Grim Outlook for Iowa Football 2013?

When there are little to no expectations, Kirk tends to shine. Maybe we'll be much better than expected.

Given this was true in earlier part of his career as the HC at Iowa but since when has this been true? After the '08 "maybe" since Bulaga and Greene went to the NFL and didn't come back for their senior seasons but they were still picked by many to be a 8+ win team.

Here is why Rittenberg and that other guy picked Iowa second to last for the 2013 season..........

1. Few really good players returning

2. Not much for depth

3. A bad coach for the past 3 years

Don't know how I can argue with them.

Freed Rittenberg and Bennett really follow Iowa football about as much as skimming articles from other writers like Jon and the guys from HawkCentral and The Gazette.

As I agree with #1 and #3 but the depth Iowa has depth just not good depth. Remember you have to specify which type of depth we are talking about.

Jon, so will you be asked to write a "fluff" piece on the program or you be threatened to not have your press pass renewed for next season?

I've already been asked to write fluff pieces, all winter. It's why Kirk pays me $3k per month on the side.

Not.

That's not how it works, and these sorts of queries are just ignorant.

But...........but.............but.......I don't wanna be ignorant. Will you help me?

Sure, I can help. Stop assuming that someone is on the take or has an ulterior motive if they have a different opinion than you have. It's the height of arrogance.

Look, JD, outside of picking OSU every year which is the safe pick 90% of the time, the "experts" are pretty much always wrong. Northwestern number 2? Please. They are losing several key linemen. The bulk of their skill guys are back, but when Jaleel (along with half of the Big Ten) sets up shop in their backfield next year, good luck getting anything going. The "experts" simply do not understand the importance of line play. Iowa will be better in the trenches next year than it was at the end of this year and it will be a heckuva lot better than most of the rest of the Big Ten. If we set a lofty expectation of a QB who can just throw say 12 touchdowns next year (a tall order for a Greg Davis run offense, I know) at the right times, we should hit 6 or 7 wins again and save for a few embarrasssments against the big boys, we will have a respectable squad and season. It ain't exactly rocket surgery here, we were basically two o-linemen going down away from being at least 6-6 in 2012 and we beat a BCS team. Save the misery for some other time because it's a new year and we need to look ahead.

I really think this defense with 8 returning starters is going to be back to being more of a traditional Iowa defensive quality. The best news on both sides of the ball is the lines should be stronger, and that includes a couple of big redshirt freshmen defensive lineman. Iowa lost two games badly...PSU and UM. The others were winnable and I think Iowa would have made a bowl game had it not been for losing both Schreff and Donnal. A huge blow when your go to side of the field is taken away with the offense already really struggling. Obviously, a huge unknown variable at QB, and will the new offense now make a smoother transition. I do think this is a team that will be able to run the ball with a bigger, stronger, more experienced OL, and what should be a decent and deep set of backs. Traditionally, the strength of the team has been along the lines...those will be better next year. This isn't a 11-2 team but nor is it 4-8. I see us back in a bowl, and more likely finishing 6-7 in the conference than 11th...BTW-Look for PSU's magic to end this year.

Yeah, QB is an unknown, but with 7 TD passes this past year, that is the position with the most upside potential.

Thanks for posting Jon. As I've said before, best case next year would be 5-7. I honestly look for Iowa to be a 3 win team next year.

Well I appreciate being called ignorant, it makes me feel special considering I am not in the media so I don't know how it works.

Let me reiterate, we had a QB who threw SEVEN TD PASSES this year. I don't have the record book in front of me, but that has got to be close to a low for a decent team in the past 30 years running a pro style or west coast type offense (may be some option guys who had lower numbers). Unless the next guy is literally the worst QB Iowa has had bince the beginning of the Hayden era, 6 wins minimum next year. Plus, the defense will be better.

LOL.............Jon, hope you know I love everything you do with all things concering the hawks. Never have thought you were on the take.

But, I would think that there are folks in Iowa City that you can't tick off by being totally honest or you risk losing good contacts. Of course I could be wrong. I totally doubt you would come on here and say it's time for ferentz to go.

I did hear you on the radio say it's time for Lick to go, but I'd think that you had inside info that the decision had been made.

Again, I realize could be totally wrong on all of my above points. If I am, tell me and I'll retract every thought I have in regard to what I typed.

I think Jon, has been clear about his doubts on the Iowa program. But it is possible he just thinks KF deserves a chance to turn things back around, or how about maybe he thinks Iowa would have a hard time finding someone better. That is a position I agree with. Its easy for everyone to think we can be Alabama or OSU but guys that just in your dreams. I think KF will bring us back to 8 wins and a bowl game next year. OK Im ready. Everyone go crazy on me.

still feeling this thread will be good now that you're upset about jon's comments?

Yes, I am butthurt, EXTREMELY BUTTHURT.

I honestly think many people on this site can't take a joke or talk down to people because no one takes them seriously in their "real" life.

As for Jon, this is his site and I know he gets bombarded with stupid questions, posts, PM's, emails and etc... over and over again. I was just having a little fun with him and he called my comment ignorant.

It was ignorant because I am not in the media, I don't know how it really works, this is the definition of ignorant.

Ignorant: Lacking knowledge, information, or awareness about something in particular.

I guess since I am ignorant so I should be butthurt, right?
