GET YOU SOME GUS JOHNSON RIGHT HERE

He's good at his job though. His job is to do what he can to keep people watching and he does that very well. When Indiana was down 14 he said something like "You can sense that Indiana is making a run here". Well, how? it had been a 14 point game pretty much all game. He's just selling the show.

Yeah, selling it to wives and girlfriends and others that don't really know what's going on.

You just proved it yourself, to anyone with a basketball IQ they can tell he's just spewing BS. That's not adding anything to the game, and a little insulting to educated fans.

He's a crappy play-by-play guy overall. He does have some high-profile and memorable moments from the closing of tourney games and some catch phrases, but overall he is not very good..

He also loses track of what's going on at the end of the game more than any other announcer I can think of. This is probably because he's so busy trying to think of what catch phrase to use next.

He used to be good though, his call at the end of the Xavier-Ohio St NCAA game was terrific.

I don't know. I see it a little differently. To me the play by play guy paints a picture (though is that really that important in a game that's on TV?)and more importantly he is supposed to make the game fun. He does that for me. It's the color guy who is supposed to be informative (though very few are).

Ok, but as stated above, screwing up facts, names, game situations...the forced schtick in 80% of the games that aren't down to the wire just doesn't make up for all that with me.

Agree completely with you about forced schtick...

and yet really over the years luv his calls....

he WAS LUCKY AND GOT TO CALL SOME GREAT GAMES!!!!!

I respect that some people like his style. But it is a little over the top for me...a little too in your face, a little too much fluff, and not quite enough subtle substance that allows the game to stand on its own.

In my opinion, no one has come close to the Vern Lundquist-Bill Raftery duo. If you like college basketball, that is the mountain top.

Tough to argue this.

He's fun to listen to. Anyone with a basketball IQ doesn't need an announcer to tell them what is going on in the game.

Dear BTN,
Thank you for bringing in Dan Bonner.
Him and Gus are a very solid #1 broadcasting team.

What's the story, I thought he was on CBS at one time? Too exciting for them?

It's not that I dislike Gus. I've become a bit of a Washington basketball fan after living in Seattle the last few years, and his call to end the Pac-10 tourney last year was awesome. (Isiah Thomas hit a shot at the buzzer to win the title, the third game of the Washington-Arizona series decided at the buzzer last season).

You couldn't have had three closer games between two opponents in a season, and Johnson's call was perfect...near hysterical, concluding with a "coooooold....blooded!"

That was a game worth being hysterical about. But it feels like Johnson is hysterical for every game. It cheapens the truly amazing moments.

And in general, I find Raftery's comments far more witty.

"Shoulder...shake...a little lingerie!"

If you really pay attention to Gus, he's not very good. If you need to be entertained by an announcer during a basketball game he is very good. To me, he's turning into the referee that tries to be the focal point of the game. There's a game going on that has my attention...I don't need theatrics. I did like him for a tournament setting. Everything is ramped up and it works

I do like Bonner.

Gus is very much like dolph. they have some high moments but overall trying to follow a game with them is very hard.to.do.
