Garza and Nunge next year

Agree that cutting the rotation doesn't make up for losing you're top guy.

Jok's absence though made us less relient on one guy offensively. My belief is our offense goes stagnant from time to time as everyone tries to get the ball to Jok for a shot. Say what you want about Rutgers, but they are actually top 60 in defensive efficieny and we went out there and almost hung 50 on them in the 1H. For reference we only scored 68 on them at home with Jok.

Also, our defense improved by default.

None of this is to say we are better without Jok, he's certainly been a big reason for our success this year. I have made it known that I think Fran is playing him way too many minutes right now.

What I would do:
-Cut Kriener from rotation
-Cut Williams from rotation (BE backup PG)
-Cut Jok's minutes to 20-25 range.

That gives you a manageable 9 man rotation.

I think that's the best way to get to 9 guys

I don't think anyone is saying it's impossible to play 11 guys, we are saying it's not in the best interest of the team. As was mentioned in that article in another thread, it might not be a coincidence that Iowa played its best ball of the year when Cook was hurt for several games, and when Jok sat for two games, because it allowed for natural tightening of the rotation.

Also in your example I would argue that any player under 6 minutes isn't really part of the rotation, meaning we have been close to 9 deep over the last three games.
We'll have to agree to disagree on this point. If a guy is playing every game when the game is still in doubt he's in the rotation as far as I'm concerned.

Also, Williams played 5 or 6 minutes and then played 22. Kriener has played more than 6 minutes in games. You are taking pieces of my post out of context.

Like I said we can agree to disagree. There's nothing to be accomplished by discussing this further. Only Fran's opinion counts in the end.

The other knock on your original projection and why it wasn't realistic, is you were giving way too many minutes to the front court players.

You had JB, Moss, BE combined for 67 minutes, meaning one of the the other guys you listed would have to play 13 minutes at shooting guard?

At this point we aren't even certain if Cook or Wagner can play the three, so you have to spread 80 minutes at the 4/5 to Cook, Pemsl, Wagner, Garza, Kriener, not to mention Uhl, Nunge and Baer who can all play the 4. Good luck with that without cutting at least one or two from the rotation, which is what we are saying.
It wasn't a projection. It was an example of how 11 guys can get meaningful minutes game to game.

If Bohannon goes down Williams will much better prepared to play heavy minutes if he's getting on the court every game. The same is true of Kriener if a front court player goes down. And limiting Jok to 20 minutes makes zero sense to me.

You can't just play someone so they're better prepared if a starter gets hurt. Pretty much every team plays 8-9 guys, I have no idea why Fran is playing 11

Well Cook already went down and Kriener wasn't playing much in those games even with Cook out. So with Cook back and Kriener playing some it's pretty easy to see we have an overload of bigs. With Cook, Pemsl, Wagner, Uhl, and Baer we have enough bigs to withstand an injury.

Jok is playing hurt right now and the stats bear that out (30% FG, 18% 3 over the last 6). I think 20-25 minutes would be a more manageable range for him.

Bohannon - 28
Moss - 24
Cook - 20
Baer - 20
Pemsl - 18
Wagner - 17
Uhl - 15
Ellingson - 15
Kreiner - 15
Nunge - 14
Garza - 14

That's 200 minutes a game with an 11 player rotation and the big guys all averaging at least 14 minutes a game. Williams and/or Dailey may play ahead of someone listed but that means they're a better player. This also doesn't account for injuries, etc.

I am not suggesting this is the rotation. I am not suggesting these are the exact minutes guys will play in a given game. I'm simply laying out a scenario where there's playing time to go around.

Wait 1 year and Uhl's 15 minutes are available. Wait another year and Wagner, Ellingson and Baer free up 52 minutes.

Edit - At some point it makes sense that at least a couple guys will transfer. But that's okay. It means they weren't going to play...more minutes for the rest of the players. And the guys that leave will hopefully find playing time at their new destination...no hard feelings here.

Look at that and just think about it. That is A LOT of BIG 10 experience!!

Williams and Dailey will BOTH play. They have to. If not, then we are in trouble with our guards. Bohannon, Ellingson & Moss cannot be our backcourt entirely. If so, then we are in some serious S. We already are when you consider only our defense. More so, if you consider our offense recently...

Unless Connor backs up the point.

Uthoff led the B1G in blocks last season but no one would accuse him of being a rim protector. Woody blocked almost no one and he was a rim protector.
Exactly... Most of Uthoffs blocks were outside the lane. Had a bunch at the 3 pt line. Woody prevented penetration by just being there hence the rim protector title fitting. Blocking shots can be a part of earning that description but not the end all be all

Bingo.

Garza has the body type to be a rim protector. Positioning is very important too and will be the question mark for him.

Plus 3 of those guys red shirted and have an extra year of maturity, body development, etc.

That's an interesting point. In term's of years in the program, next year we will be:

4 (year in program): Uhl, Baer, Ellingson

3: Wagner, Moss, Williams

That's a pretty good amount of time put in along with all of our freshman who will be in there second year. Also, the overseas trip next summer should help next years squad develop more cohesiveness.
