Harty nails the trophy discussion.

Yea. They should have Nile Kinnick on one side & Jack Trice on the other side of a bushal of corn & shucking the corn in uni with their football helmets sitting in front of them & a football between. At least that would be better than the monstrosity they put out there & Iowa Corn could be represented.

Not to take anything away from Harty, but this has been the sentiment of most people and Iowa media. I know Morehouse was on the radio Sat night saying the same thing (as far as Kinnick-Trice statue).

nice write-up. i like the idea of them standing in front of a field of corn or something

That would be cool. Kind of just coming out of the cornfield together & immediately onto an adjacent f-ball field, a la "Field of Dreams" with helmets tucked under their arms.

Why do they have to be in a field of corn?
Maybe we could have them next to a barn or next to a cow/pig.... then that will certainly cut down on the Iowa stereotype.

its sponsored by iowa corn. i'm assuming they will want something that has to do with corn represented on there.

i was trying to work with ideas that fulfilled corporate sponsorship needs along with something that actually has to do with football

First I am unsure the game deserves to have a traveling trophy. When you try to manufacture a rivalry outside of a conference it is a dubious idea. I can think of no Big Ten University that has a trophy game with an out of conference opponent. I'm unsure any Big XII team has one outside of conference.

I, err We, can hope that sensible heads reconsider this design.

Why exactly does corn have to be part of the trophy? Why can't it just say Iowa Corn on the base, in huge engraved letters? Trice and Kinnick should be the only part of the actual trophy.

sure, it could. again, i'd prefer it not have corn on it at all or maybe a small cob or something. i was just going off the assumption iowa corn would want corn on the trophy since they made corn the main part of the hideous trophy.

i like the engraved logo on the base idea

That is the problem..."its sponsored by iowa corn. i'm assuming they will want something that has to do with corn represented on there."

Once corporate sponsors got involved this game is ALL ABOUT IOWA CORN NOW, not the two universities or the football game.

Maybe they could design a new trophy of pouring corn syrup into a bottle, put the label Coke on the bottle, so that Coke can get into the action.

I would like to see Iowa Corn take their trophy and just disappear into the woodwork from whence they came.

The corn part doesn't bother me. The trophy could be a bronze bushel basket of corn if they want. The hokiness of the wimpy figurine scene is the part that bothers me. I don't necessarily think it needs to be overtly football themed, but it can't be what it is.

They sponsor the game, why should they have the right to the trophy? The old sponsor was Hy-Vee, they didn't have a damn shopping cart on the trophy.

Bingo. The trophy is for the winner of a football game...not a yield contest. It's about football. Period.

Geez, those Gophers were a bunch of racist bastards back in the 20-30's,clearly,with the Trice incident and the Floyd incident.

I do not get too caught up in trophies,as I just want to win the game, but I wish they would go back to the drawing board and incorporate some football/Iowa/ISU history into the corn theme.

The Megaphone Trophy goes to the winner of Michigan State and Notre Dame. The Shillelagh Trophy (not to be confused with the Jeweled Shillelagh, which is also a ND trophy) goes to the winner of Purdue and Notre Dame.

Try to "manufacture" a rivalry? Iowa and Iowa State IS a rivalry. Has been since before I was born. Same way that FSU/Miami is a rivalry - even before they were part of the same conference. And it doesn't really matter if you have a trophy - a rivalry is a rivalry. Trophy or no trophy.

But I agree, if they have any sense, they will listen to the fans and redesign the trophy. Even if it's too late to do it for this season, you can change it for the following year.

Well said. I don't care that much about the trophy - it's the game I'm focused on. But if you're going to have a trophy, let's have something that the fans don't absolutely despise. Something related to Iowa/ISU football is what needs to happen. Doesn't mean you can't still work a corn theme into it somehow.

I've said this before - ditch the corn!

Traveling trophies are meant to be timeless - sponsors change.

Should the trophy be redesigned whenever the sponsor changes as to reflect the agenda/interests of the new sponsor? NO.
