how many of you tried "controlled substances" in college

Re: With all due respect mrolympia, that is BS.

You act like you would be one way if you weren't a football player but you would be completely different if you were? It is immaturity, in most cases, that leads to this type of behavior. To say you would be more responsible/mature if you played football at Iowa is so bogus. You would be the same person you would have been otherwise, except maybe you would have had a bigger head and been LESS mature than you would have been if you didn't play football at Iowa.

They are college kids, whether they play football or not. They will make mistakes, whether they play football or not. To act like one would not make mistakes or one would be more mature if one played D1 football is ludicrous.

But you aren't alone in your belief. I'm sure many others think the same thing about themselves.

Only in your world are multiple accounts of criminal activity "mistakes" or "accidents." He knew what he was doing was illegal and there was no mistake about it.

Good for you. I'm sure that choice is not always so easy with so many around you glorifying it. I have friends well into their 40's now whom have never had a drink. They don't feel ad and they were always still the life of the party when younger. Your father is proud I'm sure. I always felt and still do, that beer is my drug of choice, I can still have full control over myself, and I know my limitations.

Then again, you are always on here or must be watching and analyzing games, so you're staying busy.

This is true lol. This is my drug, and I admitedly don't practice moderation :D But at least this is legal.

I will probably get pretty slizzered on my 21st in March, mostly to appease the large amount of people who have had that date circled on their calenders. But after that, it will be occasional drinks, and little more than that.

Don't cave in, man! I didn't drink in college either and never wanted to, before or after 21. Years later I've had old friends tell me now that they wished they would have been like this.

I'm just gonna go for one night. It'll happen one way or another, because if I'm not volunteering, they'll be slipping stuff in my Pepsi lol, so I figure I'm better off volunteering myself for one night (my birthday also leads into spring break, so I don't have to worry about it interfering with classes). Let'em see what would happen once, then never again.

I'm a current student at Iowa. I don't drink (I've had 3 sips of beer in my life: once at age 7, and twice in the past year, both in laid back settings), NEVER touched drugs, period. It helps that my dad is a (now former) probation officer, and 1. he would kill me for being like a lot of the people he had to deal with, and 2. he's a human lie detector, so he'd have found out.

have a beer, lighten up, and live a bit. Are you holding out on getting laid too out of fear of your old man?

I don't chalk trying cocaine up too one of those crazy things college kids do.

Drinking..... sure.

Not cocaine.

He's not THAT tough on stuff. Now that I'm out of high school, he wouldn't really care. I just choose not to drink because I don't want to. Doesn't mean I don't have a good time. I'd appreciate it if you didn't tell me how to live my life.

good point, I shouldn't tell you how to live your life. You are missing out on a lot of fun by not drinking in college though. A lot of crazy stories and experiences. Being slighly impaired creates these stories. You are only in college once is my ADVICE.

I've got my hands full with school already. Partying would cause me to flunk a few classes, which will p*ss my parents off pretty good. Since they're the ones paying for my education, that's probably not a good idea :D

Sobriety date: 2/18/2002

Not going to get into everything I did, drank, tried over the years. Don't judge if you don't understand.

No offense to the OP but "trying" controlled substances seems not quite what was going on at DJK's and his roommate's pad, at least according to the police complaint.

a little from column A & a little from column B. Nothing major. Parents should know and educate the kids. even as strict as you are with them you can never predict the situations they will deal with, nor the stress that could compound the problems.

Ditto. My parents were both very strict don't drink, don't do drugs types when I was a kid. So, in high school, I didn't go near anything. But when I got to college, the leash came off and it was open season since everything was so available. So yes, I tried a little of column A and column B as well. But the hangovers/side effects you get from some substances are terrible and I learned very quickly from what to stay away. My way of learning was to try it myself and just telling kids "Just say No" does no justice in teaching the power of a substance can have over a person. It's scary. Anyway, after a year of fun, I decided to just stuck to beer and the green stuff....and junk food.

+1
Trying and selling are two differnt things....

Yes they are, but DJK also wasn't "trying" coke, he was "using" and that is a big difference as well.

For the record, I smoked a little weed, but since I didn't inhale it doesn't really count right? Now the cigars I smoked.....well I won't get into that.

Depends. What else did you do with those cigars? :D

For smoot27.

Please don't put words in my mouth. I never used the word "accident" and I think we can all agree that he made a mistake, whether he did it with full knowledge of what he was doing (which he obviously did) or not, it was definitely a mistake. Additionally, although I was addressing this specific situation somewhat, I was also talking in more general terms, as that is what I was responding to, a general statement made by another poster and not this specific instance.

I am not saying he shouldn't be facing consequences for his actions. He made his bed. I am sad that he made mistakes and it will negatively impact a young person that has a bright future that will now be much more difficult. I would feel that way about anyone. That doesn't mean there aren't consequences for one's mistakes that need to be paid.

Hopefully he will turn things around and make good decisions going forward, regardless of his career path.

There's a lot of coke in Iowa City, lots of college kids doing it. I highly, highly doubt DJK is the only Iowa football player who does coke.

Using or even abusing a drug (legal or non) is very common - and alot of people won't admit what they did when they were younger or not. I know many people personally in some high places that were pretty wild when they were younger.

The point wiht DJk is that he was stupid enough to live with a drug dealer. That lack of intelligence and weakness is beyond disappointing.

Sure he is young, but that is no excuse.

Nope. Complete waste of money for one thing, and I guess I just don't see the attraction in getting drunk/high.

18 was the legal drinking age in Iowa in "my time". I was still in high school...but the thought of buying booze/drinking never even occurred to me.

That is not to say I don't have an occasional adult beverage....but it is very occasional and rarely exceeds one.

It just isn't my thing.
