Hawkeyes Offer DJ Carton

Nah... I'm gonna stick with knocking it out of the park with recruiting and player development. If you wanna argue that he's hit a double off the green monster overall, I'm good with that. But recruiting, identifying talent and then developing it, he's killing it. Hitting it of the park might not be a good enough analogy. Give me another school that's had 4 straight years with a 1st team All B1G selection with Marble, White, Uthoff and Jok?

Except when it comes to recruiting PG's...

I get that Carton was a Sophomore this year, but I went to the Bettendorf/Muscatine game to see Wieskamp play and Carton did nothing to stand out. Neither team was very good (especially Muscatine) but I'm surprised to hear there was more than one D1 player on the court that night. Granted, it was just one game and he was was a Sophomore.

yeah, he recruited a Parade All American who started every game for 4 seasons, led the team to 3 NCAA appearances and is the schools all time assist leader and then chased that with last seasons All B1G Frosh PG. Such a horrible track record.

It's about time Mike gets some credit but it's easy to see the point guard position has been his weakest recruiting area.

When his 3rd highest rated recruit was a point guard, it's hard to say it is his weakest recruiting position. I would say shooting guard is his weakest recruiting position.

I can agree that PG has been his weakest, but it's not like he's completely whiffed either like everyone wants you to believe. Just because someone creates a narrative doesn't always mean it's true. Iowa has had pretty solid PG play since Fran has got here but in the same breath I can say that it's his weakest position and agree with that.

Fran has recruited two first team all conference shooting guards. His best point guard was honorable mention all conference.

yeah.... maybe is C? He's had 2 Forwards that were great, 2 SG's that were great and IMO... we haven't had a really solid outstanding 5 since he's got here. Olseni I guess? We've been solid there, but not outstanding like SG and Forward. So I would say C and PG have been his weakest spot. BUT, I would follow that up with Bohannon and hopefully Garza being the break through's

The C position is starting to fade away more and more each year. Fran has had 4 all conference players, two of them were SG's, Uthoff I would say was a SF and Aaron was a PF.

I agree with the C position - I was just stating, as far as recruiting, it might be his worst which makes sense with the way college hoops has gone

Yes, Gesell was a prized recruit, who didn't get much better. His PPG and FG% went down from his Freshman season to his Senior year. Bohannon looks like a steal, but lets not kid ourselves, he was offered after Fran struck out on all his top priorities at PG before even offering him. Fran has brought in a lot of talent, but rarely has that been at the PG position and he still hasn't brought in a solid PG that can break guys down off the dribble, facilitate, and guard on the other end.

He's brought in back to back "solid" PG's... and if a recruit is a fall back or his first choice, who cares, it's who he got and how we can judge him. He hasn't brought in an All-American PG, I'll agree with that.

In regards to Carton. I watched a couple recent videos. He'a a lefty and goes left almost 90% of the time. Even when he goes right he usually comes back to his left hand. His shot realease is a little low and he will have to improve there along with developing his right hand. He certainly has the explosiveness though.

Come on man, the PG position has been the weakest recruited position during the Fran era thus far. MG and Sapp was one of the worst back courts in the BIG, they just benefitted from playing with White, Uthoff, and Jok.
I really like Bohannon and he's exceeded everyone's expectations but he can't guard anyone and his backup is Christian Williams or Brandy Ellingson... Moss has potential to be a solid 2 but our weakness is once again the 1-2 and our strengths are 3-5.

247 has him 100% Wisky. It might be an uphill climb for us.
Of course he's a Wisky lean. Was it a month ago that they offered? Iowa JUST offered and it hasn't had a chance to sink in yet.

I believe it will come down to this season. If the Hawks do well and finish ahead of the Badgers, we'll have a chance at landing Carton. If Iowa falls flat on their face, no chance.

Just my 2¢ .. .. GO HAWKS!!!

lol - Fran just had Jok at the 2 - one of the best shooters and scorers in school history - so, the whole ONCE again thing haha and he had Marble Jr before that who was drafted and still bouncing around the NBA. I've already said on about 4 other posts that I think PG is our weakest recruited position along with the 5....but at the same time, we've had back to back pretty solid PG's ... with Mike G (who i agree never really lived up to his star rating, but still, started pretty much every game for 4 seasons and became the schools all time assist leader and led a team to 3 straight NCAA appearances (look that up, it's not common at Iowa) ... and now we have an absolute gamer at PG who can probably shatter every record Iowa has for a PG...so maybe it's getting better?

Moss started at the 2 (Sapp before him), Jok started at the 3... and I was referring to the MG/Sapp years and this upcoming year anyway.
MG didn't 'lead' Iowa to the tourney 3 straight years, in fact he was never better than the 4th or 5th best player on the team.
Love what I saw out of Bohannon this year, but he certainly has him limitations, namely defensively, and we only got him because he had no P5 offers and Fran struck out on every high caliber PG he recruited.

You must have a pretty good inside source to know your last sentence is true. Us guys without an inside source think it's possible Bohannon got too good to pass up no matter what and maybe we don't have Dailey right now if another point guard recruit would have committed.

His weakest recruiting position depends on your definition. I would have gone with center if my definition allowed me to use hindsight of how their careers turned out, but I consider that more player development than recruiting. Fran landed a top 50 recruit at center so I consider that great recruiting. I don't consider convincing a legacy kid to stay after a coaching change, or beating out Drake for a kid great recruiting. Both were great wins by Fran, but it wasn't great recruiting. I also don't consider Uthoff in the category of great recruiting. He falls in the category of a great coach that is building a great program doing enough on the court to bring home an Iowa kid.

His great recruiting jobs were White (for finding a kid that was already really good but over looked), Gesell, Woody and Cook. I think the two freshmen this year fall into that category too but we will have to wait and see. Weiscamp falls into the great recruiting category too.

Bohannon was literally the definition of a fallback recruit.

Iowa did strike out on some other PGs that class... JBo was a fall back recruit. He's the very definition of one. I'm not saying that in a derogatory way. I couldn't be happier how things have played out. Thankfully Wisky had another PG that they liked instead because if they'd have offered JBo prior to Iowa settling on him that too may have ended with us on the outside lookin in...
As far as Dailey goes I don't see how he matters a whole lot. I'll be surprised if he factors in a whole lot... He'll have to get bigger/stronger and better if he's going to take any mins away from Moss or Ellingson or Baer. He's long but he might never get big enough to play mins at the 3. Perhaps his JR or SR year he'll factor in we'll just have to see
