Excellent podcast Jon.....

I want to know exactly why Iowa can't be a top 10 program for the long haul? Nebraska showed it could be done in a cold weather state. It is all about taking advantage of opportunities when you have the chance....something the Badgers have done quite well with in both of their major sports. We have had our chances to seize the day in the Ferentz Era (09 at the Shoe, a highly talented 2010 squad that tanked similar to 97 team, the few years coming off 02-04....in particular -2005-2006 teams, all come to mind).

When Iowa gets on a signifcant big stage...they choke. And, Iowa struggles against teams they are suppose to beat on a regular basis. But, they have been in the mix, they just need someone to lead them over the hump and more or less keep them there. Imagine if we just beat the teams we are suppose to beat on a regular basis how much different things would be looking right now.

Short answers: demographics and overall resources (population base, etc.). And Nebraska HAD success. Once screws got tightened with things like scholly limits, media news travelling at the speed of lightning (things like Lawrence Phillips), things changed for better and worse. The Big Boys are more in the news now, but they still can "fight" better with the NCAA.

2010 could be explained by the wrong injuries at the wrong time. I won't even address 2009 at O$U. But in the Ferentz Era, in spite of four Top 10 finishes, there were also finishes outside the Top 25. And it wasn't just matter of "choking". Basically, we aren't--and can't really claim--any prolonged, decades-spanning Top 10 status.

Jon,
Terrible podcast. Just terrible. The write ups and podcast was nothing but a backtrack to comeback to what your narrative all offseason was. You had Iowa picked to be an 8-9 win team and you talked it right back into a dismal finish just to support your offseason narrative.

Maybe be you should be a used car salesman.

The one pick that.really gets my goat is the Purdont game. It is at home, it's senior day, the players will be pumped and ready. They won't let Purdont pull off the upset.

One would think so. But it'll depend on how the season has gone leading up to it... Remember when they played Western Michigan on senior day with a bowl game on the line? Yeah I'm trying to forget that too... To say it's impossible is just not true. It's pretty much already happened under Ferentz and not that long ago. If Iowa has 8 wins going into that game and has been playing well then I agree with you. But if Iowa has 5 6 or even 7 wins going into it. (if Iowa has less then 7 that means they'll have some bad losses on resume already) then all bets are off for me on thinking they'll win for sure.
