I may not be up on this, but is Minnesota considered an NCAA tourney lock?

Maybe you haven't been around, but are we seriously still bringing this up? I think you should take a look at their resume, it is pretty clear with all of their good wins and the schedule they played.

Pretty much a lock, I do not think the committee looks at how a team does at the end of the year like they used to. If they lose today they will be 3-7 in their last 10 games. But earlier in the year they were one of the best teams in the country and had some impressive wins.

According to most experts, yes. Body of work is what matters, and Minnesota's struggles the last 2 months are irrelevant. I may think it's stupid that the last 10 doesn't matter anymore, but that is the way it is, I guess.

If they lose today, I guess we will get our answer on Sunday, though.

Minnesota has won just 5 games in the last 60+ days. They are 5-10 in their last 15 games.
But they are a lock.
Classic case of backing your way into the tourney.

I'm not sure how a person could even check this but has there ever been a team to make the NCAA tournament coming off two straight 20+ point losses?

Minnesota is well on their way to getting blown out again today coming off the Purdue beatdown last weekend.

Maybe they can turn it around but wow is this team bad away from home.

Thanks in advance.

If they get beat by a large margin today, there is no guarantee. Their resume is very worthy, however, I would not be shocked if they were left out with another beat down. They would be finishing the year in a highly unusual way.

Purdue wasn't a 20+ point loss. Apparently margin doesn't matter, it's either win or lose.

As has been mentioned, most experts say yes. They have a high RPI and some 'quality' wins. (Memphis, MSU, @Ill, Wis, Ind) But they've also had some blowout/bad losses recently. (Iowa/OSU were blowouts - Neb/Pur are bad losses)

If you ask me, they are a bubble team that needs to win today.

Just my $.02 .. ..

GO HAWKS!!!

I am usually up on this stuff. With Minnesota they have been so bad over the last two months that I didn't look that closely and figured they were playing their way in by winning two games. Looking at their early schedule that is not the case, obviously. I do believe they are in, period, at this point. But it certainly is interesting that they have been 5-15 and are still apparently in, no problem.

If Minnesota loses, and Iowa wins.

Iowa would have a better overall record, better conference record, split h2h.

Top 50 RPI wins:
Iowa - ISU, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois
Minnesota - Memphis, MSU, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin

Kenpom:
Iowa - 30
Minnesota - 24

RPI:
Iowa - 74
Minnesota - 23

BPI:
Iowa - 48
Minnesota - 30

Sagarin:
Iowa - 35
Minnesota - 28

I don't think Minnesota has a prayer in the NCAA on a neutral floor. They scored 16 points in the 1st half today. Ugh! They could lose by 25 in the 1st round of the NCAAs and then the talk about the Big Ten being overrated will start right out of the gate...rather than the fact that the selection process is likely flawed.

Hey Spank, ISU is down 15 late in the 1st half. I think they slip to the bubble with a blowout loss today. Do you think they are firmly "in" at this point? Their resume isn't impressive at all IMO.

Minnesota and Virginia are the 2 teams that stick out to me as complete conundrums. They both have shown the proclivity for beating anyone on any given night (Minn v Indiana and Virginia v Duke). But have also shown they can lose to anyone....especially away from home. Virginia loss to Old Dominion for crying out loud and OD is something like #317 in the RPI. I think Virginia might have something like 5 losses vs 100+ RPI teams and Minnesota couldn't beat the Sisters of the Poor away from home.

Iowa, while certainly not having an impressive resume, has at least shown consistency.

If ISU loses, they are on the bubble big time. But probably still in for the meantime.
Bad news is if they lose, they probably drop out of the Top 50 RPI, taking a Q Win away from Iowa.

I doubt the win over ISU is going to save us. We are going to have to save ourselves.
