Fran talks White - Uthoff

From his presser today:

"White and Uthoff going at it yesterday was one of the best one on one match ups I have seen since I have been here."

Fran has toned it down. I was expecting something along the lines of "White and Uthoff going at it yesterday was one of the best one on one match ups I have seen since Magic and Bird's battles in the 80's".

Well obviously Fran never saw the Lickliter-Stubbs match ups in practice.

(Not entirely sure if Stubbs was ever here while lil Lick was, but don't feel like looking it up)

From talking to people I know that are close with the basketball program, they have said Uthoff is Iowa's best player. If Marble returns for 2013-2014 season, losing only May, gaining Uthoff and Jok Iowa is going to be scary good. Wish Uthoff could play this season.

I like the sound of that. Scary good? Let's hope so! I'd settle for good, but I'll take as much "good" as Fran wants to give us.. ;)

Sounds like Uthoff is a gamer - that's a big statement about him. I do love that our players are pushing each other hard in practice.. You know that didn't happen under Lick. I've got a real good feeling about the future of our basketball program.

Agree with this totally.

So, let me get this straight. A kid that has basically not seen the floor in a D1 game, yet, he's viewed by "people close to the basketball program" as being our best player?

Ok.

If Uthoff is our best player and if Jok can regain his explosivness, is it actually possible that white doesn't even start next year? It's highly unlikely but wow if it happens.

Believe it or not D-1 teams hold these things called "practices" before their games. They don't just show up at the games like your rec league team, they actually play together beforehand to try to improve their team and indvidual skills before and after their games.

Now, I'm not saying I believe Uthoff is the best player on the team, but if he were there's no reason people close to the basketball team wouldn't be able to tell this from one of these "practice" sessions. Now I know this probably sounds really crazy to you too, but there were people at Iowa St last year who felt Royce White was their best player before he had seen the floor in a single D-1 game, crazy right?

No way.

IF those two factors did indeed come to fruition, I think the lineup would look like this:

PG-Gesell
SG-Marble
SF-Uthoff/Jok
PF-White
C-Woodbury

But I also have doubts that Jok will regain that explosiveness before arriving on campus. I think he might get it back, but perhaps not as a freshman.

You do understand that the players he is being compared to are the ones he practices against right? Not saying its true just saying that the best player is usually pretty obvious during practice.

LOL beat me to it and said it better. Well done.

There's a lot of things basketballman doesn't understand. The concept of these "practices" is far from the only thing.
