How Iowa lost Melvin Gordon

Oversigning is an issue that's gotten attention and there have been efforts to curb it. Criticize that practice all you want, because it's clear that most conferences and even the NCAA have a problem with it. But as for paying players under the table and such? Yeah, that's not going away, so you either get on board or risk falling behind.

That doesn't mean you won't have success if you don't do it, but it'll be spotty success -- not consistent.

And in any case, a systemic issue like illegal recruiting tactics and players being self-centered are two totally different things. It's not against the rules to pick up a phone and talk to a kid after he's committed.
 


He committed his future to a Head Coach and Position Coach who called his family as often as possible. A couple years alter both those people aren't there anymore. Great choice, and best of luck, but I can't get worked up about one single running back.

So Melvin Gordon flipped to Wisky, was this one of those offseasons where the running storyline is about Iowa having too many running backs and not enough carries to satisfy all of them. That seems to be the storyline every other offseason, I think it was Wegher and Jewel and A-Rob at media days with a picture of all three guys holding the same football. Real priceless pose there.

Robinson, Wegher and Hampton were all either gone or known to be on their way out before Gordon flipped. Iowa had Coker coming back, and that was pretty much it. Gordon definitely wouldn't have had trouble getting carries.

It's liek teh "take a knee" approach on the recruiting trail. Seriously, this guy has got to go. How much further can we fall behind?

KF is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All Hail to kf. He simply can never be replaced and we will never get anybody even close to as good as he is!!
 








Yeah, but their head coach got out of Dodge as fast as he could to avoid the crazy fans and Athletic Department. Now they have the guy from Utah State and the same crazy fans and a tougher division now that OSU is turned around and eligible for the postseason.

Mark Weisman would smash him like a hammer smashing a nail. I never really followed the guy since he left and became irrelevant to me. What I would have been worried about would have been that Weisman would not have got a shot at rb if this other guy had stayed. He might be good as a backup to Weisman kind of a 1 2 punch. But I've never seen him play so I don't know. Maybe he could transfer back and it could be the 1 2 with Daniels.

How can you guys have this long of a thread about Melvin "I Gave Them My Word" Gordon without someone bringing up this gem:

"I'm not going anywhere. I gave them my word, and that's it. I know a couple of schools may come at me until I sign the letter. When we start practice whenever next fall, I'll be in Iowa City."--Melvin Gordon, August 2010

Depending on what actually happened to lead him to decommit, it might be pretty understandable. If he really did witness a fight in the locker room and it turned him off, I can't say I'd blame him. That would have been a sign of a program in trouble.
