Fran McCaffery Says Hawkeyes Will Rebound from Down Season

then kirk is a hot head also, right? he's thrown his headset on the ground. he's gone the yards on the side line to get to an official and get in his face. i disagree with you that kirk is a hot head. neither are. they can be emotional and that, in my opinion, is a good thing.

We can agree to disagree. Every coach gets upset. There are few that get as upset as Fran. Heck there have been multiple threads on this board talking about how his behavior probably costs him with officials.

The way Fran goes out on the court steaming mad going after officials being held back by his assistants is nothing Ferentz has ever done or will ever do if we know anything about the man. It makes Fran look like a 6th grade bully going toward the bike racks after school.

Bingo.

He said those fans that didn't appreciate Woodbury, Gesell, Clemmons and Uthoff were idiots and morons, to which I agreed. He didn't even say they were above criticism, just under appreciated.

Then it gets turned into he's calling all Iowa fans names.

Where is this big base that didn't appreciate those guys? There are some, but I've lived in several P5 communities/states and I have never ever heard a coach mention this type of things. There are always detractors. MSU fans really go after players and IZZO.

The better question is, "Why did he feel the need to bring this up and draw attention to it?" It wasn't necessary.

It comes across to me that he's in a round a bout way trying to deflect criticism about his lack of player development in some players.

It would seem to me that most on here would think that group left some gas in the tank or food on the table. Most of those do not put any blame on the players. Every fan base wants to win a Conf title once in a while.

Agree with most of this. Coaches who have mastered the craft (Izzo, Ryan, Knight, Keady, the Blue Bloods) make their point in ways that will buy them calls in the long run. It's like a salesperson who knows how to pressure a customer in a way where they don't realize they are being pressured. Their outbursts are calculated and well timed to motivate their players and/or the crowd and to perhaps swing a critical call their way.

Too often, Fran's outbursts wake up the other team and their fans and minimize our chances of getting critical calls like the Minnesota game last year, or the MSU game where Harris denies Basabe at the end of regulation by sticking his hand through the net, an obvious goaltending violation.

Remember my previous comments in other threads about the KenPom category "luck" and how we have finished in the bottom 10% out of all Division 1 teams four of the last eight years. That's not my opinion, that's modern scientific metrics that some posters frequently reference. Well, something else is going on here. We've been unlucky, but nobody is that unlucky. Maybe that's the scientific measurable that proves that we don't get enough calls, especially in critical situations. I don't know. I've always believed that calls even out and you notice the officiating more when you don't get a couple but who knows, I could be naive too.

My sense is that at least several people on here didn't listen to the interview. If they did, they didn't listen closely to the questions and answers. It seems that way from the comments on here.

Sorry, Dr. Phil Clavin. That's all I have for you today. Heading out to cover spring football press conferences. Later.

I personally agree about detractors of those players.

Lots of strong language on this thread. Will just add two quick comments. First, if we had the power to select a series of pictures of most of the other BT basketball coaches that would seem to provide evidence of out of control behavior, I wonder what that would look like? Secondly, I think I have noticed a change in Fran's demeanor over the time he has been at Iowa. I really think he has been cognizant of other's views of his game time behavior and has worked to improve. Just my thoughts.

You could be right but I think the jury is still out. He didn't make it to halftime in this year's Maryland game. He had a nasty situation with an official at the end of last year's Maryland home game. Speraw had to restrain him a time or two in this year's BTT. I'm trying to remember the last time an opposing coach was ejected during a game. Or escorted off the floor by law enforcement. Or suspended for a conference game. Or reprimended by his AD for "crossing the line" (the MSU chair slam).

I love the guy's passion. But Olson and Davis had passion too. I'd just like to see our players respond to his passion better than the opposing ones do.

For the record, he had a legitimate gripe in this year's Maryland game (head contact to Pemsl, fouling JBo on that traveling violation, Bruno's stare down of Cook.) Someone was going to get hurt if Fran didn't do something. I think the second official didn't realize the first one had already T'd him up and they should have got together and rescinded one tech and allowed Fran to stay in the game. Fran was more in control than Cedar Falls or Madison by a wide margin.

neither has fran. the question was regarding how he felt about those who didn't appreciate Woodbury, Gesell, Clemons and Uthoff's efforts on the defensive end and what that meant to the team. Remember, Fran had to publicly defend Woody multiple times because "fans" were mercilessly (and incorrectly) attacking him for four years. Why? because he couldn't dunk. because he never developed a 15 ft jumper. THOSE fans he called morons...and idiots. And the parallel he drew was how Jay Wright (after 1st final 4) was able to recruit a higher level of talent, but they were not good teammates. So the "morons" and "idiots" were to those (actually fans and non-fans) who crucify players and don't understand what their true value is to the team.

Kirk HAS done that. we all know he has defended his players in that fashion.
As I said above....I acknowledged Fran was calling out a,segment of the fan base. Still that is not wise and it is still insulting the fan base in non constructive ways. He could simply say I disagree with them and here is why. Fran just comes as an arrgant prick otherwise when he flips stuff like that. He as a head coach at Iowa should have a higher standard and act like it.

Um, you know Kirk got a warning and a penalty after going on the field to yell at the officials (See below). He was right, and the officials missed the call, but Kirk does get upset (and goes onto the field - although it's not on camera). Listen to the Husker fans boo him. :)

Again that is not the case. It is unacceptable to call any portion of the fan base those names in his position. Even if fans can act that way he needs to be mindful of what he says comes across. That was unprofessional by Fran and should not be defended. I really think Iowa needs to invest in a very good PR firm.

If you really think about it.....what good comes out of a head coach referring to any segment of his or her fan base as "morons" or "idiots?"

Ask former Cubs manager Lee Elia. And he called the small percentage of guilty fans a lot worse than morons. More like c**ks*****s. And m****rf*****s. He wrote a good portion of the dirty version of the Michigan school song that every BIG band sings downtown the night before a game without even realizing it? Although some lyrics may no longer be appropriate in the wake of Penn State and MSU. Those who know the song know what I mean.

And what the announcers were praising as "fly motion" and "menutia"(sp) was in actuality as illegal as the day is long. We had a touchdown to Scott Chandler taken away from us in the 2006 Alamo Bowl on almost the exact same throw to an ineligible receiver. Those Nebraska fans were getting impatient. They had to go home and milk the bulls. (I know, I know, but we're talking Nebraska fans here).

Les Grobstein, who still works at Chicago sports WSCR, was the one who had his tape recorder rolling that day. April 29, 1983. That was the last year that the Cubs players had to walk down the left field line at Wrigley to get to their clubhouse. They couldn't access it from the dugout. And they were sitting ducks to the insults and occasional tossed Old Styles from the fans. That's what started the whole thing.

At least he know that eighty five and fifteen added up to a hundred. Yogi Berra infamously joked (Ithink) that ninety percent of the game was mental and the other half physical.

Talk about the not so good ole days geez

If the Iowa Basketball Program was a WWE character, it would be Kurt Angle right now...minus the gold medal and exceptional wrestling talent. This symbolizes the lack of mental toughness to a tee....lol!

On a side note, Fran would probably make a great WWE executive or manager.

Actually, it would be Kurt Angle then (2005)... he actually embraces the chant now. :)

There are several you just don't see of other coaches. Next year will be the real test when it involves his kids.

I speak from experience. Maybe I'm the only poster on here that has bumped a ref while officiating. I didn't do it to motivate the team. I knew exactly what I was doing. It was stupid. Deserved, but stupid.
