Grim Outlook for Iowa Football 2013?

I think Jon, has been clear about his doubts on the Iowa program. But it is possible he just thinks KF deserves a chance to turn things back around, or how about maybe he thinks Iowa would have a hard time finding someone better. That is a position I agree with. Its easy for everyone to think we can be Alabama or OSU but guys that just in your dreams. I think KF will bring us back to 8 wins and a bowl game next year. OK Im ready. Everyone go crazy on me.

It might surprise everyone, that based on ferentz' record as a whole, I think he should get a chance to turn it around as well. I think it's foolish to think it'll happen, of course.

I don't think Iowa will ever be elite whatsoever.

Could ferentz win 8 games again while at Iowa? Yeah!!!! I happen to believe that's improbable to happen after eveluating him for 13-14 years.

This is how I feel too, Iowa won't be ELITE. Because to me ELITE is overall tradition of winning at a high level.

Schools like Michigan, OSU, Alabama, USC. To me those schools are elite. Yes, they all have had down years in the past 10 years or so but still they are excellent programs. Iowa isn't at that level, can they beat them some years, sure why not!

Do I think Ferentz WILL turn it around, no, I don't. Would I be ecstatic if he did, sure! Because that means Iowa is doing well.

To assume just because of what he did in '02-'04 and '08-'10 to assume he will for sure do it again seems like huge leap. Iowa will always have ups and downs but I feel going forward from now that the ups won't be as high as they were in the past and the downs will be lower than they were in the past.

When there are little to no expectations, Kirk tends to shine. Maybe we'll be much better than expected.

There's a part of me feeling this way as well, but I am learning to be more guarded as to not let my hopes get the best of me.

I think we are in store for another sub .500 season. What I think may make it worse is the conference as a whole is going to be much stronger than in 2012 so that even if Iowa is improving, it may not look like it.

You may be right, If he cant he wont be around to long. I just think he will. He is to well respected in the coaching community for me to think he cant. There are a lot of people who know a lot more than me who respect the guy. IDK I have been known to drink a lot of Kool Aid

I agree with this, however if Iowa is improving you won't be able to tell just looking at the record. But you will be able to see it on the field. I think the offense will be a lot better with the o-line injuries getting healed up and returning Andrew Donnal and Brandon Scherff. The QB position should be better, not that I think Vandy was a bad QB, just last season on this system he wasn't able to perform at all. I think the numbers will get better offensively, but how much better is the question.

Dude, the conference isn't improving. There was not a single good QB in the conference last year. The first round of the draft will have maybe 2 or 3 Big Ten guys. A bunch of teams are trying to go to some spread basketball on grass crap and it is getting away from the strengths of the Big Ten and it is precisely why Wisconsin can roll out an old school punch you in the mouth offense and still get to three straight Rose Bowls (with help from probations). Did you not see the expert picks above? They had freaking Northwestern second. Northwestern is getting better than they were, but I'm sorry, if Northwestern is picked second, the conference sucks. Hard.

I think the big question is how much better can the D get. That is what will carry a KF coached team. The guy has to have a good D for his system to work. He has to be able to win close games. Doing something about clock managment would be a area the offense could take a big step forward in close games.

I defy you to look at Iowa's schedule next year and point out 8 wins. Do it! Do it now!

U just mad cuz if NU keeps improving your season tix at Ryan Field are going to go up in price.

Ha ha ha. They had a freaking 10 win team that narrowly lost to Michigan and Nebraska and still prolly only had about 28k fans show up. No way those things go up in price. Well, maybe if NU won 5 Rose Bowls in a row and the Bears went on a 10 year streak of 0-160 they would have some more fans, but that's about the only way. Jim Philips is not GarBar, brah.

I dont claim to be smart enough to know who on Iowa will improve and how much. Who on other teams we play will do the same. I dont know which incoming Fr. will be impact players next year on Iowa or the teams we play. I do think the two new corridnaters will have their systems improved next year. Im sure you probley know those awnsers. but I dont. I just belive in what I told you. Why dont we wait until we play the games before we conceed the season

Let me reiterate, we had a QB who threw SEVEN TD PASSES this year. I don't have the record book in front of me, but that has got to be close to a low for a decent team in the past 30 years running a pro style or west coast type offense (may be some option guys who had lower numbers). Unless the next guy is literally the worst QB Iowa has had bince the beginning of the Hayden era, 6 wins minimum next year. Plus, the defense will be better.

Let me reiterate, where is all this talent you seem to think we have sitting on our bench? But JVB gave us the best chance to win, what does that tell you? Plus, Greg Davis is still calling plays.

Look, guy, sometimes kids aren't ready to come in. Stanzi in 2007 was a good example. We saw a trainwreck at QB and we had to deal with it. But things got a lot better in 2008. I'm not saying we have a Stanzi on the bench, but I guarantee you our QBs will combine for more than 7 TD passes next year. Hell, just one (or one more) TD pass in a few games would have been the difference between 4 wins and 7 or 8 wins.

Don't bring up that guy ever again. I just don't want to talk about him anymore. You know my thoughts.

WTF is a five o clock Charlie?

Remember MASH?

Reality is reality...but for the five o'clock charlie's who want to bring up some new negative bit of minutia or just digging for more negatives each and ever day (repetitive negative posting), that gets old.

We are all aware that things are not rosy...analyzing some of them and discussing them is not a bad thing...but the going out of your way to find the negatives all the time, that's worn out.

So your negativity, is a higher grade of negativity as long as you don't mention the how and why the program has been morphing into sub-mediority for several years and who is responsible?

I'm surprised several people didn't call Jon a Troll

interesting hypothesis you present here. jon has always come across as a glass half full kind of guy...generally posts positive articles on his personally created site "hawkeyenation.com". perhaps this whole website is jon's way of trolling hawkeye fans and he's slowly been laying the groundwork for his massive trolling spree that's about to commence.

well played jon

There are some people who worry when he starts talking about weeding out the Dirty 30.
