in how you break down "eras" or "versions". Judging a HC on 2-3 season run is like judging a batter on how they do in a four game series. It's just sooo narrow. Look at the whole body of work.

It's almost a whole nother topic than what we are talking aobut here..

That might be true, but good old JD has aged far worse. Here is a picture of teh Diesel from a few years ago...

And here is one of him this year...

It's shocking really.

Male pattern eyebrow baldness definitely struck.

I respectfully disagree. Financially, we are one of the Top 15 athletic dept's in the country. Our coach is one of the Top 10 paid head coaches in the country. Finances are not an issue.

Now, if you want to say that we can't compete with those guys from a recruiting-base standpoint or a tradition standpoint....I'd tend to agree with you. But certainly not from a financial standpoint.

It's not narrow if that's how things have fallen out. There's most definitely been 4 distinct phases of Ferentz's tenure.

If you're talking about Fry, then you can see 3 phases in all: 1. Building the Foundation ('79-81), 2. Building a Tradition ('82-'91), 3. Falling Down ('92-'98).

Tru dat - but you left off Michigan vs Iowa which ended our 3 yr home field winning streak.
The Witvorines and the Wolverines were too much to overcome that day

It does have a different feel now...I like it...and I think Brian Ferentz will be worth his weight in gold recruiting. HOWEVER, this year it isn't happening...help is on the way in the form of more experience and the freshman etc...but this year I am afraid it will be like taking a knife to a gun fight with our Dline. Cooper and Company are just too young...but they're talented.

And everyone hating on 2010...we were what...a few plays here and there from challenging for a BIG title....Wisconsin fake punt, Pryor pulling some crazy scramble out of his @$$ on 4th and long to save the game for the Buckeyes. I really think that entire season turned on that fake punt vs Wisky....

I would say the season turned a few weeks later against Northwestern. The week after the Wisconsin game, we came out ****** off and just absolutely mauled a really good Michigan State team. That showed the type of potential that season could have had (as well as beating #12 Missouri without our starting RB and the then all-time leading receiver in iowa history). We had the talent to contend for a Rose Bowl that year, but for whatever reason just couldn't get it done.

Also a few big plays away from being total dogcrap in 2009.

Math wasn't your strong suit, was it Duff. :D That would be a pretty short baseball season if your analogy is to be taken seriously. (15-16 games).

But if you do wanna use that analogy on a MLB level...it would be more like a 37 game run for that batter...which is a pretty substantial sample. Enough to get some guys sent down to the minors.

Adam Robinson's concussion against MSU was a big factor in that season going from on the brink to in the toilet. That cost us a decent bit in the running game and really hurt us bad in the passing game from a blocking and receiving out of the backfield standpoint.
