ESPN down grades all 5 Iowa recruits

just answer one question. if you saw the UTube video of Meyer, how many of you think he deserved to be down graded to a 2*? stars don't matter to the fans, but on a national level of respect for Fran and his program how do you think it affects this,

Anyone that says stars don't matter is lying to themselves. It is one of the 1st things anyone checks when learning of a recruit.

Is it the end all be all? No, but it matters.

personally i care less about a olayers ranking, but when a entire class of recruits get downgraded by a rating service is comprehension and speaks of a total bias against a school, and rather than jump on the unimportant part of the stars, people need to think outside the box and look at how this is viewed by future recruits, stars may not matter to fans but it is to the players, kids play all summer and compete against the best to be judged on their skills and performance.to just have the ranking they earned to be taken away because of who they commit to.again future recruits see this and those that are good enough to miss out in All Star games because of this may have this influence their decision.Woodbury just had any shot at the McDonald game just taken away as a 5* is more likely to get in rather than a 4* just on the edge of falling out of the Top 50.and if you think for one minute that getting a recruit that made the McDonalds game wouldn't make a bigger statement with his 3rd recruiting class, you are don't want to admit that because i started this thread or you are a complete idiot in how recruiting rankings work and affect other kids decisionspersonally i had thought a couple would increase the ranking making this class ranking wise better, what's truly is amazing how people were just gushing about the class when it just outside the Top 10, now that it has dropped now the attitude. oh well stars don't mean squat
Everyone is making fun of you because you think ESPN is out to get Iowa.

actually he is not saying that at all. what he is saying is recruiting services judge recruits on what schools they go to. if AW picks a school like Iowa, recruiting services think since he went to a crappy school he must not be that good cause Iowa can't get good recruits. if AW picks NC then recruiting services think he must be really good. If Roy wants him he must be one of the best recruits in the nation because NC only takes the best of the best. it makes perfect sense to me.

Give it a rest!

Use Rivals, Meyer is still a 3 star on Rivals.

to just have the ranking they earned to be taken away because of who they commit to.
again future recruits see this and those that are good enough to miss out in All Star games because of this may have this influence their decision.
Woodbury just had any shot at the McDonald game just taken away as a 5* is more likely to get in rather than a 4* just on the edge of falling out of the Top 50.

That paragraph is un-readable.

Google "Carl Gerbschmidt" and that is who detective herby reminds me of. Hawk fans in the Twin Cities area may know who Gerbschmidt is, especially if they listen to KFAN.

That might make sense if NC didn't offer... No it still wouldn't make sense at all.

recruiting services have to know that a coach recruiting a kid is going to know more about that kid then they are. they also know North Carolina would never recruit a 2* kid so if one ever signed with them they would know without a doubt that they under rated him and they would adjust his rating based on where he signed. if that same 2* kid chose Iowa they would not adjust his rating

When was Woodbury rated a 5* by ESPN? Last I saw he was 42 or so, and a 4*. Dropping 8 spots in the ESPN rankings will not cost you a spot in the McD AA game. A little more goes into it than that. And he probably wasn't highly likely to get in it anyway.

Methinks you're overreacting a little (re: WAY) too much. As was stated, look up all of their Rivals ratings. Despite ESPN doing a better job than they used to, everyone I've seen, other than ESPN writers, rely much more on Rivals and Scout.

Why doesn't Herby just use Rivals like 99% of the others around here.

Stars are only useful to people on sites like Hawkeyenation who don't get to watch these kids play enough games to evaluate their talent.

Kids know who is good and who isn't based on playing against them at camps and aau tournaments. Some kid who faced Woodburry could care less if Woodbury is ranked a 4 star or 5 star. If he was undecided he would know the players who are committed to Iowa since he would have played against them and see players at camps.

This is just a dumb thread.

This thread is the very example of why people shouldn't get so worked up over ratings.

What is going to sell more magazines, turn on more TV's, get more web hits? That Iowa has a top recruiting class in basketball or that Duke, UNC, Indiana, Kentucky, etc do? or Texas, tOSU, USC, LSU, Bama, etc in football?

I think we all know the answer to that question. It's very flawed there are far too many HS kids out there for any service to have an accurate ranking of players. There is a reason why Tom Lemming has Chicago area kids ranked so high vs. other national services.

Yes, it's great to get 4 and 5 * kids but holy hell do some take it to another level.

having a top 20 class would sound better to recruits then a top 30 class. if a recruit is 50 50 between us and someone else it could make the difference. I'm pretty sure that's all herby is trying to say then everyone rips on him and it becomes stupid. I have even seen Jon say on here that recruiting services can be bias towards schools. I'm surprised people are arguing this that much i thought it was common knowledge

Im sure the convo goes like this?

Recruit- Hey Coach Fran, I really like the campus and also heard you guys had a Top 20 class back in 2012.

Fran- Well actually it was Top 30, but was an impressive class regardless.

Recruit- Top 30? Im out, peace.

Your problem is that you're trying to understand what Herby is trying to say.
