Football hiring thoughts

Brian Smith???

Call me pessimistic, but after Brian backed out of his committment to Iowa to go play at his dad's alma mater at Notre Dame, I just don't see Kirk giving him a job:)

I like the idea of Brian replacing Reese if it happens. I think replacing Reese is long overdue but that is just my opinion. A guy like Brian has been around football, and I mean around football, day and night, all his life. He can't help but have absorbed a great deal of football knowledge. I would assume he will fit in nicely and the guys playing for him will like him. The key of course will be whether he has the personality to recruit; not all coaches have that ability and some much more than others. Morgan was a recruiter.

Is being on the same career path as Josh McDaniels considered a good thing? Hasn't he failed in spectacular fashion in both of his post Patriot stops?
He was the OC of one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history. He was also probably too young to be an HC with Denver

In Denver, he was given way too much responsibility all at once, [especially at such a youthful age/experience level], as not only HC, but GM as well; and the dominoes fell as they did. It was probably a good learning curve for him and he will probably re-emerge somewhere, someday, as a very good headcoach.

If you read the most recent article posted about BF, you'll remember some of his comments about the NFL vs college ball. It seems his heart is in the college game. He also had some interesting comments about getting to know his dad better after playing for him. It's not such a stretch. If his goal is to be a HC in the NFL, he'll stay put with very, very good reason. If he loves the college game, the OLine coaching spot seems ideal.

I will say if KF hires Brian, I'm sure it won't happen without a ton of conversation and introspection. I just don't see KF putting his kid in a position to fail or be heavily criticized. If he hires Brian, it's on his own merit.

Also, as Jon pointed out some of the other family rationale that plays out in a move as such, especially to gain more all around experience, but also, the $'s (200? medium) he would get at Iowa would equate to almost 300 medium in a metro area like Boston.

same thing is true for Tom Moore in cost of comparative living with NY.

Also, I think Jon's new confident insight and intuition in this hire may come from who he was with and around last night at the Norm Parker outing. (I'm guessing)
