Ive coached at the varsity level in high school football, a very good 1A program. And before anyone starts, lol, i wasnt Vince Lombardi or even Coach Hayden Fox lol. What i can say, is in the heat of the battle, when you are playing against a team that is clearly more physical, faster, more athletic...all of your gadget plays, screens, reverses, etc...they dont matter if the team across from you is as aggressive as PSU was Friday night. When you cant beat them deep, they are going to play you one one one across the board and bring the heat. Thete isnt a whole lot that you can do but run your best plays and limit mistakes. Your best plays are the plays that identify you as your program. Ill say our pass game is markedly better than last year, but we still lack game changing speed. What i do see is Smith-Marsette and Fant as targets that you occasionally throw jump balls to...and i mean legitimate on an island throw it short and go up and get it kind of balls.
I think the only shot we had earlier Saturday night was to go 4 wide, possibly with one TE in the slot and one back in the slot opposite and work the run game with one back and space. That could open up some room, call off a few blitzes either by taking an extra defender out of the box or using motion and running shallow crossing routes to keep them honest.
Bottom line, i feel Brian and the entire staff, brought an over matched and hard working bunch to the brink of victory. I was VERY proud and happy with the effort, disappointed by the result, but glad we are on the RISE! From preseason to now, wow, very pleased in where we are at as a team. Would have given my, and a lot of your right legs, for a Hawkeye win though, maybe two legs from some of you lol
