ESPN: Woodbury to crack Top 50, possibly Top 25

I am confused by the logic of this. You say he is holding out because he likes the attention from the recruiting services, but you are certain he will go to Iowa. So he loves the attention of Rivals, but is willing to spurn UNC and Kansas and having 80% of his games on ESPN, to go to Iowa where he will have the undivided attention of The Quad City Times and Big 10 Network's overflow channels.

I don't think it's necessarily about star ratings from Rivals/Scout. But, being able to say that you were offered a scholarship by Kansas, Duke, UNC, etc. would be pretty cool, even if you never had any intention of going there. You can still say they wanted you.

Again, very bizarre logic. He wants to be wanted, but he doesn't want them? Who is he going to brag to about his offer sheet? The 7,100 people watching him play in a half-empty arena at Iowa?

If Woodbury and Gessell were to commit to the Hawks, odds are that they wouldn't be playing in a half-empty arena. As far as the logic goes, I really don't see how it's so bizarre. Perhaps it's a sign of insecurity, and he wants everyone to know that he is a legit player. Getting offers from KU/UNC/etc. certainly says that much. Or maybe he wants to be the guy who spurned all of those schools so that he could be a cornerstone in the effort to bring the program back to life again. Or maybe he's just having fun with the process. You only get to do this once.

Thankfully, Adam has been to Kinnick Stadium to see how fanatical Iowa fans follow their sports, and has parents who are Hawk fans that can emphasize to Adam how Iowa was in the top 25 in attendance in basketball ever since they started tracking it back in the 80's,until Lick came to town. And that he would be playing in the Big Ten which has led the country in attendance since they started tracking it.

You do know how pathetic it is to hang around a rival's website day after day, just trolling? Go find an ISU site to be positive on...please.

How many "ifs" is a top 50 prospect going to take a chance on? IF you come here, then MAYBE other recruits will come, and MAYBE attendance will get better, and MAYBE we can compete for a tournament spot in a year or two.

Or, he can look at a top program like KU or UNC, know he is going to run with top players, know he is going to be in a packed arena everywhere he goes, know he is going to have the exposure of ESPN every game, and know he is going to have a deep tournament run every year.

Look, to be honest with you guys, I really want this guy to go to Iowa. I honestly do. But some people here are convinced he is going to Iowa City, when I sit here and wonder what Iowa, one of the worst BCS conference basketball teams, has to offer a top recruit.

sorry if this has already been discussed, wasn't there another thread that announced woodbury would be announcing relatively soon? does this change things?

Well, I don't believe you want Woodbury to be at Iowa...
With that said, what Iowa has to offer is a talentless roster that competed night in and night out in the Big Ten, save a couple blowout. Iowa beat Purdue and Michigan State with the talentless roster that they have.
Is Iowa one of the worst BCS conference basketball teams, in terms of record the last four years, there is a strong arguement.
Iowa's record was not indicative of the season that they truly had. Basabe/Cartwright/Marble/Gatens are players that can play on any team in the Big Ten, all the time starters, maybe not in all cases. The fact is Iowa returns a lot from a team that lost at least 6 games all by themselves, they didn't get beat, Iowa lost the games themselves.
When you take a look at it from that perspective, I really don't think you can say they were one of the worst BCS conference teams around.
This year will be different, Iowa will have something that resembles a bench and that bench will provide more scoring and all-around athleticism, something that Iowa sorely lacked last season and a huge reason for losing those 6 games last season.
What does Iowa have to offer a top recruit? Take a look at the big picture of what Fran has done since his hiring, he has taken a program that has had nothing but bad press for a decade and made them a resilient program that is on its way up. The folks that want to keep ripping Iowa for their record need to wake up. Last season could possibly be the only losing season Fran will have and think about what he walked into. The mentality and image of the program have changed for the better and will only continue to do so. Fran and staff have a plan and it would be nice to see Woodbury/Gesell/Meyer/Bell be a part of that plan. There are a lot of pieces at Iowa right now and unfortunately, Cartwright will be gone after this season, but the cupboard won't be bare like it was when Fran walked on campus.

