Ferent'z future

Our offense is predictable and vanilla at best.
KOK is a brutal OC and has been since he's been at Iowa. The only thing that continues to save his job is the loyalty that KF shows to his coaches and the Iowa defense. There is a reason that an OC for a top 25 team continues to be OC well past his prime and it's because he's not a good candidate for a HC position.

I get a kick out of the 'Iowa's offense is simple, etc' stuff. Do you realize how many counters they have off of each play? How a certain play's action is set up to look the same on two or three other plays, and what that does to a defense? Teams know Iowa is going to use play action and teams know Iowa is going to run. Yet, Iowa still moves the ball with play action and Iowa still runs the ball.

As for KOK...he is doing exactly what Ferentz wants him to do with regards to offensive philosophy.

This. But if he should leave, I think we make a push to get Beilema. Some people can take shots at the guy all they want but he can coach and isn't afraid of making mistakes. I'll take the risk taker mentality over the conservative approach any day.

I fart in your general direction.

I hope Kirk stays and all these shallow, complaining, woeful Hawk "fans" move to Pennsylvania. But then they wouldn't be able to call it Happy Valley anymore. Oh, bother.

This thread is ridiculous. KF is not leaving, and if he did, it would be a sad day for Iowa football. And the only reason it wouldn't be a catostrophic day for Iowa football is because of KF.

And this is from someone who has been very critical of his coaching this past week and blamed him for the loss.

Conjecture of this sort is not healthy.

Not to argue that stats don't speak for themselves, but we're forgetting a key point when discussing the offense. If our defense is shutting them down and getting things done, then our average starting field position is going to be good, which means if andd when we score it translates into less yardage. Therefore although numbers don't lie, I'd rather take my chances with an offense starting with good field position and less distance to move the ball then starting every drive at our 20 and racking up a ton of yards just to get into scoring position.

Numbers may not lie, but sometimes we have to put more thought into them than simply stating the obvious.

Here is a fact...Iowa had the 2nd to worst rushing offense in 2004, 101st out of 116 in total offense, 68th in scoring defense and gave up more than 17 points per game, and that team shared a Big Ten title.

Iowa is 5-2 right now because special teams have let it down. This offense is more than good enough to lead Iowa to victories.

Some are over analyzing things; it's inconsistent special teams play and a few other little things that cost Iowa the Wisconsin and Arizona games.

That's my point Jon, our offense has been bad for as long as KOK has been in charge of it. How many top 25 teams have an offense that produce less than we do? Iowa is #50 in net total offensive yards as of today on ESPNs website.

Auburn #4
Oregon #2
Boise St #31
TCU #5
Mich St # 9
Mizzou #43
Alabama #11
Utah #21
Oklahoma #29
Wisky #17
OSU #8
LSU #76
Stanford #22
Nebraska #26
Arizona #40
Fl St #46
Ok St #7
Iowa #50
Arkansas #18
South Carolina #53
Miss St #34
Miaim (FL) #55
Virg Tech #16
Nevada #10
Baylor #1

FYI just in case you missed the bold and italics, there are 3 teams in the top 25 that have fewer net yards on offense than Iowa.

People want to know why we are losing these games and I'm telling you why. Our offense simply doesn't produce. The clock management thing is also a huge killer. Does anybody remember the game last year against fOSU when we played for overtime and lost? We had the ball with over a minute to go in the game and we ran the clock out thinking our offense could produce in 3 or 4 plays....you can't kick start an offense if it's been sitting idle.

Rolling? WTF would you consider to be a bad offense? We are ranked #50 in total offense, #43 in passing offense and #60 in rushing offense. Our 3rd down efficiency is #43 as well. We have converted on two 4th downs this year which ranks 95th. The only thing that is winning games is our defense because special teams is killing us too.

Our average Time of Possession is 31:04 so it's not like our D is on the field a bunch.

Execution is what coaches are paid for. How many 'five men in the backfield' have been called on us this year? Our offense is predictable and vanilla at best.

Iowa is scoring 30+ points per game. Given that Ferentz doesn't run up scores ... that number could EASILY be higher. Furthermore, Iowa only features one experienced RB. That definitely holds our running game back a bit. Despite those factors, our O is still moving the ball VERY well! In fact, no D has really managed to "stop" our O. Arizona successfully made us one-dimensional ... however, it wasn't even as much their D that had done that as it had been the fact that they had forced us to operate in "catch-up" mode.

The FACT of the matter here is that if Iowa hadn't been losing, we wouldn't be hearing your complaints right now.

That goes with every year. We didn't hear too much complaining about the offense last year, except when we didn't go for it with OSU at the end of regulation. It's human nature. I don't blame the O, but I think discipline killed the O, when it was 3rd and 1, then all of a sudden 2 penalties later and a 3rd and 11 followed by a poor ST play. The defense that everyone expected to be all world isn't as experienced and the LB and secondary is struggling a little bit. Iowa just can't have players step in and be the next Angerer, Edds, and Spievey. This team is pretty good, but not great.

I think that part of the problem here is that many fans EXPECTED the squad to be even better this year ... and yet, as a whole, it doesn't appear to be.

And, to be fair, I think that many of the new guys who have stepped in have actually done a pretty good job given their experience-level. However, just as you indicated, you don't replace ultra-talented AND experienced guys with first-year starters and not get a little bit of a drop-off.

In fact, the Hawks DID have a dropoff against the run last year ... and that was a result of having to "replace" King and Kroul. The fortunate thing is that while we weren't quite as good agaisnt the run ... we made up for it by being EVEN BETTER against the pass.

This year, on the flip side, we're arguably better against the run ... and we can say that even without having superior LB play. The bad news is that we aren't nearly as good against the pass. And, quite frankly, I think that we'd be stronger against the pass (than we are now) had Tarp been healthy through the entire season. Unfortunately, injuries don't work that way.
