Hlas: Please, people, stop using "B1G".

Back to the original post, Hlas had his tongue in his cheek as he wrote that. Sarcasm is a difficult thing for some.

Not meaning to call any individual stupid.
The idea of splitting geographically is/was stupid.

You do that & the "west" would have ALWAYS been perceived to be the weaker division. ALWAYS, no matter what. True or not, it would have always been seen that way. That could not happen, Delany knew this, every university president knew this.

Once competitive balance was identified as the top priority, there were 2 options, contrary to what most people believe. Those two options consisted of 1)what we have today & 2)the other was Iowa & Wisconsin switching divisions.

I get that people think its easy, its simple, it makes sense on many levels, etc...but its a shortsighted, poor business decision. Its as simple as that.

I don't agree with their thinking but this seems in line with everything that I've read too. I think it really started with the whole idea that they needed to keep Ohio State and Michigan in separate divisions. I think the west would have held its own in competetive balance with Nebraska, Wisconsin and Iowa. Keeping the border rivalries in tact to me outweighs anything they sought to accomplish in this arrangement.

I somewhat agree. In reality, UNL, Wisc & Iowa would hold their own, but the perception wouldn't represent that.
The question is/was what is best for the conference as a whole. What positions the league for success, financially & competitively.

Michigan & OSU have to play, I think we all agree on that.
If they're put in the same division, that means that the two most storied programs in the conference will NEVER play for the conference title. That's not what's best for the B1G.
For that reason alone, placing both programs in the same division wasn't an option.

The other thing to keep in mind here is that I guarantee that Nebraska wanted one of OS/Mich/PSU with them.

Iowa lost Wisconsin, which we're all sorry to see, but the reality is that is going to be very short lived. Nine game conference schedules are coming very soon & Wisconsin & Iowa will once again play each season & everyone is happy.

As much as I want to play Wisconsin every year, they got the divisions right.
They kept almost all rivalries, the "brand" programs are split equally, TV revenues can best be maximized. They did what was best for the conference as a whole.

Nebby, Iowa, Illinois, Purdue, Indy, PSU - Heartland
MSU, UM, OSU, NW, Wisky, Minny -Lakes

Iowa-Minny protected rivalry.

I don't give a damn if the West would have been PERCEIVED to be weak. At least it wouldn't be like the Big 12, where the North WAS weak. If the division can hold its own, it will gain respect. If it couldn't, it wouldn't (like the B12 North).

the B1G ten is just trying to appeal to new demographics...

I can't tell you which division Kentucky, Vandy, Alabama or Auburn are in without looking at a map. How's looking up the B1G divisions any different?
I know they're in the SEC, so who cares.

Which division is Oregon, Ore St, Cal, Wash, Wash St, Stanford in.
I couldn't tell ya.
And I don't care, its not my conference.

In other news, Trey Chase doesn't understand basic national geography, and has no trouble sharing it with everyone.

Here's a hint genius, the teams in the SEC East are from the states that are furthest east, and the teams in the PAC12 south are from the states further south.

DEEEEERRRRRRRP.

The conference isn't called B1GG1E.

just hink of the possibilities if it were...

nothing spells ratings like an east coast west coast rap battle. and with how impressive the b1g ten's marketing department has been as of late... cough legends/leaders/heroes cough... I think this might be right up their alley

You have to live in SEC country to really get the full flavor of it. People around here consider the Big Ten garbage. And yes, many people here have no concept of the Big Ten Network. I called Cox Cable here when I still had cable and asked about adding the BTN and the rep had never heard of it and knew nothing about it. Guys I work with maybe have heard that the Big Ten has a networrk but couldn't even tell you if they have it in their tv package. The Big Ten basically doesn't exsist in people's minds down here. Think before you write things you don't know anything about.

I find this hard to believe, but if its really true, it shows why the South leads the country in illiteracy, obesity, smoking, and lowest expected life span.

If at any point in my life I care even a little bit about the logo or names of the divisions I am going to go ahead and kick my own ***. It has zero meaning whatsoever in how the game is played.

I will probably live in Pesnacola until the day I die so guess I feel the need to respond to this. People just have a sense of tribalism in this part of the country when it comes to college football. I made the switch to U-verse but I would guess Cox to this day still doesn't carry the BTN even though they have become a BTN affiliate. We do have lousy schools and a visible redneck element but I have learned as a Midwesterner living here that people in the North have stereotypes that don't fit the reality of living in the South. You just have to live here to appreciate that and the over the top craziness of SEC college football fans.

I like it. It instantly becomes nationally branded. Hlas may not have the capacity to understand what the B1G is trying to accomplish here. It's all about marketing & I'm not going to question the practices the B1G has been doing because it seems they have been calling all the right shots since starting The B1G 10 network.

B1G B1G B1G B1G

I love it. It's like asking texters not to use lol or jk or idk, etc. It's already ingrained into our culture and there is no stopping it now.

Take a bit of caution with your blanket statements about "the South", pls. I can state conclusively that none of this applies in North Carolina, and even Atlanta metro. NC is definitely ACC/SEC country, but B1G is very well represented (alums/transplants) and is not considered "garbage" in this region.
I get that the FL panhandle is provincial and rather uncivilized, though. I'm glad you enjoy it, Mark; I wouldn't live there if you paid me seven figures.