I can't blame Adam for basking in well deserved glory. It would be hard to not enjoy the acclaim he is now receiving. That will make it all the better when he selects his beloved Hawks over Kansas and NC among others who are determined to keep the Hawks down. He can look forward to playing with Peter Jok and the other Hawks who will make a determined run for the crown in time. He Will open the door for the best to enter with his commitment, relishing his status as one of the players who brought the Hawks back to deserved glory. Adam will be remembered as one of the Hawkeye greats.

Ten recruiting story lines to look for in July - ESPN

Can Woodbury do it again?
Raise your hand if you had Adam Woodbury (Sioux City, Iowa/East) winning MVP honors at the NBPA Top 100 camp. The No. 57-ranked player is going to crack the top 50 the next time we produce a list. The big question is does he move closer to the top 25 and into All-American status or slide a few spots neatly into the top 50 based off his NBPA Top 100 Camp effort. We expect a slew of head coaches to track him from the LeBron James Skills Academy to the Nike EYBL Peach Jam, each thinking the same thing. If Woodbury replicates his NBPA Top 100 Camp effort then it'll take him no more than a day or two to turn into the hottest center prospect in the country, not named Andre Drummond (Middletown, Conn./St. Thomas More) or Kaleb Tarczewski (Claremont, N.H./St. Mark's). The biggest leap is going from good to great and Woodbury has a chance to earn that distinction in July.
I had him becoming a Hawk.....Does that count, Storminspank.....

Attendance is already better than it was under Lick, and is back on the rise after the showing that McCaffery put on with last year's squad. That increase will only accelerate if/when Woodbury commits. So that is no maybe.

All it takes for a kid to do this is a desire to be a part of something special. Guaranteed, Woodbury would be remembered in a much different light at Iowa if he helped bring Iowa back to the Dance, than he would be at UNC, where he would be just another star recruit in a LONG list. It takes national championships to really be remembered at places like that.

Maybe attendance is on the rise, but according to the Des Moines Register, Iowa had an average of 7,100 fans a game, and that is like 60% of what UNC and Kansas average. But all of this is really besides the point. What is more to the point is what you said in your last sentence. National championships. That is why guys go to UNC, to win titles. That is something Iowa cannot offer.

That is really the meat of what I am getting at. Top recruits want to achieve the ultimate goal.

And if this were an out of state prospect, I'd agree with you. But Woodbury is a pretty big Hawk fan, and has even attended I-Club events. He's certainly not in the bag, but Iowa has a pretty legit chance to land him.

It takes a unique kid to pass up the big-time offer to play for the lesser school.

I used to coach track -- three of my guys went D1. One picked football and went with the school that had the best pre-med program. The other two passed up offers from branch campuses of UNC and accepted less money from BCS schools. They both decided that they would rather be small fish at bigger track programs that be a big fish at a mid-major.

Point? The kids I've been around have -- I'd say 9 times out of 10 -- picked the glory program over the lesser program. I had a student who picked Clemson for baseball when he knew he wouldn't get much playing time, even though he had offers from equally good schools academically where he would have played more. Bottom line for him? He wanted the challenge of playing for a top-10 program, and he wanted to say he'd been part of a CWS team, albeit on the bench.

I hope Woody picks the Hawks, and if he does, it says a lot about the kid's character. Most kids in his position would pick the glory school.

Whether Woodbury picks Iowa or not,it says nothing about his character. That's nonsense.

Back on topic- Woodbury vaulted up to #44 in Scout's latest Top 100. Gesell is now at #93 in Scout's rankings.

Wow- you guys only averaged 7,100 fans last year? iowa basketball has a long way to go.

Our women's program attendance is better than 7,100. The ISU men's program averaged 12,500, thats 26th in the country and 3rd in the big 12 behind kansas and texas. I'm very comfortable with the quality of the ISU fan and plan on the numbers going up with Coach Hoiberg in charge.
