Grade Brian's Gameplan

this was back to fighting everything in a phone booth. KF thought he'd be able to run Wadley and it was LARGELY unsuccessful and with 9 crowding the line KF would have us all believe it is just poor execution. Don't know who's call it was on that safety but that was shear stupidity.
We know it was either Kirk, Brian, or Kenny. What year is it? #deja vu

Hated to see Wadley up the middle time after time.....after time.
A WR bubble-screen on 3rd and long would've been nice to see. Play-action or Stanley on a high percentage roll-out on 2nd and long would have been encouraging, but neither one happened.
The 1st three games I give him an A-
Last night vs PSU he gets a D for making our D stay on the field so much.

I think any coach who is worth his salt would accept a poor grade after a loss. We knew this team would be a work in progress, and we found out it might be A LOT better than we thought preseason. So...even playing against a fired up D, playing to be in the game at the end, I'd consider a respectable C, C+. C+ because after getting manhandled, not a coaching issue it was an athlete issue (possibly scheme/scouting/tendency issue a little), we found a way to move the ball when needed or score when the opportunity was there. The defense did its job in a lot of areas but it bent a lot, forced punts in Iowa territory, which left the offense in very poor field position most of the game. We played the game to not make mistakes, conservative. The only bad call was the safety. Bad call. Bad. Bad. Bad. They were already getting penetration from the perimeter, now with less grass to cover. The three TDS were all good plays. You saw the tide switching, offense possibly wearing PSU down. We were in the game until the last play. Im not sure what fantasy anyone here had about beating a superior team by 10+ points...so being ahead with under 2 minutes to play isnt less than a C.

Ive coached at the varsity level in high school football, a very good 1A program. And before anyone starts, lol, i wasnt Vince Lombardi or even Coach Hayden Fox lol. What i can say, is in the heat of the battle, when you are playing against a team that is clearly more physical, faster, more athletic...all of your gadget plays, screens, reverses, etc...they dont matter if the team across from you is as aggressive as PSU was Friday night. When you cant beat them deep, they are going to play you one one one across the board and bring the heat. Thete isnt a whole lot that you can do but run your best plays and limit mistakes. Your best plays are the plays that identify you as your program. Ill say our pass game is markedly better than last year, but we still lack game changing speed. What i do see is Smith-Marsette and Fant as targets that you occasionally throw jump balls to...and i mean legitimate on an island throw it short and go up and get it kind of balls.

I think the only shot we had earlier Saturday night was to go 4 wide, possibly with one TE in the slot and one back in the slot opposite and work the run game with one back and space. That could open up some room, call off a few blitzes either by taking an extra defender out of the box or using motion and running shallow crossing routes to keep them honest.

Bottom line, i feel Brian and the entire staff, brought an over matched and hard working bunch to the brink of victory. I was VERY proud and happy with the effort, disappointed by the result, but glad we are on the RISE! From preseason to now, wow, very pleased in where we are at as a team. Would have given my, and a lot of your right legs, for a Hawkeye win though, maybe two legs from some of you lol

When i actually believe its his gameplan ill grade it... as long as I see the audible run to the short side of the field I always smell kirk kirk kirk.
Cap is boss.Like with Gd he sits in offensive meetings.Kok my opinion does part also.CAP has final Say.CAP is same.Does not care for change or risk ect. This is us via CAP!

I think the game plan went out the window with Iowa's poor field position. From that point on it was trying to get a few yards and a first down. And once a play is called it has to be executed properly. A nervous QB didn't help Iowa's cause. Give Penn State defense credit. They played hard. And from that prospective I would give Brian a C.

Valid points. But zero creativity at that situation.Cap went to BUNKER mentality.Just my opinion. On to Msu.Tough game yes#

The gameplan wasn't the problem.

Dropped passes, bad field position, and poor adjustments were the problem.

They were limited by the speed of PSU's defense and their execution on offense. Iowa was never able to get a running game established. So the 8 man box held. Iowa never could get a passing game going, because of bad passes, drops. So PSU's defense never had to respect the pass. Iowa spent most of the game inside their 20 yard line. Tough to be creative in that situation.

Agree but still. You are correct still but gut feeling ZERO thought to be flexible or consider outside box.my thoughts confusing yes but am clear CAP ultra conserative.

I'd give it a C. Sometimes it was incredible, some times it was atrocious.

The draw/trap to Wadley for the last TD, and the swing pass to Wadley for the long TD? Awesome.

The pitch to Wadley resulting in the safety? Awful.

We weren't playing Wyoming, ISU or UNT, we were playing the 4th-ranked team, an actual B1G foe and a team acknowledged to be as talented as any of theirs in recent years.

Completely agree on the Wadley TD run. PSU gave it to them and Iowa took it. That is a huge change for this program.

We have to temper BOTH negativity AND enthusiasm.

Tempering negativity: many on the offense are still young; OL guys have already been moved around a bit; and assuming guys learn at normal rate, things will get better.

Tempering enthusiasm: many teams have no "scouting" on guys like Stanley, ISM, IKM and T Young, so some of this is "beginner's luck";; we don't seem to be willing to get more guys involved (where oh where are D Young, Falconer, et. al?); the young guys are still learning, so execution will be lacking across the board, not just against "better" teams (i.e., we could still lose to Minny/Purdue/Illinois/Nebraska/MSU as a matter of course, not a matter of "fluke")

The very worst part: this season is already 1/3 complete!

Still not hard to defend Iowa, short side of the field is where its going. Doesn't take a defensive genius to flow that way. Penn's corners jumped to cover the run on several plays even with safeties up and free receivers running down field during the game. That's the part that confuses me as why we can't exploit that when we're all seeing it. We're just to damn bullheaded to exert our will hoping for the home run.

D+. Would be a straight up F if not for the offense moving the ball at the end there. Talk about being stubborn and vanilla through the first 3 quarters. Geesh.

"Let's keep establishing the run against these 8 and 9 man boxes! We can do it, guys!"

Haha you probably actually believe this!

Everyone else was smart enough to figure out what I was doing.......well except you that is.

You got a big game Thursday vs Texas. Will the Clown fans show up and stay for the game? I was talking to a Clone fan today and he said that he will be leaving at halftime, it being a school night and all.
