Got Floyd....but D what the heck was that??

Needed to blitz the hell out of Leidner. Hell Iowa was giving up big plays anyway. When they did blitz, which wasn't much, he wasn't even close to accurate and a few should've been picked.

I said this all week long once each day, blitz that overgrown fullback and he makes mistakes. Look at his game vs NW he played like a turd all game long.

You can say we should be happy with a W and 10-0, fair enough. We had some outstanding O performances (didn't need Wadley and 40 points). CJ is truly the leader and gamer we've been missing. But we will never get out of Lincoln with that kind of D and lack of adjustment with a win. Making that QB look that great and marching on us 3x that i can think of should be embarrassing. We will not get out of Lincoln with missed field goal attempts either. Great day, proud of the record, but that was concerning to say the least knowing the competition we could potentially face down the road.

Looked like the missed FG was good to me but whatever.

2nd Minny TD was on a blown assignment, 4th was cause the D got sucked into a trick play, 5th was because we went into prevent defense (which only prevents you from winning or putting a game away). Kirk and Phil will use the film to get the D back on track. They'd better anyway or we won't have many more wins this season.

We DID force some pressure (one drew a grounding call, the other, unfortunately, drew a personal foul on us).

To their credit, Minnesota adjusted. And they ran gimmick plays. And we better expect a lot of that the next couple weeks, because desperate teams do desperate sh!t on a regular basis versus being able to execute well in their base packages.

They have some good players. Leidner has gotten much better as a passer, and Brooks is a tough RB. Losing Maxx Williams and Cobb to graduation hurt, and injuries have taken their toll.

Bottom line, we beat a tough team and are still undefeated. Staff and team will be doing lots of "film" the next two weeks.

Kitchen sink game for Minny. New HC who has the job no matter what so a loss doesn't really matter, playing with house money. They basically threw out their playbook and did every gadget play they had at us. I highly doubt Nebraska does this. Their HC is trying to build a program so they will play it straight and try to get better. Purdue could try anything and it won't matter.

Some people say there is no "new kirk" and that people are just happy because we are winning. That theory doesn't work because we won that game and that was old kirk. We are slowly getting closer and closer to the game day coaching that had most fans wanting Kirk gone. Yea we won, but we also could have won a lot of those games last year. The point is, you have to give your players the best chance to win. Old Kirk doesn't do that. The coaching staff didn't give our players the best chance to win and CJ won't be here forever. If he coaches the rest of the games like this, I'm going to hope for the best this year, and hope he rides off into the sunset after. 17 years of letting a qb sit back and pick us apart when we have the players to stop him is enough for me.

Who are these elite blitzing LBs you feel we have? We play a 4-3, we recruit 4-3 linebackers. You don't blitz LBs in a 4-3, you rely on the front four to get pressure. We don't have the LBs to make blitzing worth the risk.

Yeah, I don't know what to think about the D. I know Indiana isn't bad, but two weeks in a row now. Am I wrong or had Coke fisher not been playing well?

I'm glad we're 10-0! I also hope the selection committee didn't watch the game. Guess I feel better due to the fact that #'s 6,7,9,and 10 all lost yesterday, 8 probably SHOULD have, and Indiana carved Michigan's vaunted D up like a filleted fish. Maybe the D wasn't on fire against them or yesterday but as someone pointed out this a.m., we did pretty much control the game start to finish. The D has carried us many a game this year. Perhaps shouldn't get too upset when the O has to pick them up. 10-0 sounds pretty good.Only 5 left that I'm aware of. :D

Raider package bro.

This post just makes no sense to me at all. I understand the D was off last night but Kirk has definitely changed. You don't like him, I get it but this post is kind of silly if you give yourself a minute to think before hitting submit.

Fisher was out of position all night. The first 2 TD's were on him.
Gotta think we have better talent on the bench.

There are a lot of good things about Kirk. I just can't stand how he ties his own hands by being so afraid to be aggressive. How can you watch the defense get burned both short, medium, and long the whole game but still be so afraid of the bad that being more aggressive might bring? It's just my opinion and I stand behind it.

Yes. This.

10-0 is great, no doubt, so am not complaining, but the defense yesterday did leave me concerned about the possibility of reaching 12-0/13-0 or better. Gotta tighten that up some. Either that, or keep the foot on the pedal offensively and outscore people.

I fully expected to give up some yards/points to Indiana, but expected a better performance yesterday against the goofs.

Just as long as the D looks good against Purdue next weekend, I'll feel better that some things have been corrected, but maybe this is one of those unusual years where Iowa has to lean more on their offense.

Yeah the defense was bad... but a lot of it was the playing calling on defense as well.

That was not the defense we have seen all year.

I don't know what it was, but if it happens again we are in big trouble. That last Gopher touchdown covered 75 yards in 45 SECONDS!! What the hell was that?! It looked like the linebackers were just sitting back waiting for a pass to be caught in front of them. And NO pass rush! Also, Mabin and Fleming got torched all night.

I'll take the win, but man, that defense was just god-awful

I felt that a) Minnesota threw the kitchen sink at us offensively. b) iowa was expecting k.j. maye to get some jet-sweeps at some point, which opened up the inside zone for the gophers. c) passing-wise, gophers were content to consistently take those 5-10 yard routes that iowa is willing to give up on the theory that most college quarterbacks cant do that consistently down the field. d) i was disappointed in the defensive adjustments, i felt like one thing they could have done was move mabin and king up to the line of scrimmage to take away those short passes and dare leidner to throw deep, but that never happened.

finally, in part i kinda thought it was just an atypical game overall. when was the last time an iowa-minnesota game had a combined 75 points, and nearly 1000 combined yards. to an extent it was just one of those games. usually the series has been low-scoring and hard-hitting by both teams. i have some concerns, but not overly so. given what happened to other teams, and what nearly happened to oklahoma state, i'm more than happy to survive and advance.

That last drive by Min looked like a Peyton 2 minute drill. Pass after pass right up the middle and no adjustment with the linebackers or DE's. Luckily the clock ran out.

Raider package, smaider package. Even with a Raider package, Iowa backs play off the ball. Even Minny's QB can make the throws to open receivers against Iowa's pass defense. Junk the super passive zone pass defense. All it does is allow an opponent's pass offense to score TDs against Iowa. Heck, it also forces Iowa's offense to the sidelines where the offense can't score more. Play more man to man. At least, mix it up to confuse some QBs. Zone in some situations and man-to-man in others. What I can't stand is a non-changing, mediocre Iowa pass defense. Don't count on QB sacks. They ain't coming. Get a new pass defense...a pass defense coordinator. Iowa needs it.

Iowa's run defense can't defend the edges. I think this is a indication of Iowa's lack of athleticism on defense. A run defense can't be successful if it only defends between the tackles. No one (not even Iowa) runs between the tackles for an entire game any more.

We held the edges much better in earlier games. What I saw last night was young LBs not staying home and getting sucked into play flows. It wasn't accidental, their OC called a terrific game.

Also it shows Iowa's defenders, when out of position against edge rushes, can't recover to make plays because of a lack of athleticism. The scheme they are coached to defend is a BETWEEN THE TACKLES DEFENSE. Mr. Iowa defensive coach, design more defenses for edge plays, please! But then again, Iowa would need more athleticism on defense to be able to cover the whole field including the edges.

Iowa's pass defense is, IMO, FUBAR.
