I may not be up on this, but is Minnesota considered an NCAA tourney lock?

I doubt it. When's the last time Minnesota had a good coach? Monson stunk up the joint. Haskins had to cheat to win. I think Minnesota just proved it doesn't matter who it's coach is....they'll simply always stink. If a former national championship coach couldn't get it done there....not many others can.
The two names I'm hearing are Flip Saunders and Shaka Smart. Flip (a Minnesota Native) is said to relish the idea of coaching the Goofers. Shaka Smart was hired at VCU by (then VCU AD and) current Minnesota AD Norwood Teague. I'm not sure either would happen, but both would be an upgrade to Tubby.

GO HAWKS!!!

I'm not saying Minnesota shouldn't make it because Iowa should get their spot. I'm saying Minnesota shouldn't make it because of how they're playing. Whether it be Iowa or someone else that takes their spot I know there is a better team out there somewhere for the NCAA Tournament.

I think Minny is probably fine, given the criteria the committee uses. The Gophers' 5-11 stretch coincided with their toughest part of the schedule (imagine that). Of the 11 losses, 3 were not good - at Northwestern, at Nebraska and at Purdue. Purdue was/is a decent team, so one could argue the merits of how bad that actual loss was. Gophers weren't particularly competitive at Purdue, getting way behind early, coming back to 7 in the second half and then losing by double digits. They also had non-competitive losses at Iowa and at Ohio State.

As much as the Gophers have wheezed down the stretch, their quantity of what are considered good wins remains. Richmond, Florida State, Iowa, Memphis, Stanford, Michigan State, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin are all Top 100 RPI wins. And MSU, Indiana and Memphis are Top 20 RPI wins. Those numbers just can't be ignored.

I wouldn't give a nickel for Minnesota winning a first-round NCAA game against anyone. But they sit in the Top 30 of the RPI at this time and have the quality wins in their back pocket. That will be too much to ignore.

You're probably right but I'm 100% certain Minnesota won't get to play a home game in the NCAA...and home is the only place they have been able to win in over 2 months.

If you are saying the Goofs are still rock solid lock, think again. That couldn't be further from the truth.
You can't suck that bad for 2+ months and say 'Hey, we are in regardless'. Screw them.

What's interesting to me is how everybody is piling on Minnesota and how bad they are... yet they are our best win according to RPI.

I want the hawks to get into the tourney as much as any other hawk fan but we have to earn it. We missed on chances earlier in the year but our oppotunity is in front of us. At this point, Minnesota is more deserving than us even if they aren't playing well as of late.

No way in hell Shakakakaka goes to Gophersota. His next move will be to a big timer, and Rodent U ain't it.

While I agree with MOST of what you say, I think you need to rethink your last sentence. IMHO - it is an epic fail. Sorry.

GO HAWKS!!!

EDIT - Added IMHO .. ..

Is two plus months of sucking basketball 'as of late'? That is 1/2 season of sucking.
I do agree, Iowa has to earn their way. Lets do it!

Minnerodent is definitive proof that the RPI is a complete sham. They are 5-11 over the past 16 games and have been routinely blown off the court.

Who you gonna believe...the RPI or your lyin' eyes? LOOK at them. They SUCK!

Exactly..
I am so sick of hearing about RPI, I could puke.

The Mountain West is the #1 conference, RPI wise. New Mexico is the best team in that conference. You could take the next 8 leagues in the RPI and New Mexico wouldn't win the title in ANY of them.
Hell, they'd be a second division team in the BIG.
That alone proves that the RPI is a sham.

Agreed. After seeing our Hawks absolutely take that team apart the last 32 minutes of that game in Iowa City, there's no doubt in my mind. Minnesota is not an NCAA team, RPI be damned. They got destroyed @OSU, manhandled @PU, and lost again today.

Oh they will probably get in regardless, though. And if they do, I hope a really close look is taken at the selection process in general, and more specifically, the RPI.

Most definitely this.
