I am sorry if this sounds mean spirited....

What exactly is your point? They play who ends up on their schedule.

This years schedule is the opposite for Iowa. Wisky has an easy schedule this year. That's just the way it goes.
I was responding to a post that inferred that Iowa was elite in 2015. I know the schedule is what it is. You are correct about Wisconsin. They are much like our 2015 team but a little better. They could run the table, get beat by Penn St. and get blown out in a bowl game and every poster on here would say they weren't great it was all schedule and they weren't elite but Iowa was Elite in 15. It's the typical irony that you see from our fanbase here.

You cited the schedule in your "Iowa-wasn't-elite" post. That's all I was saying. I'd say we were certainly on the cusp of elite for the second half of the season. But, I agree, the way the Rose Bowl went pretty much nixed that notion. I don't think the loss in the B1G CG nullified it in and of itself.

Hell, BTN has an "elite" program of the Hawks for 1985. We sure didn't look "elite" at O$U or against UCLA in the Rose Bowl (Harmonitis notwithstanding). But BTN seems to think that team was "elite", which could be due, in large part, to the win over #2 Michigan.

Ok. I get your point which is valid.

I never said schedules make a team elite. So you think we were elite in 2015? We had a once in a lifetime season which was awesome but I don't think we were elite. An elite team beats Michigan State and hangs with Stanford.

Actually that isn't true at all. Elite teams lose, elite teams play close games. Lets look at Clemson last year, and obvious elite team that won a National Championship.

2016 Clemson

Clemson beat Troy by 6 points last year.
Clemson lost to Pitt who was 8-5 last year, and wasn't even a top 25 team

2016 Clemson played 3 top 25 teams during the year and Championship game, 2015 Iowa played 3 top 25 teams during the year (and Championship game)

Clemson beats #21 Louisville 42-36
Clemson beats #8 Florida St. 37-34
Clemson beats #15 Va Tech in the ACC Championship game 42-35

2015 Iowa

Iowa beats #23 Northwestern 40-10
Iowa beats #21 Wisconsin 10-6
Iowa loses to #6 MSU 13-16

This myth that teams are playing top 25 teams every week is just that a myth. Most teams will play 2-4 top 25 teams a year. Clemson didn't go through some meat grinder to make the Playoffs last year. Iowa didn't lose to an 8-5 team. Iowa only lost to a top 6 team in a very, very close game that could have gone either way. It happens, even elite teams lose close games. Heck an Elite Clemson team lost to an average 8-5 Pitt team.

Was Iowa "Elite" in 2015? IDK, but they were very, very good at the minimum.

7-5, no off field issues, a warm spot in December. This is what we are. Until the boosters step up, this is what we will always be.

Why do we always have a safety that is a small town Iowa white guy? Because he works hard. He is a heck of a practice player. Who cares if he continually gets burned. He is a Ferentz guy.
POWER AND MONEY RUN IOWA SPORTS NO?Boosters part.

I violently disagree with this post. We were 4 seconds away from beating Penn State. We are 4-2 right now. Why are we assuming we will finish 7-5? Let the season play out. Didn't we finish 12-0 and 8-4 the last 2 years, while defeating FOUR ranked teams, including #2 Michigan? That is a 20-4 regular season record, not 14-10. What are you talking about?

Oh, and by the way, wasn't Jewell a feel good story? He has a chance to be a first team All-American this year. WTF?

This Playmaker dude sounds like the delusional Nebraska fans who can't believe they aren't winning national championships anymore.

This season isn't over yet. Hold your water until all 12 games are played.

Oh, and 7.5 wins per year AVERAGE means that there are a bunch of seasons at 8 wins or more. What the hell is wrong with that??? I don't understand this sophomoric post, I really don't.

I agree with everything you said ... except for two letters ... the OP is now "Haymaker" and not Playmaker.

Video attached for further explanation. ;)

Those two dudes... Man good luck finding a better 'era' of ball being played. Bird might just might have had a bit of a tougher time playing in todays game. But he was still 6'9 with the skills that he had he'd have been really damn good. People forget what a great passer and team player he was. Magics vision and leadership was off the charts. For those of you with kiddos or too young to have seen them, watch their highlights (Bird has one that's like 12 mins long I think that's just ridiculous)

Aside from the accolades he has won, the greatest stat pertaining to Larry Bird:

1978-79 Boston Celtics (without Bird) 29-53.
1979-80 Boston Celtics (with Bird) 61-21.

