Gatens to NBA?

You guys are crazy. Not because of your opinions but how much of a tool most of you sound like. You'd think I posted this on the clown board with how bad I got attacked. Go back to your kozan threads.

Because its an absolutely ridiculous question.

You may as well have asked if it was possible for him to jump the grand canyon.

Like someone else said, if you have ever watched the NBA at any time, and if you have ever watched Matt Gatens, the answer is blatantly obvious

How many successful NBA guards are unable to create their own shot?
What I mean by create is: create their own 'space' to get open to shoot the jumper.
Unless Gatens is wide open or the team sets him screens, he's going nowhere.
Gatens cannot create space for his own shot. He's not a good one-on-one player.
He's Steve Alford-like.

Not really, as much as I hate Alford he was ten times the player in college.

There is a role for guys who are good at running off screens and shooting jumpers, Rip Hamilton, Ray Allen and Reggie Miller are examples.

Matt is simply an average shooter, he misses a ton of wide open shots.

There are and have been plenty of guards who don't create their own shot however they are at an elite level (thus they are in the NBA) at other things. There is nothing about Gatens game that is elite (except free throws but that alone won't get you anywhere).

Gatens has a good work ethic and has been a nice leader for Iowa. He'd be nothing more than a role player at schools that compete for the Sweet 16 year in and year out.

As far as the next level goes... I think Gatens would struggle to crack the starting 5 for the Iowa Energy. No joke.

Struggle? There is no chance, unless it was a gimmick to draw fans.

He would not be a starter in Europe.

I wouldn't count him out, but if Adam Haluska couldn't make it, I think Matt will have a hard time. Haluska much better off the dribble and a better outside shooter on his career.

Matt is a fairly good ball handler, better than Adam actually, he just can't get to the rim because he lacks quickness.

Haluska was far better at catching and shooting off screens. Matt rarely ever makes a shot coming off a screen he is decent on kick outs though.

Haluska was money coming off a screen.

I agree with this. Gatens is MAYBE the 6th best senior in the league right now. He has never been a difference maker at this level. No NBA team is going to waste the $10 it would take to buy a scout a ticket to watch him.

Switching gears just a bit, who thinks Gatens will earn 2nd team All Big 10 honors? I believe he will get it because a) he's had a very nice year, and b) he'll get some love as a senior, being a 4 year starter, and sticking w/ a downtrod program through some rough times

Not a bad feather in your cap considering the talent in the Big 10 this year

He will probably get the senior love deserved or not.

Gatens is playing as well this year as he's ever played at Iowa, and he gets major credit for sticking around for these 4 years. He can look back and say he was on the ground floor of the resurgence of Iowa basketball. But as to the NBA, I don't see that happening.

No chance at playing in the NBA. But he is having a helluva year. His defense has improved exponentially the last few years. I remember when he used to be a defensive liability, now he is hounding the other team's best perimeter player. Kudos to Matt for sticking it out all four years when it would have been easy and justifiable for him to transfer to a school in better shape than we were. Matt can take solace in knowing he was an integral part in the revival of the school he has always cherished.

why do you think gatens go to school? to get education and degree and career. nba is not something you can do for life. he has to think for future for himself and his future family

I agree but not even sure Alford would fit in today's NBA. It's not like he had a stellar career when he actually played 25 years ago.

And also not really good enough to play NBA ball.

I still laugh when watching the 30 for 30 clip when the Pacers draft Reggie Miller instead of Steve Alford and the fans were not happy. :)
