I think Morehouse nailed it

Iowa 1.0
-The foundation
-Improved speed
-Recharged fan base
-Maybe some HGH
-Bullies of the B1G
-Winning at all costs
-Paved way for stadium improvements

Iowa 2.0
-Improved recruiting
-Maintained 1.0 success
-Stadium improvements
-Orange Bowl win
-Plateau of success
-Stable program

Iowa 3.0
-Barring a disastrous 2012 season - Leveraging previous accomplishments, NFL pipeline, recruiting relationships, and facilities improvements will lead to the best stretch of recruiting in Iowa history.
-New practice facility
-Will play a pivotal role in determining Iowa's ability to compete with Nebraska an Michigan over the next decade.
-Over the next 5 years - Outright B1G Champions once or twice. Bowl bound every year. New Year's day bowl 2-3 times is the expectation.

i think v2.0 started in 2007

I think you always throw out the first two KF years as total rebuilding.

Ver 1 2001 to 2006 (end of Drew Tate years)

Ver 2 2007 to 2011 (Jake to Ricky to JVB)

2008 to 2010 were very good 3 year span of Iowa football. Yes there were some personnel decisions and some last minute losses with some injury issues but overall a very good 3 years out of the 5.

The 2009 season was perhaps the most exciting year in the program's modern history[/QUOTE]

I'd give it the #2 spot. 1997 says hello.

That might be true, but good old JD has aged far worse. Here is a picture of teh Diesel from a few years ago...

It's shocking really.

This is my new all time favorite post. Hi-larious!

ok, then compare the teams overall record during those years and tell me which was more successful.

Don't ask me...that's simply the way I interpreted the post. He said he called 2005-2011 v2.0 so by process of elimination...

Regardless of how you slice it, since 2005 the only thing to hang our hats on is 2009, which was one of the flukiest seasons, certainly in Iowa football history.

Going by his definition of the eras/versions:

V1.0: 42-31 (.580 winning %)

V2.0: 54-35 (.610 winning %)

However, if you throw out those first two years and split the seasons down the middle then....

V1.0: 51-24(.680 winning %)

V2.0: 41-23 (.640 winning %)

Doesn't appear to be all that significant of a difference, but the big thing Iowa had going for it earlier in the decade was consistency. 'V2.0' is buoyed by two good to great seasons. 'V1.0' had three such seasons, and 2001 was pretty good considering where we were the two years previous.

But no matter how you slice it, there's no denying that things have largely gone downhill since 2004. Iowa's had two truly good years since then, and a lot of disappointment/mediocrity.

I think we are actually beginning version 4.0.
Version 1.0 went from 1999 until Drew Tate Took the reins in 2005.
Version 2.0 went from 2005 until on September 27, 2008 - the day Ferentz (O'Keefe, more accurately) benched Jake Christensen for Ricky Stanzi - also the day that Shonn Greene put up 150 yards for the first time.
Version 3.0 ended the day Ken O'Keefe accepted the Dolphins job, Feb. 23, 2012.

Yet some Iowa fans still don't seem to count those "two good years"

Three straight bowl wins over SEC,ACC and Big 12 teams over 08,09,10 are major accomplishments...never been done by Iowa before.
Beating top 5 teams every season from 08-11 is nothing to sneeze at...Iowa rarely had ever done that in the past. Finishing 09 ranked in the top 6 was also a rare accomplishment for Iowa. Winning the Orange Bowl?...never been done by Iowa before. First BCS bowl win since 1959? Been awhile.

Nit-pick it all you want, but Phase II has been solid, after a spectacular 02-04 period.

Duff, that post is hilarious! Post of the month material.

Any discussion of 'versions' MUST include quality of recruiting and player retention. Yes, Iowa had great success in '08 and '09 on the field but simultaneously had subpar recruiting and retention.

Nailed it.

I tend to think of his tenure more in "phases" than I do "versions"....

Phase I ('99-'01) - Laying the foundation. Wins/losses, while important to everyone in the program, was secondary to laying a foundation and instilling a toughness and a "bully" mentality into the team. This phase was capped off by a 2001 victory in the Alamo Bowl and Ferentz proclaiming that Iowa football was back.

Phase II ('02-'04) - Reaping the rewards. All the hard work, all the a$$ kickings we took in the previous 3 years were paid back in spades. We "broke the rock". We were the Bullies of the Big 10. We finished #8 in the country in each year of this phase and played in 3 straight New Year's Day bowl games (one of which was a BCS bowl). We capped off this phase by winning the Cap One bowl in one of the most dramatic finishes in the history of bowl games and sent Nick "The Snake" Sabin off with a crushing defeat.

Phase III ('05-'07) - Fat Cats. This was the phase that should have cemented our status as one of the upper-echelon programs in the country. Instead, it was a phase of inflated egos and "fat cat" mentality. We started the phase off with a bang....signing a Top 10 recruiting class and looking to capitalize off the previous phase. Instead we got an Adam Shada salute in a loss to Northwestern, City Boyz, Inc., a losing record in 2006, and capped the phase off with a loss to Western Michigan, the seniors going out to a chorus of boos from the crowd, and missed out on a bowl for the first time in 7 years.

Phase IV ('08-'10) - Re-Tooling. Coming off the previous phase, the fans and coaches needed something to be positive about. It didn't start out well, though. A QB battle that lasted 1/3 of the way thru the season looked to derail any hopes of making our way back. But in the end, KOK's judgment won out and Ricky Stanzi took over and had one of the best 3 year runs in school history. We toppled 3 Top 5 teams during this time, had a Doak Walker winner, set the record for most wins to start a season, won a BCS bowl game and won 3 consecutive bowls for the first time in school history.....with wins over SEC, ACC and Big 12 teams. Even though 2010 was a disappointing season, we capped the phase off with a dramatic victory over a Top 15 Missouri team.

It'll be interesting to look back in a couple of years to see how this next phase plays out.

Rico the phases seem to be measured by performance, so we will only know if this is the next phase if things change and performance is better, if not maybe we're still in phase 4.

True, however I think with the 2 new coordinators, the switching up of position coaches, the new indoor practice facility, the (what appears on the surface anyway) embracing of "sexy" (more social media emphasis, more emphasis on recruiting, open to combat uni's, opening up of Fort Kinnick), it feels like a new phase. 2011 may just sort of sit by itself as something of a transitional year or a "straw that broke the camel's back" year.

agreed, but hopefully we can look back and classify it by a change in performance (for the better of course). And maybe have a 10 year straight phase ;)

new practice facilities, new (younger) coaches both coaching and out recruiting (B Ferentz, Lavar), new offensive blood (Greg Davis), a more open and relaxed environment (still to be proven) all good.

But if KFz's sphincter still tightens up on the sidelines...we're right where we started.
