I am sorry if this sounds mean spirited....

honestly - I can count single digits of times out of over 100 games where I saw Iowa matched up against a team that was clearly more athletic and faster then Iowa and it's typically in the bowl game where Iowa is matched up against a team they have no business being matched up against because Iowa fans travel. Until the recent trend of embarrassing bowl games - When Iowa would play teams with an incredible recruiting advantage, Iowa typically neutralized that fact with their scheme and game plan. We get it - we have a bunch of midwest white guys - please recognize where Iowa City is on a map.

----Always 7-5? We've won more than 7 games in 3 of the last 4 years haven't we?

Is that what it has come down to? Especially given our pathetic Pre-Season schedule. And no, I'm not realky sorry other than having to single out Try Hard Kids who sleep in their Hawkeye Jam Jams. BTW, Hayden got run out of town for a lot less.....what was his winning % as a double digit favorite?

Ripping high school kids is weak and pathetic. It won’t be tolerated on here. Period.

Criticize the coaches. They get paid. Don't drag teenagers working their asses off for a scholarship into your agenda.

Amen - we got ding dongs ripping on Bo fricking Bower on here.

Nebraska is more athletic and has more team speed then Iowa... by leaps and bounds. Doesn't look like it tho.

Hayden got run out of town... what alternate history do you subscribe to?

You're right. The last few bowl games were where the lack of speed was most noticeable, and we do have some speed that may be under utilized at times. This year ISU looked somewhat faster and more athletic although we won.

I think it's our zone blocking pro-style offensive scheme that may be less flashy that leads one to believe we are slower. On defense it's watching us try to cover WRs with LBs vs pass happy teams that makes us look slow. More nickel and raider blitz packages would be fun to see, but I know that's not in the cards with our "bend but don't break" philosophy.

I have mixed feelings about this, but, at the end of the day, I'd still take Ferentz over 90% of the FBS coaches in the country. He has his faults as a coach, but is a genuinely good person who runs a clean program, and has a tremendous amount of respect (outside of that dumbass Cowherd) across the country.

That said, does he sometimes start players that are head-scratchers, and does he have a soft spot for seniors regardless of talent level? No doubt, but I would argue that has evolved somewhat over the past 2-3 years. I honestly don't think we would have seen this number of young players on the field 10 years ago. He's heard the criticisms, and, to his credit, seems to be acquiescing a bit (personally, I think Brian has been in his ear about this but who knows).

I would like to see him focus at least a little more on raw athleticism when he recruits, especially at DE and WR, but that's a different discussion.

I think we'll see it more after the break honestly (The Raider) and I think you'll see our DL go back towards the standing pre-snap. I think Iowa didn't run against IL cause they didn't need to. They didn't blitz once, cause they didn't need too. ISU did look faster I agree, but that's also a biproduct of who and what they play against every week. Iowa runs a system that is built to compete against who they play.

How old might you be? Your memory might be lacking a little. Hayden wasn't ran out of town come to find out he was fighting cancer and was just getting old. He left quite the rebuild project for KF to take over because for the couple yrs leading up to Hayden stepping down he wasn't able to recruit worth a darn due to the kids knowing he wasn't going to be around long and other schools negatively recruiting against him on it. Something I hope we don't run into with KF as well the longer in the tooth he gets..
As far as recruiting the 'Johnny Try Hard type of kids' goes EVERY school gets their share of those. Those with a fan base of any kind sure do. Now granted I know what your getting at and you want to be getting the 5 star Epenesa kids at every spot with the other walk ons being just backups and that just isn't gonna happen. Sounds like you need a new school to root for. If your expectations are that high then your just setting yourself up... Go root for Saban or Meyer if you want to be a front runner.

I agree it's our scheme. Teams have figured out our zone run blocking scheme. It's also REALLY obvious outside of Wadley that we don't have speed on the team (or we don't allow it to breathe) because every team plays 10 men in the box against our offense, daring us to go deep. Now that might change if we could actually hit one of those passes, but until we do, and score off of it, teams will continue to load the box.

I think Jewell is a good player. I don't know how he'll translate, or if he will at the next level. I think his numbers are inflated by the fact that Iowa cannot get off the field on 3rd down. When opposing offenses run 80-90 plays and you never leave the field, it's a reason why your tackle numbers will be high. He also seems to cover for Bower a lot. Again, not saying he's a crap player, but can't just look at the numbers.

Our best hope for a bowl game is to play a team that runs the option.

They didn't look slow compared to Penn State

Iowa plays faster than they are because they play sound and assignment football, so they are usually in the correct positions. There are two different kinds of speeds we are talking about. I can see both sides of this argument.

I coach a 5th grade youth league basketball team. Last Monday at practice we were working on plays which involved our pick-and-rolls. I was instructing them to when going off the pick with the ball to have in their mind the 3 potentials options for the play. Already know or be aware of what could develop ahead of time. 1) Drive if no defender stays or switches on you. 2) Hit the guy that picked for you on the roll. 3) Hit he opposite post if his guy leaves to pick you up. I tell them those are the 3 things you want to look and be ready for driving off this pick, as this will allow you to play faster. I used these exact words.

Point is preparation and understanding allows players to play faster, separate from just the speed of the player factor.

Kirk is driven to be above average...but not driven to risk what is, for what might be....and end up at "risk"

He is now driven to get his son into the captain's slot...this isn't accomplished by risk...it is accomplished by being a bit above average, go to a meaningless bowl, schmooze big money fans and others.

Kirk is a perfect fit for Iowa...forever...nice, tolerant fans for the most part...who don't like being "losers" and are happy being 7-5, 6-6, with an aberration at times.

Personally, I am tired of it, worn out...but many others are content with such "success" of smoke and mirrors...all types of fans in Hawkeye Land.

Kirk is the king of the kingdom...few dare rattle the throne...he or she might be banished from the kingdom...or, oh no, worst of all...King Kirk might leave us without a King...and the Kingdom will fall...or, perhaps excel...

I'm glad that people think a pre-season and mid-season All American who leads the B1G in tackles by a large margin is a "good" player. ...people NOT quite sure though....

I've heard it all when someone describes Iowa football as "Smoke and Mirrors"

Just remember we're Iowa, we can't expect better than an offense that ranks near the bottom of the entire nation. We just can't get the type of players to score points here.

I still say if we have an offense that ranks right in the middle of the nation we win 8-9-10 games a year with our schedule. This is with the "feel good story" recruits we get.

And even better, we're more fun to watch. If we're going to settle for 7-8 wins a season, can we at least have a team that's fun to watch?

Rule of thumb, don't feed a dude who thinks its funny to misspell someone's name. That's grade school stuff. Playmaker needs to grow up.
