For those of you that don't remember re: Stoops

This is the first time I've seen this topic come up with actual knowledge of what happened. Usually the kirk goggles come on and the thread gets hi-jacked and turned into a "kirk is the best we can ever do and Iowa won't ever do better" thread.

Pick up the Zabel book. From what I recall from it, at Stoops' father's funeral, Mama Stoops asked Hayden to give put a Hawkeye uniform on him because she knew he wanted to be buried a Hawkeye. That's pretty powerful. I know Bob respects Kirk. It's pretty clear in the comments he's made. But if Kirk ever leaves, Gary Barta better break his back to bring Bob here and not screw it up. Bob will come.

And to those that think that Iowa can't be that good...The first year I watched sports, my entire family, grandparents, aunts, uncles were all CYCLONE season ticket holders and still are. I was 5 years old and Iowa was #1 in the frigging nation. For 7 weeks. Chuck Long, Hayden Fry, Ronnie Harmon. I was born a Hawkeye at that point for life. Yes, it can be done here. What Hayden did after 20 years of losing here, can be done on the other side by taking it to the next level or at least maintain that level. I argue whether or not we're currently at that level. We have never been #1 under Kirk and from a financial and facility standpoint, way ahead of what Hayden had. You have to inspire kids to come here. I just don't think we have that inspiration right now.

Wow. This is surprising. KF showing some emotion and fire perhaps. Oh that was sooo long ago.

Maybe he should channel Bob Bowlsby and his initial interview on Saturdays at about 1030am.:)

I take it you think a good interview is jumping up and down and getting all John McCain - Yeeeeaaaww!

As I understand what happened, it did not go that way (that shallow). If what I was told was accurate, it was calculated, planned out, specific, detailed. And caught the interviewers off guard. He had a very specific plan for how Iowa was to get back on track from where they were. He was impressive to them at that time with what he said.

Sheesh. I don't need a history lesson, Young Man...and particularly not from a pup like you! ;):D

You're right though, OU recruits itself. Stoops would not have had the same talent had he taken the Iowa job, ergo he would not have had the same results.
I contend that Stoops' record, had he taken the Iowa job instead of Ferentz, would have been very similar to that of Ferentz, +/- maybe 10-15 wins.
He's not a "better" coach than Ferentz; he's just in a "better" football program.

I'm just saying, those programs are in much different situations than OU was at the time Stoops was hired.

I'm not 100% sure that Stoops would have done better, but I'm also not sure he wouldn't have. Even without head coaching experience, he was a higher-profile guy than Ferentz. Perhaps he could have had an earlier impact due to more impact recruiting? Not saying he would, but it's a possibility.

But no way do we win a NC in his second year. That kind of turn-around only happens in a "sleeping giant" situation.

Do we forget what Hayden did in year 2 after 20 losing seasons at Iowa? No not a national championship, but comparitively, yes.

i haven't read thru this entire thread, but i don't anyone here has a solid lock on how this went down. even if stoops said this is how it went down, he could be saving face to iowa fan i.e. never burn bridges as he loves iowa. and to compare iowa to oklahoma is laughable at best. i think many iowa fans must live in a fog of delusion.

You should read through the entire thread then.

hayden fry had a losing season in year two. did you forget that?

in year three - 1981 - he went to the rose bowl with 3 regular season losses and two conference losses - the non conference loss was to - yes - the CLOWNS!!

Yeah, I get that. I am being only slightly sarcastic. I am sure he did impress them.

I just wish he, and his team, showed more passion on Saturdays. I wish they were better prepared. I wish he actually appeared to be enjoying himself on the sidelines. I wish I wish I wish. I wish he was less like Tom Landry and more like Hayden Fry. Football might be fun to watch again.

You know, less predictable and more seat-of-your-pants like..

So what you mean to say is, they weren't undefeated? And they didn't win the Rose Bowl that year, either. Still a terrific coaching job, and a defense I'd fund a project for time travel to see, but not an undefeated NC season in Year 2.

yeah, more 3rd and long draws. back to the good ole days.

i am in by no means taking anything away from Fry, am a big fan, but the revisionist history on this board is pathetic.

I didn't mean to downplay Fry's coaching job that year in any way. It was terrific, and for where the program had been, it was unbelievable. But at the end of the day, Stoops' Sooners had a better 2000 season than Fry's '81 Hawkeyes.

Read the whole thread. Ok I screwed up. Year 3 we went to the Rose Bowl after 20 losing seasons. Therefore, any information that we screwed up with Bob Stoops within the thread is completely nullified? Great job. And my point is that what Hayden did at Iowa in YEAR 3 is what I would compare to winning a NC at Oklahoma in year 2. Both remarkable.

Read the damn thread before bringing your skepticism. Or go buy the damn Jim Zabel book.
Here's the cliff notes: we had him, he wanted a decision. We didn't make a decision. Bowlsby wanted Terry Allen. Marv Cook and Ann Johnson got Kirk a look and Kirk impressed. By then OU had Bob locked up. End of story.

i've read the zabel book. i've spoken with him personally. i've spoken with people in the know personally. former players of the era.

but thanks for the lesson.

You want to compare Hayden's offensive mind to KF and KOK's?

No, I am not referring to his "little dumplings" comment but rather the X's and O's.;)

who do you give credit to, regarding the offense between 80 and 89? do you give that same person credit between 90 and 98?

Fry's offensive mind is still coaching at KSU.

Juicy little tidbit in case you forgot.

Who wasn't "shackled" by a committee and hired Bobby Stoops at OU?

Former ISU Head Football Coach, Donnie Duncan. I guess the buck stopped with him.

What are you offering to the thread? "Hey, I'm too lazy to read the thread including posts from people with some pretty good info. But anyways, I'm just here to hi-jack the thread and be the voice of pure antagonism". Great job!

C'mon I didn't see Bill-o anywhere near Hayden during all of those HULA Bowls. Just Hayden and his playbook.:D

So would you rather have Hayden or KOK running your offense?
