Ferent'z future

Was talking with some people on Saturday and one said that he thought Ferentz would head to PSU if offered the job. I know he just signed a big extension, but it is his home state and it would be easier to recruit. I hope he stays a Hawk until he retires, but what do you think?

Why would he leave and go somewhere where he will be expected to produce at a high level all the time? Here, he can go 8-4 and people won't bug him.

Really cause nobody is complaining about having 2 losses this year? Expectations are what you build them to be. People are already expecting next year to be a very good year with everything that we lose. Those are expectations. and to go to your dream job. Yeah I think it's a real possibility

Um, have you read the boards in the last 2-3 days? Tons of "fans" are calling for his head after two losses. Hawk fans are a passionate bunch but they really need to reel it in after a loss. There's a lot of people who have taken ridiculous to new heights. And, no, I don't think he'd ever leave to go to PSU.

This is one season out of twelve. After we drop off this year next year season ticket sales will go back to normal and fans will expect an eight win season with the losses on the defensive side of the ball. He will get the token eight wins and everybody will be happy.

Ferentz is not the type of guy that would take another job within the conference. So I feel comfortable saying with 100% certainty that there's no way he goes to Penn St.

I really think he will stay at Iowa through the 2017 season (which would be his youngest, Steven's, final year) and then retire. That would put him at 62 years old.

I recall after 2007 that a lot of people wanted him gone. He may want to go to PSU to see if he can get that elusive NC. It's probably more likely there. I don't see expectations going away. I think Iowa will have some really good teams in the future because he is recruiting at a high level, but Iowa won't be good every year. It's just part of being IOWA. I'm not saying he's leaving, but I think it's a possibility.

He won't retire at 62. He already told Dan Patrick that he can envision himself going up til 70. Only reason he retires that early is because of an unseen health issue.

I had that thought as well, but don't know how much the love of Pennsylvania is. I hope you're right, and I'd take 7 more seasons of Ferentz.

Ferentz loves Iowa. Furthermore, he has 100% control at Iowa. He's not going to trade that deal just so that he can get slightly better recruits. That's simply not how Ferentz is wired.

Hawkfromnorwalk,

Bitter much guy?

It wouldn't suprise me if he took the Penn State job if offered. He is from the area and grew up watching Joe Pa. He has a lot of respect for Penn State. However, he has build a lot of relationships in Iowa, so hopefully he would stay.

For those who want his head, they are just dumb. Ask Michigan, Tennesse, and Nebraska how that worked out for them.

he's a hawk until he retires.

This. But if he should leave, I think we make a push to get Beilema. Some people can take shots at the guy all they want but he can coach and isn't afraid of making mistakes. I'll take the risk taker mentality over the conservative approach any day.

I think there may be some truth to Ferentz leaving sometime in the near future simply because of the loss of Norm. I think Norm was the glue that held this staff together. I don't see the other Parker taking over as DC either so internally there could be some problems.

Beilema's contract runs through 2012 unless there was an extension that I couldn't find. The guy has a 45-15 overall record and is 23-13 in conference including this year. His teams have been to a bowl every year he's been a HC and have finished the season ranked every year with only one exception.

He has ties to Iowa as both a player and coach.

Plenty of HCing experience and Iowa ties. He's young, energetic and tough as nails. He would be my choice should Ferentz decide to leave or refuse to fire the current OC.

I'm not bitter, it's just the way it is. Remember before the season started when we were getting all the preseason love? There was that contingency of the fanbase that hates being rated high. There were literally fans out there that were scared because we were ranked high. These fans seem to typify the run of the mill, middle aged Iowa fan. They like sneaking up on people and when a good season breaks out (like last year), it's an even bigger reward. That is why Kirk will stay, because 75% of the fanbase digs being the underdog.

That's not what exactly what he said. He said that he wouldn't rule it out (but that there was no way he was coaching until he was 80). It's easier to say that now, when you're 54. Coaching is like dog years. Take a look at a picture of Ferentz just 8 years ago in 2002 and compare it to now. Same with Tressell. It's unbelievable how much college football coaching ages a person.

I hear what you are saying about the last few days, but a couple of people have called for his head, not a "ton." lets not blow the venting out of proportion.

No way in hell does a DC hold together an entire team of unhappy assistants. Not buying it. Ferentz deserves WAY more credit than that. And if Ferentz goes to PSU and Beilema comes here I'll trade in all of my black and gold and start rooting for the Nittany Lions.

As for the "ton" of people calling for his job...go to the other site. They're all standing on ledges ready to jump. It's ridiculous.

What game has O'Keefe cost us this year? What game did he cost us last year? Everybody who wanted a more explosive offense this year is getting it, but just as I predicted would happen with an explosive offense, we are scoring too fast and leaving the defense on the field WAY too long. We need to run a fairly conservative offense because the TEAM'S philosophy is ball control on offense and then only leave the defense on the field for a limited amount of time. This year, with the exception of the ISU game, I think we have been scoring too fast and the defense is getting more plays than they had last year or in 2008. I would have killed to see some more long, clock eating drives that gave the d-line time to rest in the past two weeks, but oh no, everyone wanted a more explosive offense.

Well, we got it, but that offense means we have more kickoffs every week (look at how that has treated us - the one returned for a TD at AZ and the offsides against Wisky are two huge plays that came after scores) and less TOP. Call me crazy, but I'd take the old conservative O'Keefe who pounded the ball and controlled the clock but only scored 24 or so a week and left trusted the defense to give up 20 or less a week over the new wide open O'Keefe who has helped put the team in position to win but is left hanging because the defense has been on the field all day and has an empty tank when those all important final drives of the game go against us like they did at Arizona and against Wisconsin. There is actually a pretty delicate balance going on out there and the anti-O'Keefe crowd doesn't understand how his style significantly inflates our defense's yardage and scoring statistics in many years. O'Keefe directed the offense to what should have been 34 points, the week before he put up 38 on Michigan - this team's problem is NOT the old O'Keefe style but rather the new O'Keefe style that everyone wanted to see. Be careful what you wish for.
