Ferentz Wonders: How Does Ohio State Give Away Yellow Pants?

Q: Do you think about giving players gold pants for beating Iowa State (like Ohio State does for its players when they beat Michigan, which were sold by some Ohio State players)

Ferentz: I am still trying to figure out how that works.

Q: They win their pants.

Ferentz: Those things are worth money, right? Perhaps its a part of their bowl gift.

Q: 70 years of tradition….

Ferentz: It still doesn’t make it right…I am assuming that comes out of their bowl gift allotment. We are not going to do that.

It's a good question that Kirk raises...the pants have value...schools are not allowed to give such things of value to players...you'd think they are doing it legally...but you never can tell

im sure there are other things besides pants given! shoes, clothing who knows from name brand companies

Like to see the Captain coming hard. He is an elder-statesman in the league now. Time to stand up and start calling them like he sees them. Traditionally, he has been a little too Aw shucks about some of these things.

Where is the line drawn when it comes to t-shirts, workout shirts, warmups, jackets, etc given to the players? Is there certain number of them they can get in a single year? You know they all sport the same exact Nike shirts and sweatshirts that come with having Nike as the official outfitter for the team.

There are lots of clothes and shoes (Nike) but that is part of their scholarship. Every school does it. Even the managers and employees get free gear. Not sure how it works, but it is ok by the NCAA

That's actually a good question, what if they don't make a bowl???? Then do they not get the pants??? Not sure when the last time they didn't make a bowl but still beat Michigan was though.

This is a very good question. Beating Michigan is has nothing to do with a bowl game so I am not sure how you make the correlation that it is a bowl gift. Maybe they got an exemption from the NCAA, if not, add it to the list of infractions!!!

Do you guys have any idea how much free stuff D1 athletes get? It's insane. I lived with members of the Iowa bball team. Free shoes, clothes, etc. Who cares about gold pants?

The point is, where do you draw the line? Iowa would have a much easier time recruiting if they gave every player a gold Cadillac every time they win a game.

NCAA better look into this while they are there. Sounds a little fishy... at this point nothing from JT or OSU would surprise me.

Looks like something a little kid gives his mom to put on her charm braclet, when he plays pee wee football.