The core roster is essentially the same except for the addition of Bird. McHale and Parish came in trades for the 1980-81 season. Ainge came in the 1981-82 season and DJ came in the 1983-84 season.

So essentially Bird was responsible for the additional 32 wins.

--------To the original poster. Call the coach by his name.

Like the kiss asses that still call him Capt. Kirk? Gag me!!!

--------the OP is now "Haymaker" and not Playmaker.

Gotta give credit where credit is due....made me laugh out loud

------I remember about 5 years back we recruited a kid like you describe out of Decorah, Iowa. So are you willing to pass on guys like Josey Jewell?

Someone always has to go cheery pick a diamond in the rough....problem is, Ferments recruits almost all of his players from the Decorah's of the world.....he has been lazy for a decade now. Just look where the kids from the first Orange Bowl team came from....night and day difference from now.

---------Ripping high school kids is weak and pathetic. It won’t be tolerated on here. Period.

Rob - I already said that it's not directed at the kids....but how do you bring this subject up without it coming out that way? It's a no lose situation. I do nothing but rip KF for lazy recruiting....have for years. In all seriousness, the longer you are away from state of Iowa,,,,,31 years for me....the more detached you get from the cheering for your local boys to make good in a Hawk uniform. You just want to win. And also, if you are living in an area (Dallas) where losing is not tolerated like it is at Iowa, you get jaded real quick and get pissed when you see TWO 10 year deals given to a coach who has never once uttered the words National Championship as a goal of his. Despite being paid like a coach who expectations are to compete for one....or at least give lip service to the idea. I really did not mean to offend the preps being recruited...I AM sick of Ferments crutch of doing this though!!!

--------Having a program that consistently wins 7 or 8 games isn't settling, it's upper half of the nation.

How many of those coaches make Ferments money? Especially given his non-conference scheduling that all but assures 3 wins.

----Always 7-5? We've won more than 7 games in 3 of the last 4 years haven't we?

Is that what it has come down to? Especially given our pathetic Pre-Season schedule. And no, I'm not realky sorry other than having to single out Try Hard Kids who sleep in their Hawkeye Jam Jams. BTW, Hayden got run out of town for a lot less.....what was his winning % as a double digit favorite?

Yeah, the standards in Iowa are pathetically low. People are happy with 7 wins. Beat 4 crappy non conference teams and win 3 games against the bottom feeders of the conference and we have 7 wins. Outstanding. That is why the Ferentz clan is still in Iowa City.

They didn't look slow compared to MSU. I haven't seen a team they've played this year that looks incredibly faster and more athletic then Iowa. But we haven't played TOSU yet either.

I'm sure you're talking about Florida, Stanford and Tennessee - which, it's incredibly easy to see why that is.

Then you're blind.

I think we'll see it more after the break honestly (The Raider) and I think you'll see our DL go back towards the standing pre-snap. I think Iowa didn't run against IL cause they didn't need to. They didn't blitz once, cause they didn't need too. ISU did look faster I agree, but that's also a biproduct of who and what they play against every week. Iowa runs a system that is built to compete against who they play.

Are you serious? Didn't need to? Newsflash. We aren't a good enough team to hold back because we don't need a certain phase of our game. We're not Alabama. Illinois outplayed us the entire game until the interception by Snyder. Oh, but we are so good we were just toying with them for 3 quarters, then opened it up in the 4th quarter. Ferentz wanted to establish the run, but like every other game this year we couldn't. It was exactly the opposite of your thinking. Ivory Kelly Martin and Toren Young were on the field right away because Ferentz thought we could run all over Illinois like every other team has this year. Oh, but yes, we're saving the Raider package for after the break, and we're also gonna blitz like hell as well, right? Teams will be shocked when we unleash the entire playbook on them.

If our speed sucks that bad, why are 98% of the overthrows to a receiver who actually got behind the defender?

If our speed is so good, then why do we consistently have problems with our receivers getting open? The majority of our targets are to the tight ends.

I joined the Navy in my mid 20's and have lived out of state my entire adult life since. Have lived in the football crazy Florida Panhandle for 15 years and next year will retire here and in the heart of SEC country people don't tolerate losing every bit as much as they don't in Texas.

I take pride in my Iowa roots and feel proud of what Iowa football stands for as a program. We all react to things our own way but how you look at things comes down to a matter of choice. Growing older and hopefully wiser I would like to see us achieve at a little higher level but don't take sports seriously enough for it to bother me if we don't. Living out of state in diehard football country plays no part in it.
