Gesell

Gesell is beginning to hit shots again. There is one thing I would like to see him improve upon and his ppg would increase by at least 2. Stop taking the ball so deep when there are shot blockers watching and waiting. He gets too many blocked like that...stop and pop, he already has his man beat, pull up and kiss it off the glass for an easier shot.

Other than that, Gesell is right where I was hoping he would be this season and when Iowa has their cold spells, I would very much like to see him try and hit a midrange shot to break the spell. He can go where he wants against a lot of teams and it would be nice to see him get a little selfish on some of those drives instead of passing the ball.

Dakich mentioned against UM that McFran told him he wants MG to be more aggressive and take more of his shots. MG had been flat with his jumpshot most of this season and he seems to be coming out of that. We may be seeing the begining of a more aggressive MG. Hell, we starting to see a more aggressive Uthoff, White, Gabe and Basabe. Also, I think RDM is "deferring" the offense to others, by design, to allow the others to get going. When he does that, he generally scores 15 in a half. Many, this team is THIS CLOSE to starting to click on all cylinders. Think about what it would be like if RDM, MG, White, Basabe, JU had their offensive game in a groove come NCAA time? Hmmmmm.....

Edit: Crap, I forgot about Ogle3. See how deep this team is?

Is simply not being used as he could be. The kid bails us out over and over again and turns down shot after shot. He needs to be a go to go more then he is. He never ceases to amaze me!

I agree in that Mike is impressing the heck out of me. It's pretty exciting to know he's around for two more years and he's only scratching the surface of what he could be. IMO, he's probably going to wind up being Iowa's best point guard since Andre Woolridge.

Uthoff needs strength and aggression, maybe sent him to boot camp or something. Uthoff is too nice and soft, just like a marsh mellow. Okay who was thinking it...

He didn't play for two years..you'd think he would have been living in the weight room ;)

Wasn't he just a 1.50 coming out of HS?

If he was more, it didn't look like it in his recruiting vids...maybe when he redshirted at Wisconsin, he knew he was leaving and didn't want to be around his teammates?

I expected him to look skinnier after hearing he grew a little bit too, but he has made some tough shots in traffic this year and was trying to fight through contact today. On a lot of those, I don't know anyone on the Iowa roster that could finish though that contact.

There were a couple times today I thought Mike passed up open 3's... he needs to let it fly.

Next year I think we will see him shoot much more.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread! Very good overall analysis of MG's current game and his future. The only thing missing would be the three or four posters who acted like he was the second coming of Little Lick earlier this year. Where do these guys disappear to???

He's a sophomore. His time will come.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Fran seems to have put the game mantle on Dev this year. Next year I predict it will be on Mike. He's the one who'll run the team. Predict you see a much different Mike next year with the green light to do just about anything.

Do not feed the trolls...just wait until MG has an average game.

Yes. Mike's just so much more athletic than Horner and Oliver - his only competition in this department. I've always been an Oliver guy...and Mike certainly has more to work with than Dean did. They are fairly similar players, but I think Mike is slightly springier and makes quicker decisions than Dean did.

Nobody on this team needs to let threes indiscriminately fly, including Mike. Everyone on the team is being appropriately selective from three at this point in the season.

Mike seems to be in a groove with his confidence, but he's not a good enough shooter to sacrifice possessions by yacking threes. No one on our team is.

This team makes its money from within fifteen feet of the hoop. Those of us who are used to the Davis/Alford years when a 'hot' Iowa team meant 10 threes in a half need to adjust our expectations. When we yack it means that something is wrong and we're not executing.

Note that when PSU made a comeback MG wasn't in the game for the most part. I was wishing I ad a line to Fran to say, Hey MG is the only person on the team that can stay in front of anybody, so put him in. I like Fran, but sometimes he makes some pretty poor sub decisions.

Good thing Fran has no clue about his roster.
MG in the game or not, this game should not have been close imho.

Much more athletic than Horner yes, but not sure how much more athletic than Oliver he is, but I will take your word. As I watched the debacle unfold last season at Michigan, I kept wondering why Fran left MG in. It took about two possessions to figure it out, he plays hard and is a lot tougher than people give him credit for, he is a bulldog out there, just doesn't stop. Also, I walked away from that game being so impressed with his athleticism after seeing him in person. It was surprising because that was not one thing that had been discussed when analyzing him.
Mike is going to be one of the greats at Iowa when all is said and done; he has all the attributes and he has started running the fastbreak much better in conference season and his shot has found itself again.

Are you stoned? I'm giving a guy who's 4-5 from three land the green light if he gets a good look and I'm sure Fran is too. You are right, 15 feet from the goal today...at the freaking free throw line 41 times and made 30 or something like that. So against Michigan when Marble took 6-7 threes in the first half we weren't executing? The final play of the half against Michigan where Marble got the planned three wasn't executing? These guys are working to get the hot player more shots...there is no doubt about that...Fran runs plays for all them when we have the mismatch or are feeling it. If Gesell is stroking the three like today...I don't think anyone's going to get on him if he takes one...at least without forcing it. He turned a few down today that I think he should have taken.

Yeah the made the run without Mike in the game...I'm going to go down as also saying the fact that we missed 8-9 shots in a row as contributing also. Wait I'm solely going with the missed shots.

He said nobody should be chucking indiscriminately. He's not wrong. Gesell wasn't chucking out there today; he took five excellent shots and hit four of them. But he's probably not always going to get that many great looks; and when he's not, he's not good enough to justify chucking it anyway (neither is anyone on the team, for that matter, with the exception of Oglesby when he's hot).

Agreed...nobody should be chucking it indiscriminately...but Gesell passed up at least two open threes that he could have gotten off uncontested. Gesell was 4-5 from 3, I'd say that's pretty warm. I really think people are underestimating how good Gesell is going to be. I think he's got the entire package and you have to ride the hot hand. I'll bet if someone asks Fran in a press conference, he'll say he wants Mike taking those shots when he's open.

Glad Fran disagrees with you since he constantly says he wished Josh and Mike would shoot more.
